Honda AC Failed? A Condenser Failure May Be Covered Under An Extended Warranty Program

Honda America has had a tough time with AC condensers in recent years. Here is why if your Honda's AC condenser has failed the cost of the repair may be covered

Honda is extending the warranty on AC condensers to a full ten years for select models like its Civic. Torque News expects that this warranty extension may spread to other models. If you own a Clarity, Accord, Insight, or other Honda model and your AC condenser fails outside of the vehicle's 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty period, you should visit a dealer and ask if Honda will cover the needed repairs.

This is not a recall. It is important to understand that recalls are related to safety, and a condenser may not fall under that category. The number of owners reporting condenser failures seems to be at a high point for models built from 2018 through 2020. Here is what one 2018 Honda Accord owner reported to CarComplaints.com: "It was warm outside today, so on my lunch break at work I went to go get food, got in the car to find no AC. The A/C seats were blowing cold air, but not the vents.I went to Honda, he said the systems are separate. He confirmed the AC was not working. They found out that all the refrigerant was leaking out. He said during manufacturing it must’ve gotten caught on something. AC system had to be replaced. Under warranty."

What To Do If Your Honda's AC Condenser Fails
If your Honda's AC condenser fails we suggest taking the vehicle to an authorized Honda dealer. Ask that it be repaired under Honda's extended warranty program. If the dealer declines to cover the cost, phone Honda's owner hotline and ask for help. The number is (800) 999-1009. Ask if there are any technical service bulletins (like this one)describing condenser issues for your vehicle, and if Honda can cover your repair costs. If they agree, Honda will work with the dealer and you will have saved hundreds.

If Honda declines, consider taking the vehicle to an independent repair shop. You may pay less there than at a Honda dealer. It is important to get a detailed receipt and to retain that receipt in case Honda later settles a class action suit and pays owners for repairs already conducted.

What Is An AC Condener?
An air conditioning condenser is one of the key parts of any HVAC cooling system, Replacing an AC condenser in a Honda can cost between $500 and $900 at a dealer. Independent shops may charge less.

How Do I Know If My Condenser Fails?
If your Honda's AC is not blowing cold, it could be a minor issue. The first thing to check is your engine's coolant level. You can see how to do that in your manual. If it is not a simple problem, the AC compressor may have a leak that let the refrigerant levels drop to a point where the system cannot blow cold.

If you have a Honda and your AC required repairs, please tell us about it in the comments section below. Your experience may help a fellow owner.

It's happening with my 2012 Accord Coupe as well and I have 96,400 mi. This started after the 30,000 mi. 3 yr warranty expired. I just avoided the Honda Hassle and paid my mechanic to fix it.

2013 Crosstour. Fell in love with the car and about a year in the AC went out. Getting in contact with corporate immediately, as I’ve paid $1000 to have the condenser replaced and it lasted exactly 3 days. Furious

I literally just purchased a brand new 2022 odyssey on February 1 2022. It was cold outside so I never tested the ac. Yesterday February 8 (which made a week since I purchase) it was warm and I turned the ac on and it didn’t blow cold air. Took it to the dealership today February 9 and they are telling me my condenser has a hole in it from a roadside hazard and are wanting me to come out of pocket $1300 after I just paid 50k plus dollars. I am beyond livid because first of all how do they know for sure it was caused by a roadside hazard and not an error while building the car(it was special ordered) and on the check off list it doesn’t say that the ac was checked so can o fight this?

I also have the air conditioner issue on my 2002 Honda Civic. We kept putting coolant in but the air conditioner worked a day and then stopped. We changed the sensors, belt etc. but to no avail.

It also has oil leaks that make the car overheat.

I bought a 2018 Honda Civic last summer- AC started blowing hot air a week or two ago. It only has 33,000 miles on it. Mechanic said it's the evaporator core, $1250 to fix. Does anyone know if I can get this covered by Honda? I specifically bought my daughter this car because it's safe and "reliable." I'm feeling suckered.

I bought a 2018 Honda Civic
The AC started blowing warm air
When I took it to the dealer and told them about the extended warranty on the compressor they ran a diagnostic test and said it wasn’t the compressor that was bad but the condenser and charged me $501. My extended warranty through another insurance covered the cost of the rest of the repairs but I was still out $501.

I am currently in the same situation the dealer said it is not covered under warranty due to it being rock/debris damage. That didn’t make sense to me they want to charge me $1,080 for parts and labor. I told them I would look elsewhere they charged me $150 diagnostic fee. Ugh so irritating. It gets so hot in texas. I need my AC.

I have a 2019 Accord. I took it to Honda for an oil change and registration and the service guy told me that my ac condenser needed to be replace and that it would be covered under an extended warranty. They replaced it under an hour.

I went into the Honda dealership because my AC system wasn’t working and I knew the condenser was covered under extended warranty. The person I was talking to at Honda told me that the compressor in my car has a leak and it will be $2,390 to fix. He said that the condenser is under warranty but not the compressor is not and total cost would be the $2,390. When I told him that I didn’t have the money to fix that he said that they would need to charge me $180 service fee because the problem was not just the condenser. So I had to pay the $180 and I am not sure what to do now.

2019 Accord Hybrid (base) A/C not working. Dealer replaced condenser after confirming it leaked. N/C car still under three year/36k warranty.

Will new condenser be covered under extended warranty?

On June 2,2022, I purchased my Honda 2019 Hatchback from the dealer as it was a leased car and end of lease is June 6, 2022. The Dealer at Fremont, CA said that they will do the paperwork which should include an inspection. On June 4, 2022, the AC failed. I took it back to the dealer who did the paperwork and they said it is out of warranty and if I want it repaired, it will cost me an estimate of $2,100.
The paperwork of maintenance showed that condenser was replaced 12/2021. They said that the condenser has a lifetime warranty but not the compressor. Reading all the write ups of this Honda AC problem, I think that Honda should offer a warranty for both the compressor and condenser as they work together. I'm very disappointed with the Honda service as they should inform the public about this problem and every mechanic I had spoken to says that most of the cars they work on that's Honda complains about the same problem.

I just bought a 2014 Honda Civic SI and the ENTIRE ac system had to be replaced 34 days after buying it . It’s $2,000 to replace everything and the compressor was sparking so bad it caught stuff on fire ( basically burned it but was not up in flames ) I am going to submit something to Honda . This is poor work/parts if you ask me . Even just a partial reimbursement would help . For $20,000 I should not be paying another $2,000 32 days later ☹️

Our 2013 Honda Odyssey van has needed a new AC compressor three years in a row now. The dealer replaced it first while under warranty. Then the warranty expired (100k miles) so we went to another garage. Now the following summer, it is not working again and we are trying a different but more reputable garage for repair. How is this even happening? Three times and nobody knows why it is failing thus far, just that the compressor is dead.

2019 Honda pilot elite - 2k miles over the 36k mile warranty and my a/c stopped working. Dealership says the compressor went out and exploded metal fragments throughout the hvac system. The entire system will need to be replaced. It's very costly for me and I'm at a loss of what to do.
I have opened a case with Honda case management and I'm considering getting a lawyer because I have had nothing but problems with this car since purchasing new. Has any one had success in getting this covered in full?

I have the exact same issue with my Honda pilot touring. Bought December 2016. The dealership says not covered. Just happens. Will cost me$6300 to replace the entire ac system over 2 days! I don't know who to complain to but this is ridiculous for such a expensive car that I expected to not have such issues. Does anyone have suggestions on how to make honda be responsible for a poor product. Thanks

Wife has a 2017 Honda Civic. Her condenser went out in 2021 and was replaced under warranty. It’s may 2022 and confessor went out causing another issue and now to replace the condenser ar a Honda they are quoting $1,990 to replace it, and it’s not covered. They say it’s not covered under any warranty so we will be calling the Honda hotline and can update my comment after.

The A/C in 2018 Accord with VERY low mileage didn't blow cold air when I first tried it this year. The dealer diagnosed a bad condenser and quoted $755. for the repair, but when the work was completed there was no charge under this warranty.

Just paid $188 for inspection, to be told that there was a large hole in the condenser and it wasn't covered under the warranty... I'm calling corporate tomorrow a.m.. I think I'd know if I had hit something big... with no other damage. The ac had worked, then started to act up sporadically, then stopped working altogether over the course of a couple of months.

LESLIE Volante (not verified)    June 2, 2022 - 9:59PM

I have a Honda accord hybrid. The ac started acting up a month ago, not getting as cold, and now blowing warm air. Brought to the dealership, and was charged $188 for it to be inspected, and told it wasn't covered by the extended warranty because there was a large hole in it... except I find it hard to believe I would miss the fact that something blew into the car hard enough to create a large hole... and that somehow it would slowly become less effective over a couple of months despite having a large hole... and quoted me $1200+ for a repair, and that the condenser was on back ordrr. Della Honda of Glens Falls NY also was doing the oil change, and it was documented that tires were rotated, which they were not - I have scratches on the wheels (painted), and the two with scratches were not moved; they also noted that my tire pressure was 33 front and 32 back (supposed to 33 all around), the car was pulling badly to the left, went back to dealership, 5:30, everyone was gone except one guy in service, who got the blast from me... but couldn't help me... I have to go back... so why should I believe them about the ac condenser? Ordered one off Amazon, $102, local honest mechanic putting it in, 1 1/2 to 2 hours labor.
I'm calling corporate tomorrow and the dealerships service manager.

The A/C on my CIVIC stopped working a little over 3 years in. I took it to the dealer and they fixed it under an extended warranty. Got if back the same day.No charge.

i bought a new 2017 honda cr-v it currently only has 030881 miles. thr air conditioner stoped working a couple years ago. i paid 20k for this car, i live in southern calif. i expected this car to be my first ever brand new car and probably my last. the most important thing to me was to be comfortable with air conditioning, for myself and two grandchildren. that has not been the case and i believe i deserve it. i worked long hard years for this car they should honor the replacement one hundred percent.

This A/C condensor problem is widespread with certain models. I have a 2018 Honda Accord, and the A/C cold air gradually stopped. I went directly to the Honda dealership service center, and they replaced the faulty condensor for free. Not even a "diagnosis" service fee. It is covered as part of an "extended warranty" due to initial Honda manufacturer defects. I didn't even have to ask for the extended warranty - they already knew about it and their defective condensors. My suggestion is to go directly to your Honda service center and mention the extended warranty. I didn't pay anything. If they try to charge you, call Honda directly (owners.honda.com).

My 2018 Civic was not blowing cold A/C. I took it to Honda just this morning and the compressor was replaced until the extended warranty in your article above. Yay!

I had a Honda Civic 2017 mode. Two months ago I found the A/C didn’t work. It is not blowing cold air. Yesterday I drop my car to Honda of Kirkland for servicing. I picked up my car today without any charging. The A/C issue has been fixed. Now it works well.

This happened on my wife's 2016 Civic. She's not a big AC user, so it's hard to say when it started, but likely over the last couple days. Went to our local Honda dealer (thankfully I did some googling and found the TSB mentioning this), and they were very accommodating and took care of everything that day. No diagnosis fee, no charges at all. Was pleasantly surprised how easy it was.

Honda CRV 2018. Outside of warranty. Condenser leaking. Talked nicely with the service rep. Honda fixed it at no cost as “goodwill”

well...nothing goodwill about it. they were faulty and they released a service bulletin for this that they would replace them. i am still waiting for them to fix mine but ofcourse they found compressor has gone bad too and i am hoping the goodwll helps fix that. btw..as per my google search both condensor and compressors have a faulty design but honda didn't obvously include compressors in that service bulletin since the failure occurences were lesser than condesnor issues.
