New Honda Civic Type R Gets Another Price Bump But You Aren’t Whining

The new 2020 Honda Civic Type R gets another price increase. See why it isn’t bothering customers.

Honda has not given an official announcement, but the 2019 Honda Civic Type R is getting another price increase as a new report from CarsDirect was first to report it. The Civic Type R performance hatch is getting a price bump of $600 to bring the new MSRP to $37,230. Honda has also updated its Type R configurator and reflects the new $36,300 price bump without destination charges (+$930). Even at $37,230, the Type R will still be less than the 2019 Subaru WRX STI that has an MSRP of $37,480.

But even with the new price increase from Honda, it likely won’t affect sales of the popular hot hatch. A report from Motor Trend says dealer markups for the Civic Type R are hovering around $4,000 over MSRP. Even though dealers are using bait-and-switch tactics, it hasn’t stopped performance fans from buying the hot hatch.

It’s a simple example of supply/demand and there are enough buyers for the Civic Type R and dealers can gouge customers and they are still buying them. The Type R is a desirable performance car and it’s still one of the best performance car values for enthusiasts. Even the Civic sedan is the top dog when it comes to offering good value.

The Civic Type R’s main competition is the Volkswagen Golf R ($40,395), MINI Hardtop 2-Door John Cooper Works ($39,800 comparably equipped), and the Subaru WRX STI ($37,480). The Civic Type R is competitive with the competition and buyers are not whining even with the huge dealer markups putting the price at around $41,000.
