New Upgrades - See Which Next-Gen Subaru Models Are Made In The U.S. And Japan Now

Which Subaru models are made in America, and which are made in Japan? Subaru Corporation reshuffled its manufacturing this year, and things look different now. See how it affects U.S. customers.

Where does Subaru manufacture its new 2024 Crosstrek subcompact SUV? Subaru of America announced the 2024 Crosstrek is now made in its factory in Lafayette, Indiana. As a result, customers won't have to wait for two new trim levels to be shipped across the pond from Japan.

Subaru of America recently said the 2024 Crosstrek Sport and Limited would be produced in the U.S. for the first time at Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA). Crosstrek Sport and Limited trims will continue to be the hot models because they come with a re-tuned and slightly more powerful 2.5-liter Boxer engine upgrade.

In addition, the all-new 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness will also be made in the U.S. factory. The Wilderness could be the most significant new launch for Subaru of America this year.

But, the Base and Premium trims will still be made in Gunma, Japan, and will take longer to arrive on U.S. shores like the Canadian models.

The Crosstrek is Subaru of America's hottest model, and they expect it to get even hotter when the newly-remodeled subcompact SUV arrives this spring and summer. So they wanted to get the new model to their customers as quickly as possible, and they petitioned Subaru Corporation to make the hot small SUV in the U.S. factory.

What Subaru models are made in the U.S.?

Subaru Corporation listened and gave the factory the go-ahead to start building the new 2024 Crosstrek subcompact SUV in the U.S. factory along with the Outback midsize SUV, Ascent 3-Row SUV, and Legacy midsize sedan.

The Impreza is no longer manufactured in the U.S. factory in Lafayette, Indiana.

All 2024 model-year Impreza hatchbacks will now be made in the Gunma, Japan factory and shipped to the U.S. from Japan. Subaru switched to make room for the 2024 Crosstrek Sport, Limited, and Wilderness that Subaru of Indiana Automotive now makes in the U.S. factory.

Another reason Subaru moved the Impreza production to Japan is because they now only offer the Impreza in a hatchback body style. They dropped the Impreza sedan because Subaru of America sold nearly 80 percent of Impreza's in hatchback body style. So the sedan had to go, and Subaru's manufacturing is now more efficient.

Which Subaru models are now made in Japan?

The Subaru Forester compact SUV, 2024 Crosstrek Base and Premium subcompact SUV trims, 2024 Impreza compact hatchback, Subaru WRX performance sports car, and Subaru BRZ sports car are made in Gunma, Japan.

Subaru did not reveal how many new 2024 Crosstrek Sport and Limited trim will be built in the U.S., but it could be a significant number, with the Sport trim being one of the most popular trim levels. As a result, U.S. customers now have the advantage of getting its most popular model quicker.
