Elon Musk: "We’ll Try a Little Advertising And See How It Goes"

Tesla just made a major departure from its 20-year-long word-of-mouth approach to marketing and will start advertising its cars to see how it goes. Well, how do you think it should go?

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced at the company's annual shareholder meeting on May 16, 2023 that Tesla would begin running car ads for the first time. This is a significant change for Tesla, which has historically relied on word-of-mouth and social media to generate interest in its products.

Here is what Musk said about Tesla advertising its cars. “We’ll try a little advertising and see how it goes,” Musk said Tuesday at Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting in response to an investor’s question. He also said, "It’s worth a try and we’ll see how effective it is. I only just agreed to it so it’s not a fully formed strategy."

Tesla will probably start running ads on social media, search engines, websites and television. The company also would probably be open to working with traditional advertising agencies. Otherwise, how would you do it?

It is not yet clear how much Tesla will spend on advertising, or when the ads will start running. However, the announcement is a sign that Tesla is confident in its ability to compete with traditional automakers in the increasingly competitive electric vehicle market. There was a growing movement among investors for Tesla to start advertising. It looks like Tesla finally gave in.

Here are some of the reasons of what running Tesla ads would do to the company:

  1. To increase brand awareness: Tesla is still a relatively small company, and running ads can help to raise awareness of its products.
  2. To reach a wider audience: Tesla's current marketing efforts are largely focused on online and social media, which limits its reach to a certain segment of the population. Running ads on television and other traditional media can help Tesla reach a wider audience.
  3. To compete with traditional automakers: Tesla is facing increasing competition from traditional automakers, who are now investing heavily in electric vehicles. Running ads can help Tesla to compete with these automakers and maintain its market share.

It remains to be seen how effective Tesla's advertising campaign will be. However, the announcement is a sign that the company is serious about growing its business and expanding its reach.
