Despite My Heart Being 10 Years With Porsche, I Don't See The Justification of the Price Premium of Taycan vs Lucid Air or The Model S.

Porsche Taycan Turbo S vs. Lucid Air GT: is the $50K price premium justified, or do rivals like Tesla and Lucid deliver better value and performance for luxury EV enthusiasts?

The luxury electric vehicle market has become a battleground where heritage, innovation, and practicality collide. Porsche’s Taycan Turbo S, a marvel of engineering and design, has established itself as a standout contender. However, when a loyal Porsche owner on the 'Porsche Enthusiast Site' forum questioned whether the Taycan Turbo S justifies its $50,000 price premium over the Lucid Air GT, it ignited a passionate debate.

This discussion sheds light on the challenges facing legacy automakers like Porsche in defending their price tags against innovative competitors such as Lucid and Tesla.

A Porsche Loyalist’s Dilemma

The forum thread began with a post by “Skullbussa,” a long-time Porsche enthusiast who described his decade-long affinity for the brand. His current lineup includes a 991.2 GT3: a weekend car that embodies everything Porsche enthusiasts love about the brand: precision, power, and a deeply engaging driving experience.

However, his unexpected venture into the EV world began with a lease on a Tesla Model 3 Performance, a decision driven by practicality. To his surprise, the Tesla proved enjoyable, inspiring him to explore EV options for his next car.

Skullbussa detailed his experience testing the Lucid Air GT, a lightly used Taycan Turbo S, and the Tesla Model S Plaid. While he praised the Taycan’s styling, fit, and finish as unrivaled, he found the Lucid Air GT offered comparable driving dynamics and engagement at a significantly lower cost.

“$50k+ more for that Turbo S than the Air GT, a car that, in my hands, feels just as good if not better in terms of chassis dynamics and fun behind the wheel? What am I missing here?”

Despite his loyalty to Porsche, he questioned whether the Turbo S could justify its premium, especially when competitors like Lucid and Tesla also delivered compelling experiences.

Community Perspectives: Emotion vs. Practicality

The post resonated deeply with other Porsche enthusiasts, sparking a lively discussion. Responses highlighted the diverse priorities and expectations of luxury EV buyers, ranging from brand loyalty and driving pleasure to practicality and innovation.

Porsche’s Emotional Appeal

For some, the Taycan represents the perfect blend of Porsche’s heritage and the cutting-edge potential of EV technology. Forum user “myphillylawyer” encapsulated this sentiment:

“I’ve been driving Porsches for 30 years. The Taycan Turbo S feels like any other Porsche I’ve owned. It puts a smile on my face entering and exiting turns like nothing else can do. If I wanted a car to drive me, I might go with a Tesla. But if I want to drive myself and make the journey the highlight of my day, there is no substitute for Porsche.”

This perspective underscores a fundamental truth about Porsche ownership: it’s as much about emotion and engagement as it is about performance and specs.

Practical Advantages of Tesla and Lucid

Others were less swayed by Porsche’s legacy, instead emphasizing the practicality and technological advantages of Tesla and Lucid.

“Leftlane,” another forum member, shared his experience of adding a Tesla Model S Plaid to his garage, alongside his 996 Turbo and Cayenne GTS. While he appreciated the Taycan’s design and build quality, he ultimately found the Tesla more practical and user-friendly as a daily driver.

“The Model S Plaid might be the easiest car I’ve ever owned. Zero problems, an easy charging network, ridiculous acceleration. The depreciation on all EVs is crazy, but the total package pointed me to the Plaid.”

Similarly, “CarAholic” expressed frustration with Porsche’s pricing strategy, stating that the current costs make it difficult to justify buying new vehicles from the brand.

Value vs. Legacy: A Complex Decision

The discussion reveals a central tension in the luxury EV market: the balance between the emotional appeal of established brands like Porsche and the practical advantages offered by new entrants like Lucid and Tesla.

Porsche Taycan Turbo S: The Legacy Contender

Porsche’s Taycan Turbo S is an engineering marvel. Its sleek, futuristic design, impeccable build quality, and engaging driving dynamics set it apart from most competitors. It carries the DNA of Porsche’s storied legacy, offering a driving experience that enthusiasts describe as uniquely Porsche.

Lucid Air GT: A Rising Star

Lucid’s Air GT represents a bold challenge to established luxury automakers. With a focus on innovation, cutting-edge technology, and an impressive 516-mile range, the Air GT has quickly gained traction in the high-end EV market.

While some question Lucid’s long-term viability as a company, the Air GT’s driving dynamics, luxurious interior, and competitive pricing make it a compelling alternative to the Taycan.

Tesla Model S Plaid: The Practical Powerhouse

Tesla, as the trailblazer of the modern EV market, continues to dominate with its Model S. The Plaid variant, in particular, boasts blistering acceleration, a robust charging network, and advanced driver-assistance features.

Although Tesla’s minimalist interiors and inconsistent build quality are common criticisms, the Model S Plaid remains a practical choice for buyers seeking performance and convenience at a relatively accessible price.

The Broader EV Debate

The Taycan Turbo S, Lucid Air GT, and Tesla Model S Plaid highlight the diversity of options available to today’s luxury EV buyers. Each model caters to a different set of priorities:

  • Porsche Taycan Turbo S: For those who prioritize heritage, craftsmanship, and the thrill of driving.
  • Lucid Air GT: For buyers seeking innovation, range, and a touch of exclusivity.
  • Tesla Model S Plaid: For drivers who value cutting-edge technology, practicality, and outright performance.

The performance statistics of these three EV legends are covered in a previous ‘Torque News’ article  Lucid Air takes on Tesla Plaid and Porsche Taycan Turbo S in Drag race and makes for interesting reading for enthusiasts of each brand.

As more EVs enter the market, buyers are increasingly forced to weigh emotion against logic, brand loyalty against practicality, and legacy against innovation.

What Does the Future Hold?

The discussion underscores a larger trend in the EV market: the democratization of luxury. Legacy brands like Porsche must now compete not only on heritage and craftsmanship but also on value and technology. Meanwhile, newer players like Lucid and Tesla are redefining what buyers expect from high-end EVs.

For Porsche enthusiasts, the Taycan remains a beacon of the brand’s commitment to excellence. However, as Skullbussa and others have highlighted, the Turbo S’s price premium may push even loyalists to consider alternatives.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to individual preferences. Whether buyers prioritize Porsche’s unparalleled driving experience, Lucid’s innovative edge, or Tesla’s practicality, one thing is clear: the luxury EV market is richer, more diverse, and more competitive than ever.

I have a Taycan but I purchased the RWD version which at the time has a list price of about $85K.

The Taycan is my dream car but I’d only consider a gently used one that has taken a big depreciation hit. I’ve owned a Tesla, love the supercharger network. Currently own two Rivians. I did sit in a Lucid recently, it’s very nice, tempting.

If you like driving a car on the track that's meant to be punished, have great brakes, tight cornering and great downloaded. The Porsche is the one. I've driven all 3, and the Porsche is my favorite for build quality and driving experience.

Will any of the 3 be repaired promptly? In the end a car is transportation. Bells and whistles don't mean anything if it's a 4500 Lb. paper weight!

Does this story only “work” if you use the Taycan Turbo S as the Porsche representative? Why not a Taycan model that starts at $91K.
Always good when people are discussing automotive things but we shouldn’t have to wear blinders or be ignorant of what is actually available in the market.
