Chrysler replacing cylinder heads on select Pentastar V6 powered models

After receiving hundreds of complaints about ticking, stalling, power loss and misfire conditions (thus check engine lights) in select vehicles powered by the popular 3.6L Pentastar V6, the Chrysler Group has begun replacing the cylinder heads on some problematic vehicles – with as many as 7,500 vehicle affected in the US.

According to Automotive News, the Chrysler Group believes that roughly one half of 1% of the vehicles sold in the US with the Pentastar V6 could have an unexplained cylinder head issue with the bank containing the #2 cylinder. This problem can reportedly cause a ticking noise that can escalate to misfire conditions that can cause stalling and a loss of power…although Chrysler points out that it does not render the vehicle inoperable.

It should be noted that this is not a recall but rather, owners of Pentastar powered Chrysler Group vehicles who are experiencing these issues can visit their local dealership where the cylinder heads will be replaced under warranty. The Chrysler Group began replacing the heads under warranty after a handful of complaints were filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration pertaining to the new Pentastar powered Jeep Wrangler SUVs. Unfortunately for Chrysler, this problem isn’t specific to the open aired Jeep as select Dodge Journey, Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan models have also been found to exhibit this problem. A variation of the 3.6L Pentastar V6 is also used in the Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Avenger, Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler 300, Chrysler 200 and the new Ram 1500 – although none of those vehicles have been mentioned in the statements involving the problematic Pentastar engines.

Chrysler first recognized this problem around six weeks ago, at which point they began manufacturing a replacement cylinder head that is “more robust” along with fitting all newly produced Pentastar engines with these beefier heads. Chrysler has not identified the exact cause of the problem or the specific issue with the cylinder head that is occurring but a company representative has explained that the problems are a culmination of a variety of factors including (but not limited to) the quality of gasoline and the driving situations. Based on that, it sounds like the Pentastar engines are experiencing early detonation that can cause a ticking noise and as time goes on – more problems could creep up due to the incorrect firing of the #2 cylinder. If someone was to put very low quality, low octane gasoline in their Pentastar vehicle and then run the vehicle hard in very hot conditions, there is a good chance that detonation could be the issue especially when the driver keeps running the same gasoline and driving hard. However, the Chrysler Group believes that the variables needed to experience these problems will prevent the problem from occurring in most Pentastar powered vehicles. That being said, running higher quality gasoline could prevent those Pentastar powered vehicles from running into the #2 cylinder issue.

The problem for Chrysler now is that cylinder heads are not something that a company typically builds in excess for mass replacements, like an oil filter or even a headlight lens. Because of that, there is a very high demand for these heartier cylinder heads which the company is having a hard time meeting which has forced some dealerships to hold onto customer vehicles while waiting for replacement parts – all the while having to pay for a rental car while the other is without their own vehicle.

In late July, a source stated that there were approximately 1,300 Chrysler Group vehicles sitting on dealership lots while they waited for the replacement cylinder heads with an average of 300 new vehicles arriving at dealerships each week. The average number of reported cylinder head issues has now increased to around 500 per week. Luckily, the Chrysler Group sent enough replacement cylinder heads to dealerships around the country to address some 3,000 vehicles but with as many as 7,500 vehicles affected around the country – those owners who have not experienced the problem thus far could be waiting for parts once they do.

2010 T and C with 4 liter V6 engine. Burned valves on #4 cylinder in February with 124,00 kms on the clock. Now burned valves on #2 and #4 cylinders and mileage 136,000 kms. Can this issue be prevented? Chrysler claim they have not had an issue with this engine.

Call Chrysler customer service and ask for them to expedite the part and help with repairs. This is a manufacturer error and should be a recall, imo. They should be responsible for the costs of repairs since it was their mistake.

I found that #2 cylinder athe fire wall is leaking oil onto the spark plug . I did a tune up and that is how I found it ,this is the first time that I have did a tune up so I would have never found that had I not done the tune up myself !
I no what the problem is , it is the valve seal , I was going to fix it myself but I don't have a repair manual for that engine and don't no weather I can get the valve spring off on that engine without removing the head , that is all that is holding me back ,I could use some help on that INFO if anybody has it , that would help a lot Thanks ! 2014 Dodge Journey SXT 3.6L V6 (f*ck-a-star) engine. Was experiencing heating problems (I live in Arizona where during the summer heat can get to 120° +!) Radiator fan replaced myself. New coolant hoses. Then I noticed oil LEAKING, took it to WALMART for oil change (THEY DIDNT CHANGE IT) took it back they said they did and only topped it off with 1 extra quart.... I get full synthetic, take VERY good care of my cars, so I took it to FIRESTONE for them to eval the oil leak and actually change the oil. They changed the oil but said they couldn't find a leak, 3 days later.... VERY LOUD KNOCKING NOISE! Like scary loud... I stopped driving it and due to unforeseen and crappy circumstances couldn't take it into the dealership for about 10months by which time the warranty was expired and they wouldn't even go in and look at it, they just told me it would be a $8000 repair all out of pocket.... I still owe about $7-8k on the lein as I am renting it from a credit union... So seeing as I haven't had a car because they wouldn't give me one while they "worked" on my car, I haven't been able to work, so I haven't been able to make payments.... so now I am behind about 6 months and it's sat now for 2 years in my garage, tires flat, battery dead, all because Walmart and Firestone couldn't do their job of checking for the OIL LEAK THAT I EVENTUALLY FOUND. (CRACKED PAN ON BOTTOM SIDE, WHICH MADE ALL THE OIL LEAK WHICH MADE THE #2 CYLINDER MISFIRE AND PROBABLY grind down the rods and lifters and everything else or made crap fall out and tear up engine...

Idk what to do I'm almost too scared to open myself to try to fix as I don't have very much car engine experience, and of course Walmart and Firestone giving me the run around at who's fault It is and who wants to pay the $8000 to get it fixed. And of course dodge/crysler/Jeep/ram don't even wanna touch it or help me! So it's AGAIN back in my garage and idfk WHAT to DO with IT.

If someone has any info that could help me or give me advice I would GREATLY appreciate it as I don't have the money to repair it, or even pay the late payments on it, so idk even know what to do. [email protected] -> (480) 370-7478
Thank You for your time! Austin Manstis

We have a 2019 Dodge Caravan. Check engine light came on, code, I think, was #2 misfire. Turned out a head had to be replaced (under warranty). That was March 15, 2022. That went O.K. Then warmer weather came and we tried the A/C, warm air. Thinking it was something they had done, I didn't even open the hood. I took it in April 6, 2022. It worked great till the head was replaced. I understood that if it was not something simple, to not do any work on it until they contacted me. They were supposed to call me when they found out the problem. After several hours we called them. They didn't know anything yet, but they would call me. Several more hours I called, they said it was done and it was ready for us to pick it up. Must have been something simple. Wrong! When we picked it up I expected them to hand me the keys. Instead they handed me a bill for $170.15. He gave me a song and dance about having to charge the system and then wait and see where the dye had came out to find the leak. I asked, "you put dye in the system?" He said they do that in the factory to aid mechanics to find leaks. When I asked why they didn't call me, He said they had to do it to finalize the troubleshooting. With my experience, a hose for the gauges can cover up a leaking core in a service valve, I proceeded to tell him how I started refrigeration school 40 years ago and worked with refrigeration till I retired 8 years ago and I'd always worked on my own stuff. And that the only reason I had brought it to them was because I figured it was something
they done or was a simple fix. He asked if I wanted them to take out the refrigerant and service port. WTF!! Are you kidding?? Two things my teacher in "cool school" did not approve of was; no line a tap valve on a system out the door and DO NOT use dye except as a last ditch effort to find a leak! PERIOD!! So, this brings me to two questions; Queston #1 Does Chrysler Group really add dye to A/C systems at the factory? Queston #2; Does the A/C system need to be opened in order to replace a head on the engine? Like disconnect the compressor to get it out of the way.

I have a 2018 ram promaster - its been a nightmare - it started running really ruff - cylinder misfiring the multiple cylinders - took it to the shop and they said it was bad heads - so they replaced both heads, plugs and coil packs
i have it back, now it runs ruff when driving 40 - 60 mph uphill jerking and lagging just like its missing again but no codes - even when just idling it jumps intermittingly - i took it back to the shop - i even showed they whats it doing - they said it was a bad new plug - i drove it 10 miles and started again jumping, lagging, hesitating - took it to another shop and they didnt know what the problem is.
I guess they are all lemons - amazon is having the same issues that is why they have alot of the rams at shops
can anyone help? is it the camshaft sensor? i ran injector cleaner and that didnt help

It just so happens l fell into that small percentage with that cylinder head problem. But because my VIN # is not listed, Dodge won't cover it. It sucks cause now l gotta pay out of my own pocket. How would they know what vehicles has that bad cylinder head by just a VIN #. Unless they knew about the problem beforehand. I was a Dodge person, but not now! I'M NOT BUYING ANOTHER DODGE OR CHRYSLER EVER AGAIN!
