Tesla Retail Investors Pitching Money to Advertise for Tesla: Why Are They Doing This?

There is a growing movement to get Tesla to advertise among retail and institutional investors. Here's the latest.

There was a poll recently made by Emmett Peppers, one of a large and growing number of retail investors who are concerned that Tesla needs to advertise to clear up misconceptions about the company, inform the public about EVs, and to show that Tesla vehicles are superior to any other vehicles on the road. Here is his latest poll:

It's interesting to see that after nearly 3,000 votes, numerous people, 43.3%, would never pitch in money to advertise. 35% would pitch in between $1 and $100 or more to help advertise for Tesla. 21.6% aren't sure or don't care.

In addition to that, Emmet informed me that there are those interested in donating up to $1,000 or more, so it is possible there are many outliers to this data.

This kind of advertising would be unaffiliated with Tesla. I think this is an interesting idea, because a pool of money from retail investors can be put to work in Google, Facebook, or other online modes of advertising that currently aren't getting utilized. The retail investors, who have a stake in Tesla, can show that it is working or not working based on clicks and interactions with the advertisements.

It would take someone to "lead" this effort and show exactly where the dollars are being spent though to make sure the money being pooled wasn't being taken and not used on the advertising efforts.

Why Should Tesla Advertise?

The three primary reasons for Tesla to get advertising done beyond its Twitter account and Elon Musk are for the following:

* To bring awareness and ease concerns about batteries, range, and charging
* To show how a Tesla is superior in all ways to other EVs and gas cars for the cost
* To clear up misconceptions about things like vehicle fires and safety

I think crowdsourcing this is a great idea, because it allows the concept to be proved or not. If retail investors show that it is working through clicks and interactions, then Elon Musk and Tesla might take it more seriously.

Right now, Tesla is not advertising as it is focusing on cutting costs, which will reduce the prices of its vehicles and make them more affordable. Elon Musk has even said he will bring margins close to 0% if he has to in order to maintain 50% growth each year.

One Twitter user suggested coming up with a contest and a prize for the top 3 winners of a prototype of a commercial that informs the public about a Tesla EV. I think there would be enough people willing to donate money toward advertising to see how it goes.
