Subaru Could Issue Massive Recall Affecting Many U.S. Models

A massive Subaru recall could be coming to Japan and will also affect many U.S. models. Will your Subaru be on the recall list?

When it rains it pours on Subaru Corporation. Reports out of Japan say the Japanese automaker is about to issue a huge recall that will affect several hundred thousand vehicles in Japan and the U.S. because of a faulty engine part. A report from The Asahi Shimbun says Subaru will be reporting the huge recall in Japan to the transport ministry by November 5.

According to sources in Japan, “a valve spring could break and hamper the workings of the engine.” The report says every vehicle Subaru manufactures, except for their Mini vehicles, (not sold in the U.S.) are affected which means hundreds of thousands of Subaru vehicles in the U.S. could be recalled.

This would include all models like Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, Impreza, Legacy, WRX, WRX STI, and BRZ sports coupe. It would also include the Toyota 86 jointly produced with Subaru and uses the same Boxer engine.

The report did not say which model years are affected by the faulty engine part. All Subaru vehicles are powered by a Boxer engine and many models may be using the same valve spring that is causing the potential engine issue. The sources say in Japan alone, the recall will likely apply to hundreds of thousands of vehicles. The costs for the planned recall over the engine part problem could exceed 25 billion yen ($223 million US) in Japan alone.

Subaru could take another image hit

If the report is accurate, the huge recall will also affect thousands of vehicles in Canada, Australia, the UK, and Europe. The engine valve spring issue along with the latest WRX/STI engine failure lawsuits in the U.S., and the fuel mileage falsification scandal in Japan could further damage the Japanese automaker’s image.

Torque News will follow this story and bring customers the latest updates on the potential huge Subaru recall. Stay tuned to see what model year Subaru Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, Impreza, Legacy, WRX, WRX STI, and BRZ models are being recalled. Subaru Corporation is expected to report this to the transport ministry in Japan by November 5 when they release their financial statement for the half-year period.

I have a 2012 Forester that had been wrecked before I bought it at 6,000 miles.
So it came with a SALVAGED title, meaning original owner turned it over to his insurance company in a settlement after the wreck. No mechanical damage just sheet metal. My question.....will Subaru recalls be voided because of the salvaged title?????? Some one out there know????? Help Please!!!

My son's 97 Outback had head gasket fail at 130,000 miles.
Problem with many 2.5L engines because Subaru had gaskets made in CHINA!!!
They are too thin!! Head & block made from two different metals that expand and contract when hot or cold. He pulled the engine and replaced head gaskets with FEL-PRO which are thicker. Subaru Turbo engines have thicker head gaskets. Also, open deck engine vs closed deck engine.

Have 2013 outback with Boxer. Always used full synthetic and changed oil at their recommended 5000 miles or sooner. Had to add oil every 2300 miles, did oil consumption test.....twice and did not pass either. I was never notified of class action but Suburu said they notified everyone......bull. Since they would not do anything I took them to small claims court in our state and Suburu sent someone driving 600+ miles to the court. They offered me $1500 to go away which I eventually took as the Magistrate in the case said since I had never opted out of the class action (hard to opt out when I never received or knew of suit) I automatically agreed to the settlement of the suit. He suggested I take the $1500. If everyone did this it might make Suburu step up to the plate. By the way, in my second consumption test I missed passing by 7/10 of an ounce. You had to burn 10 oz in 1100 miles.

The Ascent hasn't been "maligned with recalls", and you should know better. This is the second article where you make up a false claim. The Ascent has had *zero* vehicles recalled and *one* recall non-event where *9* consumer cars (293 production cars, 284 of them not delivered to anyone) were checked *and cleared* and not recalled. All 293 of them did NOT need to be recalled.

That's out of 53,000 vehicles.

"...maligned with recalls" is a grossly inaccurate claim.

This is your second recent article where you have made inaccurate claims. May I ask why? Perhaps you need to vet your sources better.

They all should be recalled...my Subaru impresa sport just blew head gaskets for hthe 2 time. I HAVE NO CAR. And I to was never informed of a recall. But it's bull ..I have had nothing but problems and stalling out was an issue and very dandrous and yes oil consumption is a issue. I bought a new Subaru and I have no car. Nope no lemon law it has to bust 4 times. Now I have kids a car payment and no car. I WILL BLAST to the WORLD HOW BAD SUBARU HAS BEEN TO ME AND IT SOUNDS LIKE A LOT OF OTHERS AS WELL.

2015 Forester with 45k on it. Bought it brand new. Eyesight cameras have failed, dealer said 2200.00 to replace. Backup camera does not work, I guess it may be tied to the Eyesight system. Can no longer set the minutes on the clock. I bought the Subaru because they supposedly are built better but not in my experience. Very displeased with this vehicle, probably trade it in on a Honda or Toyota.

My wife's 2011 Outback 2.5 L (Manual Transmission) no longer has any power while accelerating, especially while going uphill . Not being the usual driver I found myself downshifting all the way to 3rd and driving in the slow lane just to stay up with traffic on a highway. I also noticed that the gas mileage has dropped off to the low 20s from the 28-29 mpg I was used to seeing. Had the spark plugs and air filter replaced but it has made no difference. Any ideas what to check next?

Subaru (Nissan) can't build a transmission worth 5 dollars. If Ford couldn't either in the 1960s when it came to racing, Carroll Shelby could and did. So they can land a man on the moon 50 years ago but they can't build a transmission. Sounds like their night job is working in the Senate or Congress.
