Subaru released a Consumer Reports ranking of its most popular models, the 2023 Crosstrek, 2022 Outback, and 2023 Forester. Check out which SUV gets the highest scores.

Which Subaru SUV is the highest in Consumer Reports rankings for new car shoppers? Subaru of America released a new report showing which SUV is ranked best; The 2022 Crosstrek, the 2022 Outback, or the 2022 Forester.

Forester is the highest-ranked compact SUV

The highest-rated compact SUV with the best score of any Subaru model is the 2022 Subaru Forester. Since the 2023 models are a carry-over with no changes, the score for the 2023 model year is the same.

2023 Subaru Forester

Consumer Reports gives Forester an overall score of 90, and its the number one ranked compact SUV of twenty-five models in its category. It outscores the Hyundai Tucson (89 points), Toyota RAV4 Prime (88), Honda CR-V (84), Ford Bronco Sport (82), and Mazda CX-5 (82).

CR says the Forester scores high for its fuel economy, roomy interior, excellent visibility, and easy controls. Forester gets a 90/100 for the road test, 4/5 in predicted reliability, and 4/5 in predicted owner satisfaction. The Forester’s low score was for engine noise.

All 2023 Forester trim levels increased by $550 in price, including destination and delivery. Forester comes in six trim levels; The Base Forester starts at $27,620, Premium ($30,620), Sport ($32,190), Limited ($34,300), Wilderness ($35,245), and Touring ($37,720). Pricing includes dealer fees ($1,225).

Consumer Reports ranks the Forester as one of the ten most fuel-stingy non-hybrid SUVs. The 2023 Forester gets an EPA-estimated 26/33 city/highway mpg and 29 combined mpg. The EPA rated the new Forester Wilderness with an estimated 25/28 city/highway mpg and 26 combined mpg.

The highest-rated subcompact SUV with the second-best score of any Subaru model is the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek. Since the 2023 models are a carry-over with no changes, the score for the 2023 model year is the same.

Consumer Reports gives the Crosstrek an overall score of 86, and it’s the number one ranked subcompact SUV of fifteen models in its category. It outscores the Nissan Rogue Sport (77 points), Chevrolet Trail Blazer (76), Mazda CX-30 (70), Mazda CX-3 (70), and Hyundai Kona (66).

CR says the Crosstrek scores high for its ride quality, fuel economy, easy-to-use controls, and braking. Crosstrek gets 87/100 for the road test, 5/5 in predicted reliability, and 4/5 in predicted owner satisfaction. The Crosstrek’s low score was for engine noise, and the seats are short on lower back support. The hybrid provides only brief electric propulsion, and the battery robs cargo space.

All Crosstrek trim levels get a $600 price increase. The 2023 Crosstrek now comes in six trim levels for U.S. customers. The base trim is priced from $24,870, Premium, ($26,020), Special Edition ($27,970), Sport ($29,220), Limited ($30,720) and Crosstrek Hybrid ($38.070). Prices include destination and delivery fees ($1,225).

CR rates Crosstrek 29 overall and 20/39 city/highway. The EPA estimated mpg is 27/34 city/highway mpg and 29 combined mpg on its new 2.5-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine. The 2.0-liter engine gets 28/33 mpg and 30 combined mpg with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) automatic.

Outback is the highest-ranked midsize SUV

The highest-rated midsize SUV with the third-best score of any Subaru model is the 2022 Subaru Outback. The 2023 Outback has been remodeled and has not been rated by CR.

Consumer Reports gives the Outback an overall score of 85, and it’s the number one ranked midsize SUV of eleven models in its category. It outscores the Toyota Venza (83 points), Chevrolet Blazer (82), Nissan Murano (81), Ford Edge (80), and Honda Passport (75).

CR says the Outback scores high for its ride quality, transmission, seat comfort, driving position, integrated crossbars, and visibility. Outback gets a 91/100 for the road test, 3/5 in predicted reliability, and 4/5 in predicted owner satisfaction. The Outback’s low score was its controls and slow-responding infotainment screen.

What is the price of the 2023 Subaru Outback?

The 2023 Outback now comes in nine trim levels for U.S. customers; the base trim is priced from $29,620, Premium ($31,920), new Onyx Edition with a 2.5 liter engine ($34,720), Limited ($36,520), Touring ($41,070), Outback Wilderness ($39,670), Onyx Edition XT ($39,820), Limited XT ($40,920), and Touring XT ($43,520). Pricing includes $1,225 destination and delivery fees.

What is the 2023 Outback fuel mileage?

CR rates Outback 24 overall and 16/32 city/highway. The EPA fuel mileage rating of the 2023 Outback XT 2.4-liter turbo is 22/29 city/highway mpg and 25 combined mpg. The estimated fuel economy of the standard 2.5-liter engine is 26/32 mpg city/highway and 28 combined mpg.

The EPA says the 2023 Outback Wilderness gets an estimated 21/26 city/highway mpg and 23 combined mpg.

The 2023 Forester is Subaru’s highest-rated model, the 2023 Crosstrek is second, and the 2022 Subaru Outback is third best. According to Consumer Reports, all three models score best in class and are the highest-scoring models. Consumer Reports does not endorse products or services.

Does the information center have a better response to voice navigation commands and better navigation to established address or stores? This is the only issue I have with my 2018 Outback and the navigation unit has been been changed twice, with no Improvement. I have read other reviews still say it’s an issue.
