An All-New Electric Subaru STe? A Report Says It’s Coming In 3 Years

When Subaru dropped the performance-tuned WRX STI, it was a sad day in Subaru land. The next-generation WRX is a decent sport-tuned model, but it's not an STI. But if a new report is accurate, an all-new electric STe (Subaru Tecnica electric) will hit U.S. shores sometime in late 2026 or early 2027.

Torque News reported that Subaru Corporation filed a patent in Germany's Patent and Trademark Office for an "STe" (Subaru Tecnica electric) electrified performance sub-brand for hybrids and EVs. The patent was filed in March.

A recent report from Motor Trend says Subaru Corporation will launch the new STe electric performance car in three years with an on-sale date in late 2026 as a 2027 model year. 

Motor Trend says because of new production costs and that the new Subaru STe performance car will be the flagship of Subaru Tecnica International's performance division, a $55,000 starting price for a new electrified version is reasonable to expect.

Why the STe?

Subaru is ramping up its electrification plans, and the STe is an essential model for the Japanese automaker. One of Subaru's core values has always been its performance car division, and that won't change with its new EV plans. 

Motor Trend says, "Relatively affordable dedicated performance cars of any stripe are a dwindling breed, so any new entry in this enthusiast-oriented segment should be strongly encouraged and loudly applauded, especially one that promulgates Subaru's penchant for drifty rally-inspired driving.”

When Subaru dropped the WRX STI when the next-generation 2022 WRX was launched around the globe, they began preparations for the all-new electric STI, now to become the STe from Subaru Tecnica electric.

Subaru said, "We will utilize the insight from this project (the all-electric Subaru STI E-RA concept) as an initiative for a future electrified society. STI will continue to create new values so that cars will remain enjoyable and enrich the lives of our customers in an increasingly decarbonized world, for all Subarus."

It's now expected that Subaru customers will see an accelerated plan with its performance division STI (Subaru Tecnica International) and bring a new hybrid or all-electric Subaru WRX STe sooner than expected.

Motor Trend says performance and electric enthusiasts should expect to see the new 2027 Subaru STe in late 2026. Stay tuned.
