Is there a problem with the Honda CR-V's radar safety technology?
"I am so mad at Honda. I am ready to get rid of this 2022 Honda CR-V. The Honda dealer tells me it will cost $4,300 to replace my radar unit, and it's not under warranty. I have to pay for it myself." That's what I hear Dan saying as he shares his frustration with other CR-V owners.
Dan Johnson says on the Honda CR-V Community Facebook page. "They have me so pissed off with Honda now. Would you believe the Honda dealership wants $4300 to replace the radar? Why is it so expensive, and why isn't it working properly? What is wrong with Honda's quality?"
"I would rather trade this CR-V off than pay that."
Dan is echoing the frustration of many CR-V owners.
Many Honda CR-V owners are not just unhappy but also seething with anger over the radar safety technology. Many owners find the lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control features to be more of a nuisance than a help. Here are a few comments from CR-V owners, each one a testament to their growing frustration.
CR-V Owners Sound Off
Nikki Dickens shares, "Mine went out too. It started at three months old, and it was under warranty. At 40,000 miles, it died, and we couldn't open the back, no cruise, nothing. The Honda dealer said it would be $3,000, but I had bought the extended warranty. It pisses me off because it was taken in at least five times to the dealer before we got beyond the 36,000 warranty, and they couldn't figure it out."
"I had to escalate to Honda USA, detailing everything before I got any resolution.”
"It took multiple times before the standard warranty was over (36,000 miles), so had I not bought the extended warranty, it would not have been covered. It's as if they suddenly discovered what was causing all the bells and whistles to go off after multiple appointments. Maybe that Honda dealership has a history of poor service?"
Another CR-V owner, Sherise, says, "I traded my CR-V and got a Prius for the better gas mileage."
Sherise Navidad continues, "Yeah, these 'safety features' almost caused me to wreck when I first got my CR-V. When it senses someone braking quickly in front of you, a bright flashing light appears on the dash, and it'll ding a few times. It scared the hell out of me, causing me to focus on it and not the situation I was in. I no longer have mine."
"It's the third Honda I've had with a lot of issues. I now drive a 2017 Toyota Prius and love it. She's slow, ugly, and good on gas."
Omar Williams shares, "All these fancy electronic features they put in cars these days are just not worth it to me. I want my car to get me from point A to point B reliably so I can focus on driving. I don't want the car driving for me or beeping at me whenever I back up or get too close to a curb (according to it)."
Jeff De Guzman - "It's better to buy a used Honda. The older ones are more reliable, with fewer electronic components that can be more expensive to repair when they break down. I would buy a used CR-V and save your money; no monthly payments and less to insure, and because it's old, you don't know about its cosmetic appearance, just maintenance, but a lot less than maintenance on these JUNK new vehicles."
Does the 2022 Honda CR-V have a problem with its radar?
According to reports from the Lemon Law Experts and Just Answer, the 2022 Honda CR-V, along with other Honda models, has been known to have issues with its radar and camera systems, particularly those related to the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS).
These issues can manifest as random warning messages, sudden speed changes, or false alerts for nonexistent obstacles. In some cases, the radar may need to be re-positioned or even replaced due to bending or other issues.
How Much Does the Radar Cost To Replace?
Repair Pal estimates that replacing a radar sensor on a Honda CR-V can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $4,000 or more, depending on the specific sensor, the extent of the damage, and whether a new bracket, programming, and recalibration are required. Labor costs can be substantial, potentially exceeding $1,850 for 10 hours of work.

Lemon Law Experts says, "The automaker has attributed problems with Honda Sensing and the AEB (auto emergency braking) system to the radars in affected vehicles. Honda has previously instructed dealers to re-position these radars. They redacted this explanation shortly after and told service providers that weather and other driving conditions will always affect Honda Sensing technologies. As of now, it appears that Honda has no fix."
The following is a list of Honda models that may have Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) problems:
- Honda Accord (2016–2022)
- Honda CR-V (2016–2022) (EX, EL and Touring)
- Honda Insight (2019–2022)
- Honda Passport (2016–2022)
- Honda Pilot (2016–2022)
Across model years 2016-2020, hundreds of complaints mention problems with the forward collision warning system in Honda CR-V small SUVs.
LLE says in the following formal complaint to NHTSA, one driver spoke about how their 2017 Honda CR-V would suddenly brake in the same place on a highway, "I was lightly braking as I approached an intersection where I needed to turn right. There were no vehicles in front of me."
"The weather was clear and dry, about 70 degrees. As I slowed, the AEB system flashed 'BRAKE' several times, and then the car came to a sudden and complete stop."
"The same thing happened to my CR-V at the same spot several months ago under the same circumstances. There was no other traffic ahead, and the weather was good. There is a metal plate on the road ahead of where these incidents took place."
What should Honda CR-V Owners do if they are having problems?
There isn't a general CR-V recall or widespread issue requiring the replacement of the radar sensor itself.
If you are experiencing issues with the Honda CR-V radar sensor or other Honda Sensing features, it's best to consult a Honda dealership for diagnosis and potential solutions. If you are unable to resolve the issue, escalate it to Honda USA customer service.

As somebody who works nice cars for a living that seems excessive so without knowing the history of your vehicle what happened to it was it the right of it failed was the car involved in a collision and damage the radar and brackets and hardware where their wires damaged road and damage you need to give us a little bit more information before I can determine why it's so expensive generally the radar costs are approximately $1,000 and the labor to replace it in the complications are between 3 to 4 hours that includes calibration and replacement of the part if that's all we're doing but if you had some physical damage like the front end was in a collision and the courseport was damaged or broken or the bumper was broken or something else that we're not aware of then it can be substantially higher but like I tell all customers if prices are high just like we go to a doctor get a second opinion another doctor or another technician who knows what they're doing

I have a 2021 Honda Pilot with around 54000 miles on it that needs the Honda sensing windshield camera replaced. I was quoted $1900 to fix the problem, but held off. I complained to Honda of America, but they were no help. They just said sorry but ut out of warranty. Valid argument, but this is a very expensive vehicle I'm still paying on and I didn't expect such a large expense so soon. I bought the camera for around $800 from an onlkne parts store and plan to install it myself and get it calibrated somewhere.

I have a 2022 CR-V, the lane assist tends to read cracks in the road as if im leaving the lane and it will try to pull me over. Also i have had times that the car has braked hard even tho nothing was in front if me and i was almost rear ended once because of it. It will also flash "steering required" even tho im holding the steering wheel tight. Honda needs a recall on these issues

My 2018 honda crv ex has had the multipurpose windshield camera completely replaced twice and reprogrammed multiple times. It is frustrating , time consuming and expensive. Makes you wonder about their technicians all the way to corporate. Honda did cover a portion of one replacement because I complained so much

Yeah don’t fall for it. You can get them cheaper. In factI have an extra one that is in perfect working condition I’d sell. Those radar units are a scam when it comes to pricing

I got a used 2017 CRV just short of a year ago for $20k and in less than a year I've had to have the AC Compressor seal replaced and drop another $2200 thus far on a new CPU and fuel injectors, and yes, I have a power train warranty but apparently it covers none of this.

I have 2020 honda pilot elite. I have same problem with radar. It started malfunctioning right after replacing battery at the Honda. They gave me a estimate to repair $3000. I have had so many problems with this pilot.
I dont think i will ever buy honda again.

We bought a 2025 crv hybrid touring model and it also has issues with these features. ACC is no longer an option on the highway because it kicks out on the highway constantly. We use the regular cruise. I also had an issue going through a construction zone where it applied the brakes very hard thinking we were going to hit something. There were pylons close by and uneven pavement but the driver behind me was likely unhappy with the sudden brake check.

Our 2025 CR-V back up safety system only sees a car when it’s right behind us, we had a 2021 CR-V that gave us a warning when a car was approaching at least 75 feet away from us.
The front radar has braked the car multiple times when nothing was in front of us, the lane assist constantly loses the lane, our 2921 seldom did that.
I took it to my dealership where I bought it and they say everything is fine.

My dashboard lit up and LKAS light would come on for 10 minutes and then go off. Dealer says it will cost $2k as its associated with my rear view mirror sensor. Doesn't make sense to me. So I took the lane assist button to off to try to alleviate the issue. There should be a recall if multiple people are having the same issue.

I have a 2019 CRV and have experienced similar problems. On the highway, in clear weather, on a clear road with no obstacles or other cars, my car will flash BRAKE on the dashboard and suddenly automatically reduce my speed. Also, the beeping notification that there is a car in my blindspot when changing lanes randomly does not work. Also, all road mitigation features become inoperable in a heavy rainstorm.

No auto manufacturer makes their own electronics. Nothing to do with Honda. Be like us smart people who know this and purchase an extended warranty. This item alone would have covered the cost of one.

Make sure all your tires are the same size and height. We had a problem with our Odyssey, come to find out it was a loaner tire from Discount tire, it was off on the height by just 5. It threw the whole system out of focus. When we matched the other tires to get them all exactly the same the radar returned to normal.

With all these so called “accident avoidance features” why are car insurance rates consistently going up instead of down? Apparently drivers are getting dumber and more distracted so cars have to get smarter.
