When GM debuts news technology, it typically happens on Cadillac vehicles. That is where we have seen most of the company’s Super Cruise innovations. The 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ EV will be the first to have eyes-off driving, the most advanced Super Cruise technology, yet. I can’t say I like the name, and they aren’t calling it an autonomous vehicle. The new tech will incorporate much of the autonomous driving technology that was used on the Cruise robotaxis.

“GM has already mapped 600,000 miles of hands-free roads in North America, and customers have driven 700 million miles with Super Cruise without a single reported crash attributed to the system. Additionally, the technology and validation frameworks from Cruise add more than five million fully driverless miles of experience.

This combination of technology, scale, a decade of real-world deployment experience, and safety systems developed and tested for Super Cruise gives us the foundation to deliver the next phase of personal autonomy.”

2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ EV

GM announced a number of new technologies at an event called GM Forward. We will see most of the new tech on the 2028 Escalade IQ EV. One of the key advancements is the incorporation of conversational AI. Google Gemini will make it possible to talk to your car and the vehicle will be able to answer questions. We may see it as soon as next year on some GM vehicles.

According to engineers, “GM will introduce its own AI, custom-built for your vehicle. With your permission, it will be fine-tuned with your vehicle’s intelligence and your personal preferences, all connected by OnStar. This could include explaining one-pedal driving in your new vehicle, spotting a maintenance issue early, or finding the perfect place for dinner en route to your destination.”

The conversational AI will be able to continually update and in effect learn about the driver, tailoring answers to meet the driver’s expectations. If the vehicle knows you like a certain type of restaurant, it can find the ones closest to you.

New Software Platform

All of these innovations will coincide with the development of a new centralized software platform that will underpin all GM vehicles. Again, the new technology will roll out on the Cadillac Escalade IQ EV, which is designed to be one of Cadillac’s most advanced vehicles. The new software platform will power both EVs and gasoline vehicles, but it will cover all major vehicle systems. A single high-speed computing core will monitor everything from propulsion to steering, infotainment and safety.

According to GM, the newer technology will be infinitely faster than old software systems.

“The result: 10 times more over-the-air software update capacity, 1,000 times more bandwidth, and up to 35 times more AI performance for autonomy and advanced features. It’s a foundation built for continuous learning and improvement, enabling GM vehicles to evolve long after they leave the showroom.”

Cadillac Escalade IQ

The Cadillac Escalade IQ didn’t reinvent the wheel, it electrified Cadillac’s most popular vehicle.

“Escalade IQ raises the standard just as the original Escalade redefined luxury a quarter-century ago,” said John Roth, vice president, Global Cadillac. “This reimagining of an icon marks the next step in Cadillac’s all-electric future.”

The current Cadillac Escalade is the best-selling large luxury SUV. It carries the entire family with all of the necessary luggage and does it with style. The Cadillac Escalade IQ is also a large luxury SUV. It will have plenty of room for all of the necessary gear, especially with its roomy front eTrunk compartment under the hood with 12 cubic feet of storage.

The electric architecture allowed designers to give the IQ a sleeker profile, but Cadillac made sure the silhouette is instantly recognizable as an Escalade. The battery platform also enables a lower, flatter interior floor that contributes to the Escalade IQ’s spaciousness.

Upgrading the Home Charging Experience

As GM upgrades its software-defined vehicles, it says it is also upgrading the charging experience and its relationship with the electrical grid.

Most new GM electric vehicles can provide backup power from their batteries to properly equipped homes — and soon, they’ll be capable of providing power back to the electrical grid. GM offers a range of EV charging and backup home energy choices. Starting in 2026, GM says it will make the full GM Energy Home System (bi-directional EV charging plus a stationary home battery) available via leasing, with terms to be announced later. This will begin with GM EV owners and later roll out to other homeowners interested in backup power and solar integration. Both GM’s EVs and home energy systems are supported by a smartphone app that can be updated over time for new capabilities like vehicle-to-grid programs.
