Not gimmicks or gimmicky marketing. It’s the feel of the materials, the tactile buttons, the wood accents, and a driving experience that doesn’t try to be a video game.

How Engineering and Aesthetics Align

  • Lucid Motors fosters close collaboration between its design and engineering teams by housing them under one roof. This integrated setup ensures that aesthetic design and technical functionality evolve together, leading to a harmonious and efficient vehicle development process. 
  • Despite the prevalence of digital modeling, Lucid continues to utilize traditional clay modeling techniques. This hands-on approach allows designers to physically interact with the vehicle's form, facilitating a deeper understanding of proportions and surfaces, which is crucial for refining the vehicle's aesthetics and ergonomics. 
  • The Gravity's design prioritizes interior spaciousness without compromising on performance or aerodynamics. By leveraging compact electric powertrain components and a low-profile battery pack, Lucid maximizes cabin space, offering comfortable seating for up to seven adults and ample cargo capacity, all within a sleek and aerodynamic SUV profile.

 

Lucid’s approach with the Gravity is equal parts ambition and understatement. It’s not trying to out-weird Tesla. Instead, it focuses on making a solid, premium, liveable SUV. Reddit user FrontFly2562, already an owner of the Lucid Air, highlighted the Gravity’s composure and packaging with engineer-like precision:

A Reddit post from user FrontFly2562 titled "Impressions from Gravity test drive" shares experiences from a 15-minute test drive. Key points include comparison to Air regarding handling, rear-wheel steering for tight turns, slower acceleration compared to AT, adjustable "squircle" steering wheel, improved quality of life features like a spring-loaded console cover, dual app usage, and minor drawbacks like small lane-change camera video and front seat obstruction. If that’s not praise coming from someone already invested in the Lucid ecosystem, I don’t know what is.

And yet, even in the middle of this consumer enthusiasm, Twizzlezappa, a seasoned EV owner and pre-order holder, was unimpressed by a rushed, underwhelming test drive that involved untrained staff and frustrating software limitations.

“I have owned 4 electric cars, this will (would?) be my 5th. The test drive experience was a real disappointment… The car isn't ready for delivery based on my limited exposure to it this morning. Really bummed.”

But even that didn’t amount to a total rejection, just a hope that this early stumble was an outlier, not a systemic flaw. That, in itself, tells you the Gravity has something worth hoping for.

  • Equipped with dual electric motors, the Gravity delivers up to 828 horsepower and 909 lb-ft of torque, enabling acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.5 seconds. 
  • The SUV offers an EPA-estimated range of up to 450 miles on a full charge and supports DC fast charging, adding up to 200 miles of range in approximately 11 minutes.

You'd be surprised. When my brother first received his $100k Model S, I was very underwhelmed. Between the creaks and groans of the chassis and the lack of basic amenities (center console, sunglass holder, intermittent wipers), I felt like this car should have been way cheaper

I love everything I hear about The Gravity, but the software. I’m a current owner of a Tesla S and I’m always happy to see I have yet another software upgrade automatically downloaded over night. Just gets better and better. Now if Lucid could steal a software expert from Tesla, to improve their performance, I’m in. And don’t go shaming “dog mode”.. it’s genius. Also the fact that it will automatically turn on the air conditioner if the interior cabin reaches a certain temperature to prevent a tragedy like a forgotten child in the backseat. Come on Gravity. I’m so close.
