The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness is expected to arrive in U.S. showrooms next year. The new Wilderness trim level is highly anticipated, but it has been delayed again. Here are renderings from our friend Mike Nichoson who designed the new all-electric 2027 Crosstrek Wilderness below. Here is what we wish it looked like if it reaches U.S. customers.
What we know about the Crosstrek Wilderness
Outdoor enthusiasts will have to wait until next year to get the more rugged 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness trim level. The outdoor trim will likely be announced in late 2022 or early 2023.
The Crosstrek Wilderness EV rendering "is heavily based on the 2019 VIZIV Adrenaline and 2016 XV concepts," says Mike Nichoson.
Why is Subaru waiting so long to bring out the new gas-powered Crosstrek Wilderness? Subaru wants to bring the all-new Wilderness trim level when the third-generation models get a complete remodel for the 2024 model year to create even more excitement for the subcompact SUV and the brand.
Why did Subaru decide to wait another year to give Crosstrek a complete remodel?
The Crosstrek is Subaru of America's hottest-selling model. In a year where there are plant shutdowns, supply chain issues, and microchip shortages, Subaru has chosen to wait on the third-generation model.
Crosstrek Wilderness specs
Like Outback and Forester Wilderness trim levels, the all-new Crosstrek Wilderness will come with an advanced dual function X-Mode, elevated 9.2-inch ground clearance like Forester, standard front and rear skid plates, and an upgraded off-road suspension.
The Crosstrek Wilderness will wear 17-inch Yokohama Geolandar all-terrain tires and come with a full-size spare tire. The new Crosstrek will also feature a modified Lineartronic CVT automatic (Continuously Variable Transmission) and an upgraded rear differential.
Will Wilderness get a new 2.4-liter turbo engine?
Subaru could decide to upgrade the Crosstrek's current 2.5-liter naturally aspirated Boxer engine with additional horsepower. But true to form, the Japanese automaker is tight-lipped about releasing any information on the outdoor adventure model.
The off-road-ready Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness is expected to make its U.S. reveal in the spring of 2024 when the Japanese automaker gives the subcompact a complete remodel. Will Subaru Corporation build a Crosstrek Wilderness EV? If they do, it won't arrive until 2027. Stay tuned.
