Almost every automaker sells a compact SUV, but few are as accomplished as the Subaru Forester compact SUV. The Forester has dominated the Consumer Reports Top Picks list since 1997. The Subaru Forester has made the list 15 times in the past twenty-five years. No other SUV in any class can match these stats. The Toyota RAV4 is next with ten appearances.

What does Consumer Reports say about the 2022 Subaru Forester?

CR says, “The Forester received a light freshening for the 2022 model year, updating its looks while adding a more adventurous Wilderness trim. The secret to Forester’s success has been its efficient, spacious design, strong fuel economy, focus on safety, great road-test performance; and strong reliability history.”

According to a new report from Consumer Reports, the 2022 Subaru Forester Small SUV is one of its Best Cars of the Year and a 10 Top Pick of 2022. CR says Forester meets their very highest standards in performance, road tests, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety.

The refreshed 2022 Forester is considered “best-of-the-best,” scoring highest in the Small SUV category again as the compact makes its ninth consecutive Top Picks appearance.

What is the Forester fuel mileage?

The 2022 Subaru Forester compact SUV comes with standard all-wheel drive and gets an EPA estimated 29 combined mpg and 26/33 city/highway mpg. The Forester comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine.

CR says, “It is hard to overstate the importance of design. The Forester’s upright shape provides greater access, cabin space, and cargo room than its competitors. The tall roof and large windows provide fishbowl-like outward visibility, giving a wide view of the road and surroundings. And responsive handling and a supple ride further enhance the driving experience. The latest EyeSight suite of safety features is standard.”

Our take

Compact SUV shoppers looking for affordability, standard all-wheel drive, all-weather all-terrain capability, fuel efficiency, reliability, and top safety scores should check out the refreshed 2022 Subaru Forester and the all-new Forester Wilderness trim level.

Should customers wait for the 2023 Subaru Forester?

There will be price increases on all 2023 Subaru Forester models because of the rise in supply and parts costs. Look for the 2023 Forester to get about a $600 price increase across all trim levels.

Wait for the 2024 Subaru Forester

If customers wait, the 2024 Subaru Forester compact SUV gets a complete remodel with the exterior, interior, and possible engine upgrades. Stay tuned.

The 2023 Subaru Forester and next-generation 2024 Subaru Forester will likely dominate the Consumer Reports Top Picks list and be a good pick for compact SUV shoppers.
