The Chevrolet Corvette is now in its eighth generation and it seems every year the team comes out with another variation that is even more exciting. That’s a high bar when most of the Corvettes already can hit 200 mph. It is hard to imagine a vehicle more exciting than the Corvette ZR1 and the ZR1X. As I have previously reported, the ZR1s have set records at the best tracks in the world. The ZR1 does 0-60 in 2.3 seconds, which makes it the quickest Corvette ever. Chevrolet’s halo car has 1,064 horsepower and recently reached a top speed of 233 miles per hour during testing in Europe. The Corvette ZR1 equipped with the ZTK Performance Package can reach new records, running the quarter mile in 9.6 seconds. Based on these figures, no current production car under $1 million rivals the Corvette ZR1.

The ZR1X takes the LT7 twin-turbo V8 with 1,064 horsepower and adds a compact electric motor on the front axle with 186 horsepower, for a total of 1250 horsepower. The ZR1s and ZR1Xs are well over $200,000 and you will rarely see them because they will end up in private collections.

Grand Sport is Back for 2027

In 2027, Corvette is bringing back a model that will make most sports car enthusiasts happy. The 2027 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport and Grand Sport X combine the best of all Corvettes. It will be fast enough to make most sportscar lovers happy but will be more available. You’ll see the Grand Sports on the streets with smiling drivers behind the wheels. Both the Grand Sport and the Grand Sport X will carry GM’s next-generation small block V8, the LS6 6.7L V8. Eventually, the Corvette Stingray will have the same engine. That will give the Grand Sport and the Stingray enough power to top 200mph.

“Grand Sport has always been the Corvette for drivers who want the spirit of a race car in a package they can enjoy every day,” said Scott Bell, vice president of Global Chevrolet. “With the new Grand Sport and Grand Sport X, we’ve taken that formula into the mid-engine era, pairing a heritage-rich design with the most advanced Corvette technologies we’ve ever offered.”

“The Grand Sport model has historically acted as a high-volume player in the Corvette lineup. We expect the Stingray and Grand Sport lineup combined to account for the vast majority of Corvette sales.”

73 Years of Innovation

Engineers designed the Chevrolet Corvette to be America’s version of the little European sports cars. Harley Earl will forever be considered the inventor and mastermind behind the Corvette, while Zora Arkus-Duntov was considered the "Father of the Corvette." Chevrolet only sold 300 of the 1953 Corvettes. They had problems with the fiberglass bodies where the pieces were bolted together. The next year they were able to produce more vehicles and the new fiberglass model was better received.

Throughout the eight generations, Corvette has always been a two seater with only two doors. It is the only American sports car that has been continuously produced for 73 years. The Ford Mustang has been continuously produced but it didn’t debut until 1964.

The Chevrolet Corvette serves as Chevrolet's halo car, usually debuting the latest technology. All of the previous Corvette generations used a front engine configuration. Corvette switched to the mid-engine for the eighth generation, which is why they are called C8s.

Corvettes Built at the Same Plant for 45 Years

The Corvette has been produced in Bowling Green, Kentucky, since 1981. The National Corvette Museum was built at the same location. Buyers are allowed to take possession of their new car at the plant. There is also a program that allows some buyers to see some parts of their vehicles being assembled. They were holding special celebrations today at the museum honoring Corvette’s big birthday!

The Chevrolet Corvette has lead the way when it comes to sports cars over the years. It is often featured in songs and movies. One has to admire any product that has lasted that long. Corvette has not only lasted but excelled! Happy 73rd birthday, Chevrolet Corvette!
