Three Nissan GT-R race cars will compete in the 2016 Nurburgring 24-hour. Do you remember the record set by a GT-R at the Nordschleife?

The Nissan GT-R is no stranger to the Nurburgring Nordschleife, and it’s a record holder at the famous German track. A GT-R set a 7 minute 8.679 second lap of the Nordschleife to record the fastest ever volume production car lap in 2013. Scroll down to watch as German NISMO legend Michael Krumm sets the record.

3 Nissan GT-Rs will compete

The Nurburgring 24-hour race is grueling and three Nissan GT-Rs are set to attack this weekend. The first is the #35 Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 entry for Nissan GT Academy Team RJN. The Ordonez and Krumm Nissan race car will be driven by Japanese Super GT racer Kazuki Hoshino and British Blancpain Endurance Series champion Alex Buncombe.

Nissan’s factory entry will be managed by three-time race winners Zakspeed. The #48 GT-R will be driven by GT Academy winners Florian Strauss and Marc Gassner plus Dutch veteran Tom Coronel. The third GT-R comes from Schulze Motorsports which will be driven by a fourth GT Academy winner, Frenchman Jordan Tresson, and will run in the SP 8T class.

The toughest race in the world

Last year, the Ordonez and Krumm Nissan GT-R NISMO GT-3 entry finished in the top ten. Ordonez said. "This is the most challenging, most exciting and toughest race in the world. Last year's top 10 was an amazing result for NISMO, and I have a dream lineup of teammates again. Hopefully we can have a dream race like last year. We stayed out of trouble and were mistake free. We'll be fighting hard again and plan to get a fantastic result. In the qualifying race in April we completed a lot of miles and everybody had the chance to sample dry, damp and wet conditions. We finished 10th overall and everyone was very happy to now be locked in for the top 30 qualifying session for the Nurburgring 24 Hours."

The Nissan factory GT-R run by Zakspeed is also locked into the 40-minute top 30 qualifying session, which will be held Friday evening starting at 7:50 p.m. local time. The race begins at 3:30 pm on Saturday afternoon, May 28 and concludes Sunday May 29. Three Nissan GT-Rs are set to attack the grueling Nurburgring 24-hour race this weekend. Stay tuned.
