Should a 2019 Honda CR-V with 68,000 miles already need new fuel injectors?
Jarod Coleman, in a Honda CR-V community Facebook post, says his 2019 Honda CR-V already needs its fuel injectors replaced. If that isn't bad enough, when Honda does the replacement, they say the spark plugs and oil will need to be changed also because fuel will foul the plugs and dilute the oil with gas. But there's more.
The cost with everything else they recommend is close to $3,000.
However, the question is, why does a 2019 Honda CR-V with only 68,000 miles need the fuel injectors and injector joint pipe to be replaced?
Jarod, like many other Honda CR-V owners, purchased his vehicle with the expectation of reliability. However, with only 68,000 miles on it, it's starting to need expensive repairs. These are repairs he hadn't planned on or expected from a Honda vehicle, and it's a sentiment many can relate to.
He thought Honda CR-Vs were reliable.
He tried the cheap route, buying a couple of cans of fuel injection cleaner from the parts store and pouring it into the gas tank numerous times, but it didn't work.
Imagine Jarod's wife driving his CR-V to work (it's her car), and the CR-V's dashboard lights up with warning codes. She can't use the cruise control, and her small SUV's fuel mileage has dropped significantly, so she tells her husband something is seriously wrong with her car now.
On top of that, with the malfunction indicators lit up like a Christmas tree on the dash, the radio and navigation screen will automatically scroll without any input whenever the warning light comes on.
Now Jarod knows he has to get it to the dealer quickly.
He scheduled an appointment with the Honda dealer for a free multi-point vehicle inspection and to get the CR-V's problems diagnosed.
After four hours in the service bay, the service advisor tells Jarod he has a list of seven things that need to be done to get the CR-V running well again.
Jarod's 2019 Honda CR-V is parked next to his 2020 Toyota Camry
Jarod's jaw drops as he reads off the extensive list.
Here is the breakdown of the items being recommended by the Honda dealer:
- Diagnose the problem: $89.95
- Oil change: replace engine oil and filter - 74.93
- Software upgrade: $155.00
- Fuel Injector and Joint Pipe Replacement: $1,417.41
- Spark Plug Replacement (4): $324.72
- Cabin Air Filter Replacement: $59.63
- Engine Air Filter Replacement: $84.74
- Brake Job - Replace front pads and rotors: $592.02
Total: $2,798.40
Some tasks are easy for Jarod to handle himself, such as changing the engine air filter and cabin air filter. However, since he's not a mechanic, he'll need the rest of the work done by the Honda dealer to fix the bad fuel injectors. That will cost him about $2,000.
"Jeez," he says under his breath, "I thought Hondas were supposed to be reliable. My CR-V only has 68,000 miles; it shouldn't need all this work done."
In his Facebook post, Jarod says,
"I have a 2019 Honda CR-V with 68,000 miles. I have put in injector cleaner, but the poor drivability issue persists. It threw the P0172 "Fuel system too rich" code that occurred before I took it to the dealership.”
“They didn't just spring the injectors on me. I took it in to have it formally diagnosed, as I suspected the issue. It will light the dash up like a Christmas tree, and you can't use cruise control."
"I'm not good with cars so that I wouldn't attempt the injector and joint pipe replacement. Simple stuff like filters, etc. I can do that, and I can take the brakes to an independent shop, which will be cheaper than the dealer."
"But, the cost of the spark plugs, fuel injectors, software update, and oil, the dealership said, needed to be changed together due to the injectors being bad and leaking into the plugs, and oil is just unbelievable."
So, Is There a Problem with the 2019 Honda CR-V's Injectors?
There have been owner reports of issues with fuel injectors on some 2019 Honda CR-Vs, particularly those with the 1.5L turbo engine, like Jarod’s.
What are the issues?
These issues can manifest as rich fuel conditions, misfires, and illuminated check engine lights, sometimes related to an "emissions system problem" message.
Some owners on Reddit have reported needing to replace the fuel injectors, and in some cases, the issue has been linked to a recall for fuel injection software updates.
However, there is no 2019 Honda CR-V recall for defective fuel injectors.
What Are Other CR-V Owners Saying?
Reddit user Thundrbldr says, "My Honda CR-V has under 90K miles. I always used Top Tier gas. But the injectors are bad and need to be replaced. And the cost is $2,300."
"I'm telling the wife that if next time we need a new car, if I consider a Honda again, to smack me on the side of the head and remind me that Honda just can't seem to get its act together in designing engines. It's the second time we've had a CR-V have a major engine problem under 100K miles."
Consumer Reports Gives the 2019 Honda CR-V Low Scores
Consumer Reports says the 2019 Honda CR-V has an overall reliability score of 69/100. The fuel system/emissions gets a low score of only 1/5.
In the Consumer Reports owner survey, one owner said about the fuel injection system:
"All the dash lights were on. Steering, braking, and every safety light. I had to read up about it; other CR-Vs are having the same issues."
"The injectors are slowly dripping fuel, causing a fuel-rich situation when the car is started. This trips the emission systems fault to appear. We've waited two months for the dealer to get new injectors in."
What Will Jarod Do Next?
Jarod is going to ask Honda to pay for some of the cost of new fuel injectors, but he will be out of luck. His 2019 Honda CR-V is out of warranty (5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty), and they will not cover it.
Jarod will be stuck with the entire bill.
When he gets the bad news, Jarod will likely get rid of his 2029 CR-V and buy a Toyota.
He says, "If Honda offers me no kind of help, we will probably get rid of the CR-V and get another Toyota. I will look for an older 2020-2022 model year. I have a 2020 Toyota Camry now as my daily driver, and it's bulletproof."

I work at a Honda dealership and sell Honda. Did you ever ponder to blame the ethanol based fuel that you put in your car? This is why weedeaters last 1 season and have to be replaced. You are adding corn juice to gas to save money. 2nd question is why didnt yu spend the money on a service warranty? If you did it wouldn't cost you a dime right now. Also please dont add the brake job in there even though my CRV is previous generation has over 80k on the brakes and are fine. Maybe take it easy driving? Do you do your fluid services when required?

just replace the bad injectors and oil change. the spark plugs don't go bad because of fuel wash. fuel does get into the oil so the oil change is needed. the software update may be needed. change fuel filter after fuel system service. this should havecalready been done. food for thought. the alcohols and other additives in our fuels to lower emissions are very corrosive to metals and seals. its possible that the failure is related to this. injector manufacturers should already be making injectors out of materials resistant chemical damage

High pressure fuel injectors wearing and leaking at relatively low mileage is par for the course on Direct Injection engines. A lot of Hyundai’s injectors go bad even when still under warranty. (Hyundai will only approve replacement of the one bad injector, not all 4.)
Chevrolet high pressure injector seals go bad, causing a compression loss, and make a loud hissing noise. You can’t get the seals separately. You have to buy the complete injector, which comes with seals.
The injectors going bad on the Honda do not make it unreliable. Have the injectors replaced if you’re not comfortable doing it yourself. Then, change your oil and filter, and spark plugs yourself. The spark plugs are easy to replace. There are plenty of videos on YouTube on how to replace spark plugs.
By the way, Toyota is having their share of problems as well. There aren’t any trouble-free cars made anymore….(I am a retired, former ASE certified Master Automotive Technician with 44 years in the trenches.)

I experianced (intermittently 3X) the same dashboard christmas tree lightup with my 2019 CR-V. I thought it was a software issue because the problem always went away the next day.
I took the car in earler the year for an injector recall issue. I hope it fixed the problem.. The problem has not reoccurred this year (knock on wood).

I bought a 2024 Honda CRV, I had 7000 miles in it. Honda has a recall fornthe fuel injectors and something else that was major. I immediately sold the vehicle to a major online car dealer, didnt lose any money, didnt want the future headache. I also bought a Toyota, which is the brand I always buy. Dont know why I let myself be talked into buying a Honda. Also, the mileage I got from my hybrid was laughable, no where near what the specs say! Dont be fooled, buy a Toyota, Subaru, or Mazda..all 3 are more reliable!

Honda should do a recall. I’ve owned Hondas my whole life, and I’m starting to get disappointed in problems they have across the board and they don’t do a recall. Very frustrating.

I am going to be honest I spend $1,200 every 10,000 miles just in non-recurring maintenance on my VW Golf TDi, which also has direct injection. Oil, brakes, tires, and consumables are separate. I probably spend over $5000 per year on the car. Your Honda has direct injection, and it doesn't make sense to buy a vehicle over injection replacement. If you are too poor to run the car do not drive. What if you need tires and brakes at the same time? Will you sell a car for that? Besides, while direct injection might be challenging to replace, you can do the repair yourself. They are more difficult than port injectors, but I have four diesel injectors in my golf, and 7 in my Cummins (including the DPF), so since my parts are more than your parts AND labor, I am sure you'll prefer to keep the vehicle since the cost is so low. The injection system lasted sixty thousand on American gas. Use shell v-power from now on. Also, that doesn't mean the car is unreliable. Toyotas fall apart in other ways like the brake pedal and gas pedal bending and being miserable. The firewall is so thin you will die in a crash..maybe you shouldn't have a cheap vehicle if you are expecting perfection.

Gonna be honest there’s not enough info here and this guy sounds like a moron. There was a problem more than likely caused by an outside source possibly cheap gas and this guy started tinkering with things himself like putting fuel cleaner in. He only checked with the dealer.. so ultimately he probably has a paid off vehicle that will last long time but thinks a 2k repair is not worth it when he will be probably owe 3 to 4K down on a new vehicle and the cycle will repeat.people like this are why there are warning labels such as “don’t drink the battery acid”

The problem is the 1.5 liter engine with turbo,
You don’t need a turbo unless you’re racing, turbo means more problems more oil changes, injectors etc, etc
Buy a vehicle that doesn’t have a turbo or CVT transmission (does are bad too especially Nissan CVT transmission)

Should have bought an extended warranty. I had a 2000 Honda crv, transmission went out at 138,000 miles. Because I followed all the maintenance and did what I was supposed to do. A new transmission was about $3800.back then, the dealer called Honda corporation and they paid the majority of it and I paid $1200 and they also picked up the cost of a loaner car. Had a 3 year warranty on the new transmission and drove it until.it had 252,000 miles on it. Very pleased with what they did.
I currently have a 2017 Honda CRV with 52,000 miles with no problems that Honda didn't take care of. I always buy the extended warranty. No major problems at all. You have got to follow the maintenance if you don't you will have problems regardless of the manufacturer and the make and model of any vehicle. Fuel injectors need to be cleaned about every 30,000 miles. I love my Honda CRV.I also go to only 2 places to get my gas, Costco and shell.

Fuel injectors - $280
Spark plugs - $45
Air filter - $12
Oil filter $12
Cabin air filter $14
Replace brake pads and rotors - $140
Total $503
Oil, software and diagnostic $320
Grand total - $823 for a savings of $1975. Non of this required special tools. If you needed something special one of the larger auto parts stores would let you borrow them.
As someone else mentioned it’s likely the cheap grocery store gas that got you. Only use Top Tier fuel.

As a Technician myself. The truth is that the dealer will always charge you an outrageous amount of money for any repair. Those repairs don't cost that much the dealer is making money off of you from every angle possible. If you Purchase your Honda Brand parts online and have an independent shop do the repairs you will probably save an easy 1k. Trust me this is the reason I opened my own shop. And I am for the people . I tell all customers the truth. And in my opinion trading the car for another unless it's an equal trade is a waist of money. Its cheaper to fix the honda and not have payments for another vehicle

The issue with all of the 2018-21 crv and accords is that they are direct injected now and the injectors get carbon up real bad. It's not a computer issue is design. Also they all are prone to head gasket issues as well because of a cooling line cut in-between the cylinder walls and then they add a turbo which increases cylinder pressure and the head gasket fails. The turbos are also a common issue.
