Tesla FSD Version 12.3 - Very Safe Around Pedestrian

With all the miles that Tesla's FSD version 12.3 is going to drive, it's going to come across some odd scenarios. The car needs to be able to handle all of them. Elon Musk has even said that even if an alien UFO drops in the middle of the road, the car needs to be able to handle that.

In this case, while driving in his Tesla, Farzad Mesbahi was driving downtown in Austin, Texas, and in the middle of the road, with no crosswalk, a pedestrian was wandering through lanes of traffic on the road.

The Tesla vehicles successfully navigated around this pedestrian by changing lanes to the left. Fortunately, Tesla's FSD software knows when people are around and will always do its best to avoid them.

Tesla safety is one of the most often overlooked features about the company, and seeing it maneuver to the left of the pedestrian gives more confidence about the safety of this life changing software.

Handling Odd Cases

There's going to be quite a lot of odd cases for Tesla's FSD to handle and as more and more cars get and run the software, these cases are going to be shown and on video, just like Farzad's interaction with the pedestrian was shown.

So far, the worst scenario I've seen was FSD not quite turning correctly around a curb, hitting the tire on the curb, causing some damage to the tire.

I am not aware of any accidents that FSD has gotten into so far with cars or people, and this is a testament to Tesla's concern about safety.

Tesla will need to make sure this software handles all sorts of edge cases and wild scenarios. It will need to respond to gestures from police and firefighters and handle construction of all kinds.

In the end, the software should be able to drive better than any human on earth. When it goes for a wide release, I have a feeling we will see many more odd scenarios, like the situation with the pedestrian in the video below.

Take a look at the 19 minute and 12 second mark. It handled it very well. One could argue that the car had to get over to the left anyway, however, I think the Tesla would still have slowed down and moved over even if the path forward was straight and not left.
