The SUV-Alternative Subaru Outback Just Made It All The Way Back To First Place

The 2023 Subaru Outback makes an impressive comeback. Check out the results from May and where the midsize SUV is now in Subaru of America's all-wheel-drive lineup.

The Subaru Outback has been the sales leader for Subaru of America until last year, when it lost the title. After that, the hot Crosstrek subcompact SUV became the best-selling model in the lineup, but the Outback midsize SUV is back.

Things are improving for Subaru of America (SOA) as the automaker did it again in May with another sales increase, and the Outback was a significant reason. SOA reported a sales increase last month, continuing the upward trend in 2023. Subaru says sales were up 28.2 percent in May, the tenth consecutive month of month-over-month sales increases for the Camden, N.J. automaker.

As a result, the Outback is now the top performer in the lineup. Outback is now up 1.5 percent in the first five months of 2023. Outback leads all other models with 65,178 midsize SUVs delivered to customers in 2023. The Crosstrek slips to second place with 59,374 total sales throughout the first five months.

An updated study from Consumer Reports (by subscription) says the 2023 Subaru Outback now ranks among the seven best midsize SUVs for comfort and roominess inside to carry your family and belongings.

CR says, "Yes, it looks more like a raised wagon than an SUV, yet the Outback is a formidable competitor, thanks to its solid feel and very comfortable ride that outshines even some luxury SUVs. For 2024, the midsize SUV gets further improvements like upgraded LED dome and cargo lights; a 360-degree heated steering wheel is now standard on more trim levels, including Wilderness and other Onyx Edition trim upgrades.
