Audi takes aim at Mercedes Benz in new Super Bowl ad

Audi looks to redefine the look of a luxury car with the 2011 Audi A8 and with their new ad set to air during the Super Bowl XLV, Audi says “goodbye” to the items often associated with the usual aging luxury auto buyers, which happens to include a new Mercedes Benz.

You can view the new Audi A8 commercial without waiting for Super Bowl XLV by clicking here and as you will see, the commercial floats through a massive mansion as the narrator spins her own version of Margaret Wise Brown's popular book Goodnight Moon. Included in the items that Audi hopes to say goodbye to are tacky mink wraps, ornate equestrian lamps, silver candelabras, prissy large poodles, gold cufflinks, well-dressed mice in the ductwork, crystal chandeliers, and at the end – a new Mercedes Benz S-Class.

While I understand that Audi aims at the title of “new luxury”, it isn’t like Mercedes Benz is sitting on ten year old technology to keep their “old” customers happy and at the same time, many people who buy luxury cars are into things like tacky fur, poodles and massive chandeliers so it is interesting to see how well this new television ad campaign works out for Audi’s attempt to define new luxury.

Super Bowl XLV will be played on February 6, 2011 with kickoff planned for roughly 6:25pm. The game will run on the Fox Sports network with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman offering the commentary…hopefully of the Pittsburgh Steelers taking it to whichever NFC team backs into the other spot in the NFL’s championship game.
