Honda Civic, CR-V Oil Dilution Problem, What You Should Do Now

If you own a Honda Civic or CR-V with a 1.5-liter turbo engine you could have problems. Here’s what you can do.

You’ve heard about the Honda Civic and CR-V oil dissolution problem, not what should you do? If you own a 2017 to 2018 Honda CR-V or a 2016 to 2018 Honda Civic with a 1.5-liter turbo engine, you will now have an extended warranty covering your vehicle for another year. If you experience problems, Honda says you will be covered, but only for certain parts.

Complaints from owners say they can smell raw fuel inside the cabin and outside the vehicle. This is due to gasoline seeping into the engine oil. The problem has raised concerns about the durability of the 1.5-liter turbo engine and about the vehicles potentially stalling, especially in cold weather. But problems in summer months have also been reported in California and Texas according to Consumer Reports. Oil dilution could even result in catastrophic engine failure.

If you suspect you have a problem in your Civic or CR-V, check your oil level. If it’s above the full mark, there’s likely fuel seeping into your oil and it could ruin your engine. Apparently driving your vehicle short distances can exacerbate the problem.

Honda’s solution

Honda is now providing you an extra year of coverage, six years from the time of purchase, with no mileage limits. But it only covers some powertrain components; the camshaft, rocker-arm assemblies, and spark plugs. Honda says oil dilution in the Civic and CR-V 1.5-liter engine is rare and that the company is “acting to provide peace of mind for its customers.”

Honda has also issued an update to these Civic/CR-V models and is notifying owners in cold-weather states to bring their vehicles to dealers for repairs. WardsAuto reports, Honda spokesman Chris Martin says updates involve transmission and engine software changes that allow the engine to warm up quicker, reducing the possibility of un-evaporated fuel collecting in the engine oil early in the drive cycle. Ignition timing, CVT control, and air-conditioning operations are modified to help the engine warm up and retain heat.

Some owners are reporting Honda dealers are telling customers engine oil contamination is considered normal and are being denied warranty coverage for the necessary repairs and are being forced to pay for replacement engines and repairs out-of-pocket.

What should owners do?

If you smell gas fumes in your Honda Civic or CR-V and your oil level is above the full mark, you need to go to your local Honda dealer and report the problem. Make sure you document everything by getting a detailed repair invoice and especially get the service advisor to put “no fix is available” if they tell you repairing your vehicle is not needed. Keep bringing your vehicle back if the problem keeps occurring. Under lemon laws, you have rights to seek recourse, even if they cannot properly fix the problem or maintain they still do not have have a solution.

No recall has been ordered because the problem isn’t considered a safety issue according to Honda. Because of the widespread problem, the law firm of Sauder Schelkopf LLC is investigating a class action lawsuit on behalf of owners of Honda CR-V and Honda Civic vehicles (model years 2016, 2017 and 2018) that are prone to engine oil contamination. If you have purchased a 2019 Honda Civic or CR-V all 2019’ models are being updated at the factory.

I own a 2016 crv and I have been quite sick, I have been spitting blood, and as soon as I enter the vehicle about 5 min. after my eyes burn, throat, lungs, stomach, liver, kidneys are the first to hurt then the rest comes, and if I drive over 1 hour my hands and arms start burning and turn red and by the time I get home my skin smells so much gasoline that I have to wash my hands to my elbows at least 5 times with lemon oil to get rid of the gasoline smell and my clothes have to stay outside for 3 days to rid smell, even my dog got sick 3 times in the car and he started to throw up 13 times a day for 3 days and would not eat or drink, he weights 17 lbs an in a month he lost 5 pounds the vet said his kidneys and liver were affected I took him to a kennel in the mountains for a month and he never got back into that car, he seems to be doing well for now, but I am not, it affected my immune system and when I go outside I can no longer combat pollution, I start to absorb all the pollution in the air because my resistance is now loo low, if I was not a health coach and did not detox etc. I would probably have cancer or be dead, also people were telling me it was not my kidneys that hurt but the seats were not comfortable not true, since after I get out of the car and breathe in oxygen my kidneys would stop hurting and if it were the seats the pain would still be there when I get out of the car, after a year the symptoms no longer went away I have very painful kidneys and the pain no longer goes away,

Honda is blowing smoke. The 3 year warranty they are giving everyone is nothing,. to the best of my knowledge overhead cam engines does not have rocker arms. the valves are opened by the cam lobes as the cam rotates. Cam bearing hardly every cause problems, besides once the motor oil has been deluted to the point ti can no longer pervide lubercation. your main crankshaft and rod bearings spin and completely locking the engine up tight. friction will kill an engine real fast and motor oil is your main defense against friction.one more thing, the gas going into oil pan is a safety hazard. IF you don't believe that scrape that oil pan on a concrete curb, one spark is all tt needs and it blows the oil pan completely off and that I witnessed

I have a 2019 CRV Touring. Two winters now I have had the issue of the oil/gas mixing and have the smell in my car. Seems as soon as the weather gets cold - -30 this last week - is when I notice it. Thought it was the antifreeze but they said it was okay. Was told that it's normal to have some gas mix with the oil because of the short trips I make in the city - Manitoba. Ridiculous. Now I read it shouldn't happen. Maybe Honda needs to make sure their sales reps know the truth!!

2017 crv ex. Within 4 to 5000 miles, the stick reads at one half inch above the maximum level. When we open the garage door, there is a strong smell of gasoline. When i wipe the dipstick after checking the oil, the paper towel smells like gas. All the updates and air conditioning module "fix" has had no affect on the problem. Just waiting for a catastrophic engine failure. It is not if it's when!

So what does this mean for the consumers who were unlucky and were deceived by Honda. I know I will never purchase another Honda.

I also will never buy another Honda product.
And I have had 12. 9 Hondas and 3 Acuras.
You might be OK, depending on how bad the problem is in your vehicle. I traded mine in for a Hyundai Kona so I wouldn't be stuck when the engine disintegrated from lack of proper lubrication. Couldn't be happier with the Kona.
They extended the warranty to 6 years. But, from what I have read online, they're not doing anything to fix the problem and they keep denying that there even is a problem.
If you planned on keeping it for more than 6 years, you might want to think about trading it in or selling it before the warranty expires.

It’s almost as if moving some of their manufacturing operations to the US turned them into another Chrysler. Poor quality control, awful build quality, and now they are playing games instead of making things right. If they came out immediately, admitted the problem, and fixed it, it would cost them in the short term. But, by denying the problem and issuing band-aid fixes, if any, they’re going to pay dearly in the long run by losing loyal customers.
The cars were better when they were built in Japan. I could tell without looking where my cars were built just by driving for a few days. Different culture than the US. Japan has a culture with pride in workmanship and integrity. The US used to, but not anymore. Now, everything takes a back seat to the leftist agenda.

What amazes me is the number of Honda crvs I see in town.. Everywhere I look.... people have one. Including me. Kind of worried. Mine is a 2019 and I've had it in twice already. Whenever it gets really cold.... Manitoba...it happens.

I worked on direct injection engine development for a competing car company. Oil dilution is an inherent problem with direct injection and gets worse as the fuel injectors age and provide a less uniform spray. Also happens in Diesel engines for the same reason. Honda should really be replacing or at least cleaning injectors on problem engines- probably too expensive a fix to volunteer to do. My civic is showing the problem. At the very least you should change the oil frequently if you see the engine “gaining” oil. Also should go to the next higher viscosity grade to avoid damage. The 10,000 mile oil change is just absurd under these circumstances.

Bought my daughter a 2020 CRV EXL, severe gasoline dilution noted at first oil change and the two following oil changes. Honda says it is normal. Due to time constraints I traded that POS in on a CRV Hybrid. Should have taken my time and traded it in on a Toyota. Have had Honda’s since 1985, never again though. They have lost a loyal customer.

Well, got some shocking news just now. Took my 2019 CRV in for a recall for the fuel pump. I've had it in the shop twice already for the gas/oil issue in the winter time. Mentioned that the turbo or something sounds noisy. My friend has the exact same car and hers is quiet. Just got a call.....they are ordering a new engine. That's right. You read it right.
I'm just in shock. Sure hope this one is quieter. So keep vigilant people. Complain when you hear noises.

I have a 2018 Honda Civic Touring with less than 30k miles. I have changed the oil when prompted by the car, three times now at approximately every 8k miles. The fourth oil change was prompted at only 4K miles. I noticed the oil was very dark and the reservoir was over full. Now my car is showing multiple errors with the breaking system and transmission. It seems to drive okay, but I am worried.

Having issues with my Honda Civic Hatchback 2018 and they are saying it will cost us 14,000.00 to fix the engine??? And that they won’t cover it under the warranty. The engine has sludge and we did our own oil changes with no records of it. Receipts of oil not kept. We have a bumper to bumper warranty and we were taking it in to do the recall and it was pulling all the codes when I took it in. I need someone to tell me how to fight this!!!! Help!!!
