What are the best new 2-Row SUVs for families? Based on long-term reliability, value retention, the highest safety scores, above-average cargo space, and fuel efficiency, a new report from Kelly Blue Book ranks the 2022 Subaru Outback midsize SUV among the best midsize SUVs you can buy now.

In its best midsize SUVs for 2022, Kelly Blue Book says, “the midsize SUV is now the official American family car.” KBB says it’s because they have lots of room inside for families, plenty of cargo space for long road trips, and all-wheel drive for dealing with severe weather. Based on KBB ratings, the nine models below are the best midsize SUVs for 2022.

In other 2-Row SUV rankings, iSeeCars says the 2022 Subaru Outback is the best quality in the “small” SUV (2-Row SUV category). According to the latest study by Consumer Reports, Outback is among the best in its best SUVs under $40,000 rankings in the 2022 model year 2-Row category.

What sets the 2022 Outback apart?

The Outback offers a car-like ride and handling if you don’t want the bulky feel of a larger SUV. The Outback offers 8.7-inches of ground clearance, which is more than some SUVs, and the Outback has a superior safety rating from IIHS. Fuel mileage is also better than many SUVs.

What is the 2022 Subaru Outback fuel mileage?

The EPA fuel mileage rating of the 2022 Outback XT 2.4-liter turbo is 23/30 city/highway mpg and 26 combined mpg. The estimated fuel economy of the standard 2.5-liter engine is 26/33 mpg city/highway and 29 combined mpg. The EPA says the new 2022 Outback Wilderness gets an estimated 22/26 city/highway mpg and 24 combined mpg.

The highest safety scores

The 2022 Subaru Outback and 2022 Subaru Forester score the highest safety ratings over the last five years from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Both SUVs earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS and five stars from the NHTSA.

What is the price of the 2022 Subaru Outback?

The 2022 Outback comes in eight trim levels; the base trim is priced from $27,845, Premium ($30,270), Limited ($34,720), Touring ($38,620), Onyx Edition XT ($36,270), new for 2022, Outback Wilderness ($38,120), Limited XT ($39,120), and Touring XT ($41,070). Pricing includes $1,125 destination and delivery fees.
