Don’t Buy A New Subaru BRZ Right Now Unless You Do One Crucial Thing

The 2024 Subaru BRZ arrives now, but you may want to wait to buy one unless you do this one crucial thing.

Subaru is known for its all-wheel-drive models, and the 2024 Subaru BRZ is not among them. The BRZ sports coupe is a rear-drive and is excellent on the track but not so good in foul weather. The BRZ is the only Subaru model that does not have standard (or even available) all-wheel drive. But before I cover that, let's look at BRZ's sales performance

The BRZ pulls up in last place.

The Subaru BRZ sports car is still the bottom dweller in SOA's lineup, with 273 sport coupe sales in December, compared with 325 models delivered in December 2022. BRZ dropped 16.0 percent in December but still has a 25.2 percent increase for the year, with 4,188 sport coupes delivered to customers in 2023.

I know why the Subaru BRZ doesn't sell well in December. It's because sports cars are bought when the weather warms up, and the roads are dry. Rear-drive sports cars are not designed for deep snow, ice, and muddy conditions.

The 273 BRZ sales were probably in the warm weather states like California, Florida, and Arizona. That's where you can drive the BRZ year-round. And many are used as daily drivers.

But there is one way you can drive your BRZ if you live in a cold northern climate. Just bolt on a good set of all-weather/snow winter-rated snow tires

The BRZ is not the best choice for first-time drivers in the snow, but it doesn't have to stop you. You can put good winter/snow tires on the BRZ, and new and seasoned drivers can learn how to drive in the snow.

Taking a winter snow-driving class can be a good idea to learn how to handle ice and snow regardless of what car you buy.

I recently covered the most satisfying Subaru models, and the BRZ gets a 3/5 predicted owner satisfaction. It could be because it's sitting in the garage and not driven in the winter.

However, according to Consumer Reports, the 2024 Subaru BRZ is ranked #1 of 10 Sports cars in the four and five-seat sports car categories. Consumer Reports says the BRZ sports coupe is predicted to be more reliable than other new cars.

What is the best BRZ trim level? You can check out the new 2024 BRZ tS.

The 2024 BRZ tS is the new trim level for 2024. The tS comes with a six-speed close-ratio manual transmission and EyeSight for the first time. I covered the new tS sport coupe in detail here.

Other upgrades include a sport-tuned suspension from Subaru Tecnica International, high-performance Brembo brakes, 18-inch wheels in a dark gray metallic finish wrapped in 215/40 R18 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, tS badging, and unique interior upgrades.

The BRZ tS also includes:

  • Heated exterior power mirrors.
  • An upgraded audio system with a 2-channel amplifier and two additional speakers.
  • Blind-spot detection with Lane Keep Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.
  • Steering Responsive Headlights with High Beam Assist.
  • Starlink safety and security.

What is the price of the 2024 Subaru BRZ?

The BRZ Premium with a 6-speed manual gearbox has a starting price of $31,315. BRZ Limited (6-speed manual) has a starting MSRP of $33,815. The Limited with an automatic transmission starts at $34,765. The new BRZ tS MSRP starts at $36,465. Prices include destination and delivery fees ($1,120).

The 2024 Subaru BRZ arrives now, and you can have fun driving it in the snow.
