Insurance Navy found the four cheapest new vehicles to insure this year are the Honda CR-V LX, Jeep Wrangler JL Sport, Subaru Crosstrek, and the Subaru Forester.

The Honda CR-V LX costs the least at $1,574 annually, followed by the Jeep Wrangler JL Sport ($1,585), Subaru Crosstrek ($1,606), and Subaru Forester ($1,613).

"We found that small-sized SUVs and minivans are vehicles with some of the lowest auto insurance rates," says Insurance Navy CEO Fadi Sneineh. "These cars are often built for passengers and families, so they have to go above and beyond with their safety features. Car insurance companies like ourselves love these cars for that reason."

The more likely the vehicle is to be involved in an accident, the more it costs to fix, and it is the primary factor in auto insurance base rates. Companies also consider crash test ratings, the size of the engine and horsepower, and safety features.

Subaru Forester and Crosstrek safety tech

Insurance companies like Crosstrek and Forester trim levels with the latest safety features. Subaru EyeSight features automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitors with rear cross-traffic alerts, and adaptive cruise control. Some Forester trims also come with the new DriverFocus technology that alerts the driver if it senses drowsiness.

The Crosstrek and Forester insurance rates are the lowest because of the two model's top safety scores. The 2022 Forester recently earned the highest Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek earned the Top Safety Pick award in 2022.

To qualify for the highest Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS in 2022, vehicles must earn "Good" ratings in six crashworthiness evaluations, including the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests.

Vehicles must also be available with a front crash prevention system that earns advanced or superior ratings in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations. For the higher-tier Top Safety Pick+ award, good or acceptable headlights must be standard across all trim levels.
