Shelby President: The Fastest Street Legal 2020 Ford F-150 Hits The Streets

The 2020 Shelby Ford F-150 Super Snake will have 770-horsepower making it the country’s fastest street truck, says Shelby president Gary Patterson, with whom Torque News spoke yesterday.

The fastest street-legal Shelby F-150 pickup truck ever is now available. The Shelby Ford F-150 Super Snake, which debuted at SEMA this fall, has mind-blowing specs. The 770-horsepower super truck has a naturally-aspirated and supercharged V8 engine. During testing, the Super Snake went from 0-60 mph in 3.45 seconds and reached 100 mph in just over 8 seconds. That is insane speed for a pickup truck.

How is the 2020 Shelby F-150 Super Snake different from the 2020 Ford F-150?
The Shelby America team takes a factory-built Ford F-150 and modifies the engine, exterior and interior to create a custom-built pickup truck. There are many features, beyond the engine modifications, that define this truck as one-of-a-kind.

The Super Snake has specific modifications made by the Shelby team that includes a lowered suspension, a tuned pounding exhaust, custom wheels and modified braking system. Additionally the exterior features Shelby-specific design elements including Ram-air hood, front splitter, aggressive front bumper and grille and a tonneau cover. Plus there’s special Super Snake striping and badging. The Shelby F-150 Super Snake will be available in eight Ford factory paint colors. The interior adds Shelby signature elements as well including faux carbon fiber accents, Billet racing pedals, Shelby floor mats, custom leather and tinted windows. This entire truck is a head turner. It will for sure be an instant collector’s edition as only 250 of the 2020 model year trucks will be manufactured.

How the Shelby F-150 went from concept to reality
I asked Gary Patterson, president of Shelby American, some questions about the Super Snake and how it went from concept to reality. Here’s what he had to say:

Shelby F-150 Super Snake

Q: Is this truck really street legal?
A: The Shelby meets all government regulations to be registered and driven on the street.

Q: I understand that opinions of enthusiasts were included and that “some options that were not initially contemplated” were actually included. Can you tell me what those options were and how you surveyed or polled enthusiasts?

A: Initially, the vehicle was designed to be “bare bones” with a focus on minimum weight and maximum power. Feedback from consumers and dealers influenced us to start with a base Ford F-150 with more features, significantly enhance the suspension and the brakes, as well as make the interior more unique. In addition, we will also accept special orders through a dealer for a two-wheel drive version.

Q: How important is it to Shelby America to have your ear to the enthusiast groups? And what does that process entail?

A: As an enthusiast-driven company, we listen very closely to those individuals and groups. We do it by participating in key events worldwide where our team can speak directly to enthusiasts. We also connect through dealers and our partners at Tuscany, as well as feedback sent to us from consumers through Ford Motor Company.

The most important path to enthusiasts is through our club, Team Shelby. This group has about 80,000 members worldwide with directors managing their own regions and chapters. We conduct both formal and informal polls, conduct panel discussions, ask them for input via our closed social media groups and have regular telcons with them. Plus, we have an annual event in Las Vegas each spring where they gather from around the globe. During that event in particular, we actively solicit their input on products, innovations, programs, quality, etc.

Q: The modifications needed come from the dealer level and not from the Ford factory, right?

A: All of the modifications for the new Shelby F-150 Super Snake Sport trucks sold in North America will be made by our team at Shelby America in Las Vegas. Select mod shops worldwide can secure a package from us to install locally.

Q: What is your partnership with Ford like regarding these customized F-150s?

A: The Ford vehicles are standard as Shelby makes the modifications. However, we review our programs with the key Ford truck team on a quarterly basis. That is when we collaborate on projects, discuss content and prepare for the next trends, etc.

How much does the Super Snake cost?
MSRP for a naturally aspirated V8 Shelby Super Snake starts at $86,085. The even-more-powerful 770-horsepower supercharged V8 starts at $93,385. Both trucks come with a 3 year/36,000 mile-warranty. The Shelby F-150 Super Snake Sport will be available through select Shelby dealers across North America starting in early spring of 2020.
