The Subaru STI returns as a five-door hatchback for the first time in over a decade, but the numbers are a bit underwhelming.

Aside from the BRZ, Subaru hasn’t really made a true enthusiast car in a while. The last STI was discontinued in 2022, and ever since, we have been getting mildly spicy versions of the Impreza and other models that aren’t quite the full-on performance cars enthusiasts want. This includes three STI-inspired models that Subaru unveiled at the 2026 Tokyo Auto Show

There have been reports of a new STI coming in 2027, and we already know it will be inspired by the STI-B concept. The latest issue of the Japanese outlet, BestCarWeb, provides insight on a variety of upcoming Japanese models, and the 2027 Subaru STI is among them. We also know some of the numbers, and depending on who you might ask, they may be a bit disappointing.

The STI-B Concept suggests that the most notable improvements will be related to the chassis.

The Japanese way of making performance cars has rarely been about throwing more power at the next generation. While we have come to expect each new model to be more powerful than the last one, modern-day emissions regulations are making it difficult.

This will be the first STI to be powered by the FA24, turbocharged boxer-four engine. The unit is carried over from the lesser WRX model, but will reportedly make 300 metric horsepower and 295 pound-feet. To put things in perspective, the current Subaru WRX comes with 271 horsepower and 258 pound-feet from virtually the same engine. The extra power is likely due to a larger intercooler, a new turbocharger, and different mapping. The WRX is capable of sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 to 5.9 seconds, so we expect the STI to be marginally quicker.

In true tradition, the rally-bred Subaru hot hatchback will feature the company’s permanent, Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system and a six-speed manual. The classic STI formula returns.

The STI-B concept hinted at what we can expect on the 2027 Subaru STI. The new model will feature an aggressive wide-body kit with a large rear wing, lots of vents, and a functional rear diffuser. The concept model also showcased six-pot Brembo brakes at the front and forged BBS wheels, wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza tires.

It won’t be quite the lightweight hot hatch you hope for.

The 2027 STI will gain some weight. According to the Japanese scoop, the Subaru hot hatch will tip the scales at around 1,600 kg, which comes up to 3,527 pounds. To put things in perspective, the 2026 Subaru WRX weighs 3,351 to 3,560 pounds, depending on the trim. With all the new safety regulations, I suppose we have to be glad it isn’t much heavier than the previous models. In all honesty, I think this is a bit of an achievement.

The 2027 Subaru STI dimensions:

  • Length: 4,500 mm / 177.16 inches
  • Width: 1,850 mm / 72.83 inches
  • Height: 1,450 mm / 57.08 inches
  • Wheelbase: 2,675 mm / 105.31 inches

In Japan, the 2027 Subaru STI prices are expected to be in the 4.0 to 5.0 million Yen.

There are still details we don’t know about the 2027, such as how much stiffer the chassis will be, details about the suspension, price in other markets, and more. The WRX GT and tS (tuned by STI) trims have electrically-controlled adaptive dampers, so we expect a version of that system in the STI.

The 2027 STI will square up against other hot hatchbacks like the GR Corolla, Golf R, Civic Type-R, and Integra Type-R. It’s a tough company to beat. What are your thoughts on the 2027 STI? Would you choose it over the aforementioned competitors? Let’s discuss in the comments below.

It appears Subaru may have plateaued with it's boxer performance capabilities for a mass market vehicle being how none of it's STI vehicle surpassed 350hp while this one will stay around 300hp. I guess they can't factory warranty a Subaru boxer beyond that number.

And yet, the rally car they use has put out up to 850hp out of the same FA block/displacement configuration.

Underrating a motors power output is something many manufacturers have done for over a half century now.

Subaru has also been known to do this now and then, especially in the 1990s, so here's hoping that's the case here too. Although, this will likely be a global model, meaning it will have to cover the strict Euro regulations regarding C02 emissions... :(

Has this actually been confirmed for sale in the US market? Even if yes, will it go for less than 50 (or even 60) thousand dollars here? Just look at how the price of the standard WRX has gone up over the years. There are quite a few other performance car options at that price point nowadays in the US. The WRX/STI variants no longer offer the value they once did. Don't mistake me for a hater - I have owned 2 previous WRXs and would love to see the mighty STI return to our shores, but I am not sure it will capture as much interest or sales when it costs the same as a VW Golf Type R or even the Audi RS3, among others.

Well, if it isn't priced around the Hyundai Elantra N or Toyota GR Corolla, I can't see it as being very competitive, not with those numbers.

50k or 60k is already in the same price range as stuff like the GR Supra or BMW M240i, so it will be a tough market. If it's not priced around the same as a GR Corolla, I don't see how it can compete.

I could do without the boy-toy spoiler in the back or the option for a smaller one. I always liked hatchbacks and had a VW R32 which was one of my favorite cars. It was more reserved, but had the performance. I think alot of older people would consider this car without the big spoiler.

You make a good point.
Subaru can definitely take a page out of Porsche's book.
I am glad they made the 911 GT3 Touring, for those wanting the high-revving flat-six without the big spoilers.
Completely different price range, I know, but Subaru can take note.

Honestly, they still haven't made a decent looking one, especially now with that massive wing on the back. I just looks like they copied Toyotas homework on the carolla. I'll be sticking with my 2011 STi hatch I bought in 2012.

Michael Devlin (not verified)    May 6, 2026 - 10:42AM EDT

300hp in stock form is pretty disappointing, but the power potential of a unopened FA24dit is impressive.
Not to mention if the 6-speed is just a carry over from the previous gen STi, we know that transmission can handle some serious power in stock form as well. I had a GR Corolla, and while it was a fun car, it was pretty maxed out as it relates to power that the unopened engine could handle (anything above FBO, it required valve springs upgraded) and the drivetrain was maxed out at around 350ft lbs TQ. Plenty of examples of a stock unopened FA24dit doing 500whp in the new WRX, with the limiting factor being the WRX 6-speed transmission. Fortunately a previous gen STi transmission can be swapped in relatively easily into the new WRX. The WRX with its black claddding is just ugly as sin unfortunately. IF, and thats a big IF, the new STi does come out and looks nearly identical to the concept -B car, it will be a sales success.

I'll wait for the new Toyota Celica GR Sport. They're building what customers want. Subie has been letting down even its most loyal customers for too long.

Heavier than the extant WRX because it will ostensibly have the beefier, more capable STi transmission, center diff and rear diff.

The G20E in the GR Corolla will have more on road performance, but unless Toyota beefs up the AWD system, it will not be as rally capable, and will overheat as it does in the extant GR.

Given the larger intercooler, a tune alone likely to safely push it towards 330+ HP.
