More and More Companies Are Adopting the Tesla Charging Standard

With the word that GM is now going to adopt the Tesla charging standard, Tesla is showing they are the leader in EVs.

GM to Adopt Tesla Charging Standard

For EVs, this is a pivotal time, as charging is one of the things that is difficult about owning an EV. If you want to charge outside your home, it can be confusing. Thankfully, this is changing as GM is now adopting the Tesla charging standard, also known as the NACS (North American Charging Standard).

This is an important step for the charging and advancement of EVs, as the NACS or Tesla charger is the simplest charger out there. Yet, other companies have decided to make bulky chargers that are difficult to use, like CCS charging. In fact, I even bought a CCS adapter for my Tesla to use some of the charging near me at Harmon's Grocery.

It's crazy to me that anyone would choose to use a CCS adapter over the NACS charger that Tesla uses.

With this announcement that GM is going to use the Tesla charging standard, this means that GM will start building their vehicles with this charging in 2025. GM customers will be able to access 12,000 Tesla Superchargers and more starting in early 2024.

This builds on progress made to-date through the Ultium Charge 360 initiative to expand access for residential, work, and public charging.

This is an important collaboration with Tesla and there will be much more of this to come. See our report on how Tesla cornered the automotive market with its charging network and this deal.

More Companies To Come

For has also stated that they will use the Tesla charging standard. There is a reason that Tesla is the leader in EVs. Elon Musk and Tesla took the risk to develop EVs way back in 2012, and it is paying off. Ford will begin building their vehicles with the NACS charging standard.

There are companies, like Electrify America, that rely on CCS charging, as well as those who have adopted Chademo charging, but both of these are very clunky and come with large cables that are heavy and difficult to use.

More companies are going to have to adopt the NACS charging standard as Tesla continues to flood the world with Superchargers. I expect to hear news that Lucid Motors will adopt the Tesla charging standard, along with some of the Chinese EV companies.

Aptera, the company building the solar paneled EV, is already using this charging standard and this was a smart move by Aptera. I expect to see Aptera vehicles being sold next year.

More and more companies are going to adopt this standard, and it is because Tesla is far and away leading the EV revolution.

What other companies do you think will adopt the NACS charging standard?
