Sneak Preview - New Subaru SUV Debut At The LA Auto Show - You Already Know

Subaru will bring an all-new model to the L.A. Auto Show in November. Here is a sneak preview and what's coming for U.S. customers.

A recent Biz Journals report states that the L.A. Auto Show will host new vehicle debuts by Subaru, Hyundai, Fiat, and more. You already know because Torque News reported in August that the all-new U.S.-spec 2024 Subaru Crosstrek would be the latest model to be revealed in Los Angeles. Subaru Corporation gave the world its first glimpse of the next-generation Crosstrek that will launch in Japan and Australia. Now it's time for its North American debut.

Subaru of America will get a different version with different engines and drivetrains. Japanese customers get the new Crosstrek with a 2.0-liter engine and e-Boxer hybrid technology. North American customers will likely get the new Crosstrek with three engines, a 2.0-liter Boxer, a 2.5-liter engine, and a Plug-in Hybrid trim level.

Subaru will likely give the engines used in the current model minor improvements with a slight increase in fuel mileage over the outgoing model. Modifications will be made to the engine and Lineartronic automatic transmission to reduce vibration and noise. Subaru of America may decide to drop the 6-speed manual gearbox, but Subaru has yet to confirm this.

The U.S.-spec Crosstrek will receive the same upgrades as the Japan-spec model to the exterior, and interior, next-generation EyeSight with a wide-angle monocular camera, and the newly upgraded Global Platform with greater rigidity and improved driving dynamics.

The biggest surprise for the next-generation Crosstrek is that Subaru Corporation lowered the new model's ride height. The 2024 Crosstrek rides nearly an inch lower than the previous generation model. Subaru Corporation says the newly-remodeled Crosstrek comes with 200 mm of ground clearance which is now 7.9 inches compared with 8.7-inches in the last generation model.

Why did Subaru lower the Crosstrek?

The new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek will be more aerodynamic and likely get improved fuel mileage even though it's heavier than the outgoing model. But Subaru sacrificed extra ground clearance in the new Crosstrek to reach the goal.

It's good that the new Crosstrek's ride comfort, body rigidity, braking, steering, and noise reduction are all improved. Subaru's goal is to increase the new model's appeal by making the next generation more of a driver's vehicle.

The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness

The most significant change for the U.S.-spec Crosstrek is that customers will get an all-new 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness trim level. The Crosstrek Wilderness will be the third SUV with the rugged Wilderness branding joining the Outback and Forester. The Crosstrek Wilderness will likely have added ground clearance over the standard model for outdoor enthusiasts. Crosstrek Wilderness will probably have 9.2-inches of ground clearance like the Forester Wilderness.

Will the Crosstrek Wilderness get the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine?

Like Forester Wilderness, the Crosstrek Wilderness will not get a new 2.4-liter turbocharged engine upgrade. The 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated Boxer engine will power it.

When will the 2024 Crosstrek arrive in the U.S.?

Subaru Corporation says they will launch the all-new 2024 Crosstrek in Japan in 2023 (or later) and then introduce the third-generation subcompact SUV in the U.S. and other global markets. Customers in the U.S. may have to wait until 2024 to get their hands on the next-generation Crosstrek subcompact SUV.

The Crosstrek Wilderness will be the new model for more active customers who want to get further off the grid. But U.S. customers will have to wait to get one. The rugged Crosstrek Wilderness will arrive later.

Look for the third-generation 2024 Subaru Crosstrek to make its U.S. reveal at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Thursday, November 17, at the Subaru of America press conference. Stay tuned.
