Subaru Crosstrek And New WRX Are Best Picks Again For Retaining Their Value

Are the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek and 2022 Subaru WRX a good value for new car shoppers? J.D. Power says they are best in their segment in retaining their value. Check out the complete report here.

What are good reasons to buy a 2022 Subaru Crosstrek or 2022 Subaru WRX? They will hold their value better than all other models in their segment. A new report from J.D. Power says the Crosstrek wins the subcompact segment, and the WRX wins the sports car segment in its latest 2022 ALG Residual Value Awards for Canada. Both models win their segments again.

ALG, the division of J.D. Power known for projecting automotive residual values, recognizes the new vehicles projected to hold the highest percentage of the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) after four years for mainstream brands.

Why is this important for new car buyers to know?

Retaining value can make the most significant difference when you trade in your vehicle after 3-5 years. You'll get more for your trade-in than other models in the same category. If you plan on keeping your new car for 3-5 years, depreciation (loss of value) is typically your primary expense during ownership. The award shows shoppers which vehicle will best retain its value.

Power says, “This is a vital consideration for car buyers when assessing the total cost of ownership for a particular vehicle whether the vehicle is financed, leased, or purchased with cash.”

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek took home top honors in the Subcompact SUV segment. Its seventh consecutive segment win, the Crosstrek has never finished outside of the top three since its introduction for the 2014 model year.

What is the price of the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek?

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek comes in five trim levels for customers. The base trim is priced from $23,570, Premium ($24,720), Sport ($27,920), Limited ($29,420) and Crosstrek Hybrid ($37,895). Prices include destination and delivery fees ($1,125).

In the Sports Car segment, J.D. Power says "the combination of impressive performance and year-round versatility" helped secure the seventh straight win for the 2022 Subaru WRX. Because the WRX comes with Subaru's Symmetrical all-wheel-drive, it won’t be sitting in the garage all winter like other sports cars.

What is the price of the 2022 Subaru WRX?

Subaru of America has not announced pricing on the new fifth-generation WRX.

The 2022 WRX will likely get a significant bump in price. The current price of the 2021 WRX is $28,420 with the 6-speed manual, including the destination fee. The Lineartronic CVT costs an extra $1,900. The base model will still be less than $30,000, making it a good performance value. The 2022 Subaru WRX GT with the Performance Transmission (CVT) will cost around $2,000 more than 6-speed manual models.

When will the 2022 WRX arrive in the U.S.?

The 2022 Subaru WRX should arrive this spring. There will be delays in production because of the ongoing global microchip shortage and the recent Subaru plant shutdown where the Japanese automaker manufactures the WRX. Stay tuned.

In the latest ALG Canadian residual value awards, the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek and 2022 Subaru WRX are best again in the Subcompact SUV and Sports Car segments. Both new models are projected to hold the highest percentage of the manufacturer’s suggested retail price after four years.
