If you been driving your Toyota Prius around and begun to notice it is not using the EV mode like it used to, do not worry, you are not alone. Many Prius drivers suffer the same thing and are not aware of what is happening to their car.

I want to cover what is happening to your sweet little hybrid and what you can do about it.

What Is Happening To My Prius When EV Mode Diminishes?
There are billions of drivers on the road, and a vast majority of drivers have almost no clue how their vehicle operates. Many people rely on professionals to understand what is going on with their car when it breaks.

What is worse is that sometimes the understanding between professionals and consumers is not all that great. The consumer can often get caught up thinking that the $3000 in needed repairs are to rip them off. Sadly, that does happen, but the thing that consumers do not understand is our modern vehicles' complexity.

This misunderstanding can lead to the consumer feeling robbed and the shop repairing the car to get a lousy review, maybe. Why am I saying all of this? Because right now, I am that professional, and I am going to tell hybrid owners again why their hybrid battery dies.

I have had people tell me that I am trying to sell them on something. I have nothing to gain from sharing this information other than helping Prius and other hybrid owners get the most from their cars. If you want to know why batteries are failing, read this article here not to repeat myself.

This article points out that you understand that your hybrid battery is showing its age, and you need to pay attention to it. The EV mode becomes diminished because the battery capacity is becoming reduced. That means you do not have the same amount of energy as you once did when the battery was new. It is pure science.

What Can Be Done To Restore EV Mode On My Prius?
For my readers who are out there, you know that I have spoken about the Prolong System's utilization for quite some time now. To show that I am not biased on that product alone, I will tell you that you can use others out there.

My personal opinion is that the Prolong System is one of the most user-friendly systems you can buy. I also feel that it is the safest to use for those who are not quite sure what they are doing. There are other systems out there as well too. The Maxx Volts system is also a product that I have had heard good reviews on as well. The EV-Peak CQ3 is also a hobbyist's dream tool; it can charge and discharge the batteries well. It can do Li-Po and NiCAD cells, too, which is a neat feature.

No matter what you choose, each device will have a learning curve, and some will be easier to use than others. The point is it is not the equipment necessarily but the process in what you are doing to restore the battery.

Conclusion
If you are experiencing an EV mode that is less than satisfactory, lower fuel econ, or loss of power, you need to take care of that hybrid battery first. Periodic battery reconditioning will restore all of that and breathe new life into your hybrid. It will also cost you far less than doing a new battery.

The choice is yours, but my Gen 2 Prius still gets 46mpg and has an excellent battery, all with periodic maintenance on the hybrid battery. Thank you all for reading. I hope you get a great start to your weekend here soon and stay safe.

If you have a question about batteries or anything, drop me a line or Facebook or Twitter. I am happy to help a fellow hybrid owner get the most out of their vehicle.

Have you checked the 12v battery and 12v systems?
If your engine is working harder your ev battery is not up to par.
Prius charging states is 40%-80% as low and full bar. Computer knows how much to charge for the best of the car battery life. In all battery, full charge is the most damaging state except for 12v acid battery. Same thing with your Li battery . But NiMh has less problem with liquid solid interface like in Li. That's why NiMh has 15 years warranty nut Li only 10 y on hybrid toyota in UK / Ireland with mild weather
