Faulty Back Up Cameras Forcing Recall of 160,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees, Grand Cherokee Ls, Wagoneers and Grand Wagoneers

160,000 of Jeep's most promising, recent models are being recalled because the back up cameras aren't working properly.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is alerting more than 160,000 Jeep owners about a recall that will be happening in October. The recall affects the 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Grand Cherokee L, as well as the 2022- 2023 Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Wagoneer vehicles. A problem with the backup camera software means that the rearview image does not always display when the vehicle is in reverse.  The problem could increase the chances of being in a crash. The image problem also violates a federal rule. The recall is NHTSA Campaign Number 23V577000.

  • 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L - 59,508
  • 2022-2024 Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer - 43,041
  • Total Number Affected 162,713

What is Causing the Recall

The Central Vision Park Assist module (CVPAM) software may prevent the rearview image from displaying when the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."

A rearview image that does not display while in reverse decreases the driver's visibility of the rear view, increasing the risk of injury or crash.

How Fiat Chrysler Will Fix the Problem

FCA, which is now owned by Stellantis, will send letters to owners starting on October 3, 2023. Owners will have to return to their dealership where technicians will update the Central Vision Park Assist Module software, free of charge. In the meantime, owners who are worried may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 56A.
