Subaru Recalls 35,000 New Crosstrek And Impreza For An Electrical Design Flaw

Subaru of America recalled the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek and the 2024 Subaru Impreza for an electrical issue that could cause a loss of power while driving. Check the report and see if your vehicle is affected.

The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek and 2024 Subaru Impreza are all-new models arriving now and are already recalled by Subaru and Subaru of America. Subaru recalls the new next-generation 2024 Subaru Crosstrek subcompact SUV and the all-new 2024 Impreza hatchback for an electrical issue that could cause a loss of power while driving.

Subaru and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) say the potential number of vehicles affected is 35,357. The number of potentially affected new 2024 Crosstrek vehicles is 29,561. The number of potentially affected 2024 Impreza vehicles is 5,796.

What is the problem with the new Crosstrek and Impreza?

Subaru and the NHTSA report that the affected vehicles have insufficient clearance around the instrument panel harness, which may allow the harness to contact the steering beam bracket. If the harness contacts the bracket, the wire insulation could be damaged, and a wire could short circuit.

Description of the Cause:

There was a flaw in Subaru's design that did not sufficiently check the clearance around the instrument panel harness. Subaru should have installed a protector in the new 2024 Crosstrek and Impreza during the manufacturing process preventing contact between the harness and bracket.

Description of the issue:

The NHTSA says if a short circuit occurs while the vehicle is in motion, the vehicle may experience a loss of motive power while driving without the ability to immediately restart the engine, increasing the risk of a crash.

Through August 4, 2023, Subaru says they are aware of one technical report and no warranty claims in the U.S. market related to the condition described in this report. Subaru of America is unaware of any crashes or injuries resulting from this condition.

Remedy

Subaru dealers will inspect the harness and install an additional clamp on the steering beam bracket. If damage is found, dealers will add protective tape or replace the instrument panel harness as necessary. The instrument panel harness repairs will be performed free of charge.

2024 Subaru Crosstrek and 2024 Impreza owners will receive notification letters expected to be mailed on October 3, 2023. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WRL-23.
