Tesla Has a Serious Safety Issue With the Cybertruck Frunk: Keep Your Fingers and Hands Away While It Is Closing

When closing the Cybertruck frunk, it's important to keep your fingers and hands away from the lid and anyone else near you, as a recent set of tests showed that Tesla doesn't have any safety mechanisms in place to prevent it from closing.

Stay Safe When Closing the Cybertruck Frunk

The Cybertruck may be a marvel of engineering with an epic sound system, however, there is one thing that is important to do around the Cybertruck - especially when closing the frunk.

You see, the Cybertruck frunk does not come with any kind of sensor that senses objects - or your hands and fingers if they are near the crevice where the frunk closes.

This is one area Rivian has a leg up on the Cybertruck, as their frunk will sense the object, finger, hand, or whatever it is and avoid closing on it.

In a video by Out of Spec reviews, Kyle tried testing out a variety of objects with a Rivian and Cybertruck frunk and found that the Rivian was far safer to close than the Cybertruck.

The Rivian simply glanced off the object and reopened, while the Cybertruck closed without recognizing the object in the way. Kyle tried a carrot and banana, and both had the same unfortunate result of the frunk closing on them.

This is an important warning for those who own a Cybertruck, to keep your hands and fingers away from the frunk - as well as those from your children or anybody else that may be near it.

Will Tesla Fix This Problem?

Will Tesla fix this problem? It all depends on if the Cybertruck frunk has any built-in sensors that can see any objects, or if there are cameras that can see any objects in the way of the frunk closing.

The other thing Tesla could do is sense if the frunk is closed or not and see if any extra force is being applied - or any premature force is being applied to the frunk lid before reaching the closed state. If it is, Tesla could abort the close and do what Rivian is doing and reopen the frunk.

I think this is a safety issue that Tesla should address immediately with a software update so that nobody has any unfortunate accidents. The Cybertruck doors may be bulletproof, but they should also have sensors on them.

Tesla could also use anti-pinch sensors on the hood for child safety. These sensors are generally attached to the hood and detect resistance when closing the hood. They prevent accidents by halting motion.

According to Garage Klub:

An anti-pinch sensor in automotive design utilizes infrared or ultrasonic technology to detect any resistance in the closing motion of a car door or hood. When an obstruction, like fingers, is sensed, the sensor triggers the system to halt the closing process, preventing potential injuries. This safety feature is crucial in minimizing the risk of accidents, especially involving children.

As far as I understand, the Cybertruck door, once opened with the electronic button, will open up about an inch, but not close all the way unless you open up the door more. At that point, you can close the door all the way and there are no sensors that I am aware of to prevent it from closing in the event of an obstruction.

Here's to hoping that Tesla fixes this safety issue sooner, rather than later.
