Forget everything you’ve heard about the 2026 Honda Prelude. Here’s what a long-time Honda performance vehicle owner and tester found in real-world driving.

It’s 2026, and I’m getting 51.3 MPG in a sports coupe that is a blast to drive. Only Honda offers an electrified sports coupe under $44K in America, and the Prelude rocks in real-world rural back-roads driving, on the highway, and in city traffic.

Let’s Get One Thing Straight - The Prelude Is FUN!
Our media fleet delivery driver dropped the Prelude off clean as a whistle, so we took some images and then drove it straight to our rural New England test loop. We hustled the Prelude up and down mountain passes and curvy switchbacks. There was no time during our trip when we could have put more power to use or driven the Prelude faster without risking arrest and having the car towed. It has more than enough get-up-and-go to fully exploit any real-world curvy dream road. That’s the goal of an affordable sports coupe - real-world usability.

The Prelude uses electric motors to torque you away from a stop when it’s floored, quickly followed by its engine coming alive and sounding like a sweet four-stroke Honda motorcycle engine. You have the choice of simulated shifts (I was surprised I liked it) or you can go smoothly along like you are in an EV. The perfect pair of options, if you ask me.

From a stop, the Prelude feels about as quick as a GR86 Auto or BRZ auto. Because it is. Car and Driver laid down a 6.5-second time in a Prelude. All the tests of the automatic Toyobaru twins put them within a fraction of a second of that time. These cars are all about equally quick. The Brembo brakes of the Prelude provide excellent feel and modulation. You can dive deeply into corners and then reel the Prelude in Miata-style. It stops like a true sports car with no hybrid regen feel whatsoever when you are having fun with it.

Curves and corners are where the Prelude is brilliant. It’s as good or better than any vehicle in its price class. Sharp turn in, zero torque steer exiting corners, and the line you want is the line you get when rounding hairpin turns.

Settings Galore
The Prelude has four basic settings, and you can mix and match them and then have an Individual setting. My area has potholes and a lot of road imperfections because paving doesn't buy votes. So I chose Comfort as the suspension setting and Sport for everything else. I swear I could feel a difference between just opting for Sport. The suspension seems more compliant, but without any real sacrifices.

2026 Honda Prelude S+ Drive Mode

S+ Shift is a program you can tap to make the Prelude feel like an 8-speed automatic. I played with it, and I liked it more than I thought I would. I enjoy EVs and hybrids, and don't need to pretend my car has gears to enjoy it, but when I was pushing the Prelude around on the back roads, it seemed more natural. Testing shows that the Prelude may be slightly quicker with it off, but who cares? The car feels sporty and fun in S+, and I didn't notice any difference in zip.

Drop the Glass In Your Prelude
Some 2-window coupes can be a bit boomy and do that “wubba-wubba-wubba” thing with the glass down, so we tested that right away. We’re pleased to report that the Prelude doesn’t have that bad habit. You do get a face full of wind now and then, but that’s the point. The large and long side windows give you the sensation of having no B-pillar. The Prelude feels nicely open and airy with the glass down.

Prelude Is Right-Sized For Two Grown-Up Americans
I love me a Miata and owned an NC for many years, but I barely fit in the ND. The Prelude has a big seat, the windshield is not in your field of view, and my six-foot, 200-pound body was comfy in all areas, including my knees. If you are a super-sized individual, check before you set your heart on the Prelude, but I think it will fit virtually all shoppers.

Like all four-seat “2+2” coupes, the Prelude’s back seats are for your gym bag or your kids on short drives. If you find any publication talking about how adults fit back there, stop reading it because they know nothing about sports cars.

Prelude Cargo Capacity
Officially, the Prelude has 15.1 cubic feet of cargo capacity. While that seems like a small number, the hatchback design allows you to drop the rear seats to open up a very large space. A set of four track tires can fit inside the Prelude, as our image and testing prove. Think of the Prelude as a 2+2 coupe, and it is quite roomy in that context.

2026 Prelude - What’s It Cost?
The Prelude has a price of $43,195, including Destination and Handling. You can add special paint to that price. Ours had a $455 Boost Blue paint adder. Funny paint name for a non-turbo car, but so be it. There is no Nissan Z or V8 Mustang at this price point. The GR86 and BRZ are a bit lower-priced, but much higher in ownership cost because of their much higher fuel costs.

2026 Prelude - Regular Gas and 44 MPG
In our testing, which included a LOT of Sport and S+ Shift modes, we didn't see the fuel economy that the EPA estimated. Instead, we saw better at 51 MPG. The EPA says that the Prelude will average about 44 MPG in all four seasons. The best news is that it uses Regular gas. The BRZ and GR86 need Premium and only get 25 MPG. Over ten years, the Toyobaru twins will cost you $14,000 more in fuel than the Prelude will.

There Is No Other Car In America That Does What the Prelude Can
The Prelude quickly wins you over as a car that is quick and fun in the real world. It’s not a punchy V8 coupe or twin-turbo six. You can’t buy one for this price point in America. You’d need about $10K more, plus patience, to order a special-build stripped-down Mustang V8. The Nissan Z Coupe closest to this Prelude has a starting price $3,300 higher. Both will also cost you $18K more in fuel over the first ten years of ownership. And you can bet your bottom dollar each has a lot higher insurance cost. In snow, the Prelude’s front-drive system will be superior to either the Z or Mustang on the way to work.

Among the more affordable coupes in America, the Prelude is equally quick and as good-looking as the GR86 and BRZ, and dramatically more comfortable, refined, and quieter than either. As a daily driver, the Prelude beats both handily. It also has a much better infotainment system.

The Prelude is not a “2026 Honda Civic Hybrid Coupe.”  It’s much more refined, precise, and polished than any Civic is. Honda could certainly produce a great Civic coupe if it so chose, but we would not expect it to have the same personality the Prelude does. Another car that the 2026 Prelude isn’t is any type of Integra. I just tested the best Integra made last week. I LOVED it, but it costs $12K more and wasn’t more fun than this Prelude is. The Integra and Civic sedans and hatchbacks don't have the same vibe this compact sports coupe does. Trust me, I’ve owned a Civic Si, and we’ve had an Integra in our family fleet. All great cars I would recommend to anyone, but the 2026 Prelude is unique, not derivative.

How Are Shoppers Reacting to the New Prelude
Honda is not intending the Prelude to be a mainstream seller. It has the Civic and Integra for volume sales. However, despite the Prelude being launched just five months ago, it has already caught up to the Subaru BRZ and Nissan Z sports coupes in deliveries. All three of these great coupes are averaging about 300 units per month, according to the latest data.

Looks - Prelude Wins In Every Matchup
As much as I think the GR86, BRZ, Z, and Mustang are great-looking vehicles, overall, the Prelude is the most handsome in the segment. From the side and front quarter view, it is hands-down the best. It isn't bad from the back, though the Mustang and GR86 may have the edge in that one view. Inside, there is no contest. The Prelude’s interior is a step up from any Honda I’ve tested. The dash has unique soft-touch materials, and the seats look amazing. I also quite liked the wheels and the Brembo calipers with the cursive Prelude name painted on. Some reviewers have said the Prelude “looks like…” one car or another, but I don’t see it that way. It’s a great design, and the looks are a big plus. We had folks passing by making positive comments about its looks from the very first drive.

The Prelude Earns Its Name Back
After a week with the 2026 Prelude, I came away convinced Honda has done something genuinely special and increasingly rare. They've built a sports coupe that's quick enough to thrill on a back road, refined enough to commute in without complaint, efficient enough to make the gas pump an afterthought, and priced thousands less than anything else doing even half of what it does. The Prelude isn't trying to be a track weapon, a muscle car, or a retro throwback. It's a real-world driver's car for people who actually drive in the real world over potholed New England pavement, through morning traffic, up a curvy mountain pass on a Saturday morning, and back home while averaging 51 MPG on regular gas. Honda revived a legendary nameplate, and rather than coasting on nostalgia, they earned it. If you're shopping for anything in this segment, drive a Prelude first before you decide. You'll understand why it's already selling as well as legendary coupes that have been on the market for years.
