Chrysler replacing cylinder heads on select Pentastar V6 powered models

After receiving hundreds of complaints about ticking, stalling, power loss and misfire conditions (thus check engine lights) in select vehicles powered by the popular 3.6L Pentastar V6, the Chrysler Group has begun replacing the cylinder heads on some problematic vehicles – with as many as 7,500 vehicle affected in the US.

According to Automotive News, the Chrysler Group believes that roughly one half of 1% of the vehicles sold in the US with the Pentastar V6 could have an unexplained cylinder head issue with the bank containing the #2 cylinder. This problem can reportedly cause a ticking noise that can escalate to misfire conditions that can cause stalling and a loss of power…although Chrysler points out that it does not render the vehicle inoperable.

It should be noted that this is not a recall but rather, owners of Pentastar powered Chrysler Group vehicles who are experiencing these issues can visit their local dealership where the cylinder heads will be replaced under warranty. The Chrysler Group began replacing the heads under warranty after a handful of complaints were filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration pertaining to the new Pentastar powered Jeep Wrangler SUVs. Unfortunately for Chrysler, this problem isn’t specific to the open aired Jeep as select Dodge Journey, Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan models have also been found to exhibit this problem. A variation of the 3.6L Pentastar V6 is also used in the Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Avenger, Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler 300, Chrysler 200 and the new Ram 1500 – although none of those vehicles have been mentioned in the statements involving the problematic Pentastar engines.

Chrysler first recognized this problem around six weeks ago, at which point they began manufacturing a replacement cylinder head that is “more robust” along with fitting all newly produced Pentastar engines with these beefier heads. Chrysler has not identified the exact cause of the problem or the specific issue with the cylinder head that is occurring but a company representative has explained that the problems are a culmination of a variety of factors including (but not limited to) the quality of gasoline and the driving situations. Based on that, it sounds like the Pentastar engines are experiencing early detonation that can cause a ticking noise and as time goes on – more problems could creep up due to the incorrect firing of the #2 cylinder. If someone was to put very low quality, low octane gasoline in their Pentastar vehicle and then run the vehicle hard in very hot conditions, there is a good chance that detonation could be the issue especially when the driver keeps running the same gasoline and driving hard. However, the Chrysler Group believes that the variables needed to experience these problems will prevent the problem from occurring in most Pentastar powered vehicles. That being said, running higher quality gasoline could prevent those Pentastar powered vehicles from running into the #2 cylinder issue.

The problem for Chrysler now is that cylinder heads are not something that a company typically builds in excess for mass replacements, like an oil filter or even a headlight lens. Because of that, there is a very high demand for these heartier cylinder heads which the company is having a hard time meeting which has forced some dealerships to hold onto customer vehicles while waiting for replacement parts – all the while having to pay for a rental car while the other is without their own vehicle.

In late July, a source stated that there were approximately 1,300 Chrysler Group vehicles sitting on dealership lots while they waited for the replacement cylinder heads with an average of 300 new vehicles arriving at dealerships each week. The average number of reported cylinder head issues has now increased to around 500 per week. Luckily, the Chrysler Group sent enough replacement cylinder heads to dealerships around the country to address some 3,000 vehicles but with as many as 7,500 vehicles affected around the country – those owners who have not experienced the problem thus far could be waiting for parts once they do.

I have a 2014 with a P0306 code saying #6 cyl misfire , so I had a Mechanic do a ck on it and found 60 psi on #6 cyl and 170 psi on other 2 cylinders in the same bank. Just called with vin# to local dealer was told it isn't in their "List " of pentastar v6 head problems !!!! I am on my 4th Dodge and I also am on my LAST Dodge !!

I have a 2012 chrysler 300. 3.6L
No lights on the dash and no codes to read, but the engine was oviously misfiring and losing power. The Techs at Lawless Chrysler Jeep said they could preform the cylinder head swap with out any codes to show chrysler. Instead they replaced all the spark plugs, saying that they were causing the misfire. A week later I get the car back, and at first it seemed normal, the problem has returned but it's not as bad as the first time, which I can't make sense of. I have a feeling the rough engine feel will get worse. Bringing it into the shop tomorrow. I'm hopefully.

2011 dodge durango 3.6 cyl.... 56,000miles Sept. 26th....took in for ticking noise from the engine plus engine light came on, Larson Dodge in Puyallup wa. were great. Used loaner car and with compression test, cylinder 6 had 40% leakage and all other cylinders ok. Exhaust valve and and seal burned and leaking. Replaced cyl head and fixed. Did receive 150,000 warranty from Chysler regarding this situation earlier this year.

I have a 2009 Dodge Journey SXT, my car was overheating so had it diagnosed. Had the water pump replaced and also the timing belt (80,000 miles on the car). Once out of the shop it was running rough and hesitating, shaking, and rattling and the check engine light would come on, and ding, and then went solid. The RPM's get up to 3000-4000 before shifting. It went back to the shop today(just 2 days after getting it back) and they told me that cylinder #1, #3 & #5 are all misfiring.
What would make it start misfiring after my repair?

We are a fleet customer of Chrysler. Our 2015 Dodge Grand Caravans developed ticking and head issues at approx 50,000 miles (less than a year in service), so the new style heads are not fixing the problem it seems. We are seeing the problem on 2011-2015 Dodge Grand Caravans with the 3.6L Pentastar engine. We won't be purchasing any more Dodge vans.

I just had the same issue with my VW Routan 2012 with 3.6L V6. I bought it used last may 2015 and now at 1/1/16 CEL came on. If i start the engine in a cold morning, the car shakes a bit more, and when you go and drive, i can hear scratchy sound from the engine. My wife drove this car last xmas of 2015 from LA to vegas and coming back, and the whole problem started. I took it to VW dealer and told them that i read this forum and it might be cyl head #2 tht is causing the problem and told them that a lot of chrysler, dodge and vw routsn owners had the same problem and they told me that it not true. But when they run the diagnostic they told me i was right. Now, my van is in VW dealer, sitting in their garage waiting for the part to come in for a week. They gave me a free rent a car (VW jetta 2015 with 2.0 engine). Quite not good compare to my 2012 jetta 2.5 SEcwith convinience package. I hope this will resolve all issue bout misfire and weak head gasket

We had to have both the front cylinder head and plastic manifold replaced under warranty in order to pass state emission inspection. I think they did some tweaking to ignition and fuel injector programing. We were getting 19.5 (87 octane) to 21.0 (91octane) mpg driving in town and getting 22.0 (87octane) to 24.5 (91 octane)on the Highway. Now if we get 16.5 to 17.5 mpg in town with 87 octane. We are lucky to get 20.5 to 21.5 mpg on the highway with any grade fuel. I paid to have plugs and ignition coils replaced at the time I had the servicing done. Anyone else having similar problems??

Peace

Purchased 300 S with the V/6 in May of 2016. A week or so later, noticed a humming noise at a cold start
and as the engine idles down to the running rpms' so does the humming noise until its gone. Took it in for
a look, dealer had to keep it over night to hear the noise in the morning. Said it was the water pump and the anti-freeze. Dealer said they replaced the pump and put in a different anti-freeze and it should be all set. Next morning when I started it up, exactly the same noise, nothing changed. Anyone else ???

Have a 2012 T & C, same story and 3 water pumps installed. There is a bulletin from Chrysler. Problem is the Idler Pulley, needs to be replaced. Never had the loud annoying sound since. There is a Technical service bulletin 07-002-15 posted 1/7/15. Hope this helps. Good luck!

I bought a 2011 Dodge Nitro 4.0 V6 . 58,000 miles
Misfire code cyl# 2 c after trying the simple plugs and a coil found the compression was low on cyl 2.
When pulling the valve cover noticed the exhaust rocker arm assembly had shifted and prematurely wore almost a 3/16 groove into the rockers haft tower assembly. Thus causing the rocker shaft to seize up because the side view of the rocker arm isn't round there is a flat molded spot on the rocker arm it has caused both exhaust valves to burn and warp. . Exhaust valve guides are now shot seats are shot and exhaust valves are trash oo.
Has anyone had the same issues and if so did the Warranty cover this complaint .

Anyone have a problem with warranty not covering this problem just because 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan was sold in Canada and brought back to US. I am being told it voids the warranty.
Also anyone have a phone number to Chrysler head warranty department?
Thanks

3.6L Pentastar V6. Head replaced at 48,000 miles (error P0304). A month ago, head replaced again at 96,000 miles along with lifters/rockers (error P0304). Now at 102,000 miles engine is acting up again with the same behavior (error P0305). This error code would indicate an issue with the right head and not the left. First time, they gave me a loaner car for a week and a half while they did the repair. Second time, no loaner car for 3 weeks while they did the repair. No idea how long it is going to take this time but I think I will try another dealership.

2013 jk unlimited with 39,800 miles, Cel came on, took it to the dealer, cylinder #2 misfire. After the head came off cylinder 2 and 4 had piston damage so a complete new engine was installed. Traded it in on a 2015, same Sahara unlimited, just in for service with 10,200 miles, next day check engine light, misfires on 2,4, and 6! Here we go again!! I'm done! I spend about $15,000 in making these things look killer but in the end the platform is problematic! They are underpowered and need regeared with the larger tires and after all the problems they had with the junk 3.8 engine before this it's just crazy. One of the ONLY things kileeping Chrysler out of bankruptcy is the JEEP! They need to do a complete recall!!!

At 119184 miles my oil was changed and that afternoon when I picked it up and the next morning on my way to work it started to tick haven't had any issues yet, I personally think that they used shitty conventional oil

You would think by 2015 Jeep would have this all figured out & a new head designed, tested, & put into production. But, no, not even close. The Mrs just got her 2015 JK back from the dealer with a bill of $1000.00 for labor. It is not even three years old & is her baby. Yes, another blown cylinder head.
If this happens again I will seriously look for an after market head.

Purchased 2013 jeep wrangle sport at Hill kelly, Pensacola, fl. NEW. AT 70,000 MILES, engine light came on with code for thermostat code. Soon after, the #2 cylinder misfired and zI replaced the #2 coil and 2,4,6 plugs which are covered and hard to replace without 1 hour labor charge. AT 72,ooo MILES catalytic converter, went out fortunately under extended federal warranty to 80,000 MILES. 2000.00$ repair. AT 100,000 MILES, #2 cylinder misfire, changed #2 coil and spark plug, At 120,000 MILES #2 cylinder misfire, coil replace and fuel injector replace did not fix 350$ repair. Took to hill Kelly, who diagnosed #2 cylinder leakage with 2500$ repair. Found chrysler had a x56 extended warranty on select 2011 to 2013 6 cyl but of course fca denied my reimbursement case because the vin # was not one for extended warranty. Really Jeep, same problem, vin not included, easy way out. Now engine light back on 3 days after #2 cal replace. Buyers Beware, never again go Toyota or Nissan, Shame, Shame, shame

I have a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan with less than 40,000 on it. My #6 cylinder head misfired and dealership saya it needs a new head. I was told by the dealership that I am number 3017 in line! They have a jeep that won't run with similar problem and has been setting on lot for over 6 weeks. Did somebody say class action lawsuit????

We use 3 Dodge Grand Caravans (2012, 2015 and 2016 currently) for our business. Before we bought these we had a 2008, 2009 and two 2010 models. We had never had any issues with these and ran all of them to 200,000 mileage plus. However, all three of our current Van's 2012, 2015 and 2016 have had to have rocker arms and cylinder repairs to the tune of $2100. and up EACH. When speaking with the dealership after so many issues of the same nature, I was told there was an engine change in 2011 and these issues are common with the new engine. This expense is killing us financially. Will never buy another Chrysler/Dodge product after this.

I have a 2013 Town & Country with 85k miles on it. Left cylinder head (closest to firewall ) started making clicking noise but nothing else so far. Fiat Chrysler says my vehicle is not covered by the warranty extension on the LH cylinder head. Does anyone know if later versions of the Pentastar have been documented with having this problem ???
Thanks

I have had problems with my 2012 Caravan RT for months. Halloween it just stoped dead in it's tracks after the dash light had a lightening storm. No brakes, couldn't unlock doors No lights. No steering... nothing. Took battery cables off and then put back on and it worked. Dealer said no reported problems but internet shows plenty. No I have had a code Cylinder 2 miss fire for months. I replaced spark plugs and coil.Still on. Now told it needs cylinder head. I saw this article and warranty extension won't help me. I have 151,075 miles. I'm sure I put on more than 1,000 since October when all this started. Chrysler will look into helping me but we all know how this will end. I am original owner and have not moved. If they knew about this why did they not contact me. I was told they don't do it. Why was it not a recall to be checked out?

Chrysler still tap dancing around these issues. My 2016 Dodge grand Caravan just got diagnosed with a number 2 misfiring And they want to replace the cylinder head and Valves

2 years ago, I had purchased a 2013 Town & Country for my son and his new family so that they would have a reliable vehicle to transport my grandbabies around town. Now the van can not even be used because of this cylinder misfire issue and we need answers. The Chrysler Corp people have denied the claim and they will not tell us why it would be denied. I dont know what to do. I am so frustrated and disappointed that I was given a total LEMON of a vehicle for so much money. I feel totally defeated and taken advantage of, as well as disgusted for the lack of information

They didn't even give you an explanation? I thought the 2013 was included under the extended warranty coverage from Chrysler? I am having the same issue with my 2015 T&C. I just purchased mine 2 months ago and now it is undrivable. Mechanic says it will be $4500 to fix and I owe $13k on it, paying monthly with nothing to drive. I have a large family that depends on this vehicle also. Chrysler should be held accoiuntable for continuing to put such a crappy engines in their cars.
