Subaru's New Crosstrek Hybrid - Why They Sell So Few Of The Fuel-Stingy Models

Subaru doesn't release how many 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid models they sell, but we found out. See how few they sell to U.S.customers.

The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Plug-in Hybrid is fuel efficient and an excellent all-weather, all-terrain subcompact SUV. Why doesn't Subaru sell more of the fuel-stingy models to U.S. customers? Subaru of America doesn't release how many new Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid models they sell in the U.S., but we found out.

A new report from Kelley Blue Book (KBB) reveals how many 2022 Crosstrek Hybrid trim levels Subaru of America sold this year, and the numbers are small. The KBB report says Subaru has only sold 1,731 Crosstrek hybrid models in the U.S. through the first nine months of 2022. In 2021, Subaru of America only sold 2,155 Crosstrek Hybrids to its U.S. customers.

What is the Crosstrek hybrid fuel mileage?

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek hybrid gets better fuel mileage than the gas models. In Consumer Reports testing, the plug-in Hybrid gets 38/45 city/highway MPGe and 42 combined MPGe. The EPA says the Crosstrek Hybrid gets an estimated 90 MPGe combined city/highway using electric and gas and 35 mpg combined city/highway using regular gas.

The standard Crosstrek uses direct injection on its new 2.5-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine and gets 27/34 city/highway mpg and 29 combined mpg. The 2.0-liter engine gets 28/33 mpg and 30 combined mpg with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) automatic.

2023 Subaru Crosstrek Plug-in Hybrid

The Crosstrek Plug-in Hybrid is fuel-efficient, so why doesn't Subaru sell more new models? The Crosstrek Hybrid is not readily available in all states. The 2023 Crosstrek Plug-In Hybrid sells in every state, but customers who want the hybrid model will have to wait in most U.S. states when ordering.

You won't find any sitting in dealer showrooms unless you live in California or the Northeast coast states. Instead of waiting, most customers opt for the standard model. We checked Subaru retailers near Denver, Colorado and the closest retailer offering a Crosstrek Hybrid is in Salt Lake City, Utah.

What is the price of the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid?

The 2023 Crosstrek Hybrid has a starting price of $38,070, which includes destination and delivery fees ($1,225).

2023 Crosstrek Plug-In Hybrid features

Crosstrek Hybrid adds the features of the Limited with unique exterior and interior trim and offers one option package (moonroof, navigation, Harman Kardon sound, and heated steering wheel - $2,500). The Crosstrek Hybrid includes Starlink Connected Services, including remote climate control and a remote battery charging timer in the Hybrid's free 10-year subscription to the Starlink Safety and Security Plus package.

Why doesn't Subaru make the Hybrid trim level readily available in all 50 states? The Crosstrek subcompact SUV is now Subaru of America's number-one-selling model in the lineup. They don't have a huge demand right now because it's priced at $12,050 more than the top-selling 2023 Crosstrek Premium trim.

Even though the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek plug-in hybrid is ranked among the eight best new hybrid cars under $40,000 by Kelly Blue Book, it's not readily available for many U.S. customers. Look for Subaru of America to begin offering more Crosstrek Hybrid and other models in the next five years, and the price may decrease. Stay tuned.

I have built and ordered the Crosstrek Premium trim and currently I am waiting for delivery. Originally, I wanted the hybrid model but the additional $10K+ and added wait time discouraged me.

As a nature and landscape photographer, I rely on my Subaru Outback to get me to out of the beaten path places and back. I've been looking at getting the Crosstrek hybrid to reduce my fuel consumption, but was told it is practically impossible here in the MidWest. I've tried driving a Toyota RAV4 hybrid, but it turned out to be more suitable for maintaining traction in big city inclement weather than tackling mud and snow in the boondocks. I could use a Subaru hybrid now, not in 5 years.

It's not selling because it's a poor concept. 17 miles of all electric is very poor. The competition gets 30-40+ which means those vehicles will handle the daily commute of most Americans without using gas at all. The 35 mpg (gas only) provided by the Crosstreck is also sub-standard. The competition gets well over 40 mpg. There are things to like about this car, efficiency is not one of them.
