Some New Honda CR-V Hybrid Owners Report Lower Than Expected MPG

We polled Honda CR-V hybrid owners to see what they are getting for fuel efficiency. The majority fall into one small range.

The all-new Honda CR-V Hybrid was a little late to the green crossover party but welcomed nonetheless. Owners of the CR-V Hybrid seem thrilled overall with their purchase, and the Facebook CR-V Hybrid Owners’ Club posts are almost entirely positive. We conducted a poll within the club to ask owners what MPG they are getting. Most of the answers fall within a tight range.

We asked what the combined average was. The CR-V Hybrid, like all modern automobiles, can record that information for the owner in the dash display, or the owner can measure their MPG using miles traveled and gallons consumed. We asked the owners to tell us how they measured their MPG since we saw a discrepancy between the two values when we tested the CR-V Hybrid.

What Fuel Efficiency Do Honda CR-V Owners Report?
The majority of owners that responded to our poll reported that they have observed “less than 36 MPG.” Almost exactly half of the group chose this range. This is less than good news. This falls short of the EPA-estimated 38 MPG combined rating for this new vehicle. About 10% of the respondents reported that their mileage was “28-30 MPG.” That was a range that our original poll didn’t include. It was a range added by owners. Facebook polls allow members to add in poll categories.

On the other hand, about 20% of those who responded reported a fuel efficiency of 40 MPG or greater, which is higher than the EPA estimate. We should note that some of the responders mentioned in the comments that they are located in the UK, where a gallon is larger than a U.S. standard gallon volume. Since that can only help the miles per gallon observed, we feel it does not invalidate our headline or theme of the story.

What Was Our CR-V Hybrid MPG Result?
In our own testing of the Honda CR-V Hybrid, we observed 36 MPG using the in-vehicle dash display. However, by calculating the miles driven (using the vehicle’s odometer) by gallons we put into the vehicle, our fuel economy was 39 MPG. Here is a report on that observation.

Do EPA Estimates Match Real World Results?
Typically, Torque News observes a very close correlation to test MPG to the EPA combined estimated number. In many cases, we exceed the EPA estimate. Our editor, Patrick Rall, once filled a Prius with a bunch of buddies and coolers and made an epic road trip to see Guns N’ Roses. Patrick drives either his Challenger Hellcat or Hemi-powered pickup as his daily drivers. To nobody’s surprise, his Prius MPG exceeded the EPA average. Even those of us with a heavy foot almost never see a combined MPG below the EPA estimate.

Draw whatever conclusion you like from our poll or our test results. The CR-V operated close to its estimated fuel economy for almost all owners and in our testing. Yet, the largest group reporting 36 MPG or less still has some meaning. What is your opinion on the matter? Feel free to reply in the comments below.

My Honda CRV HYBRID TOURING is not exceeding 31 mpg and keeps going down with the cold weather regardless of where and how long I drive it , I just got it end of December 2021 . The mile range was 600 at full gas tank when I drove it out from
The dealer and now it’s down to 450 on a full tank . I am very disappointed and this is false advertising about the better mileage

Purchased a 2022 CRV Hybrid Touring a couple of months ago. The car has 3600 miles, mostly highway. MPG: 27 - 32. I am very easy on this vehicle, never drove it over 70 mph, no harsh acceleration. I am so disappointed, the main reason I switched from Toyota to Honda was the better gas mileage advertised by Honda. The question is who is assuming or who will be held responsible for the false advertising? Maybe the gasoline evaporates from the tank since it does not have a cap (I am being sarcastic).

Well it sounds like alot of people are having the same issue with the 2022 Honda Hybrid I'm having! I'm not happy at all with my gas mileage!! I have averaged about 27-28.6. That's far from what it says on the sticker!! No being able to use the EV mode much either! I have never had a Honda but my Fiancee has 2 of them and loves the low gas mielage so I thought I would get one man was that a mistake! VERY DISSAPOINTED CUSTOMER!!!

I am also very disappointed in my Honda crv hybrid mileage! I'm even more disappointed after reading these comments and realizing so many of us have been basically lied to. No more Honda's for this family. And I will be contacting the corporation.

I am also disappointed with my Honda Hybrid. After a year, my fuel economy has been dropping and dropping. I am now down from almost 37 at purchase to 31.4.
I know it's winter and I drive on highways, but I keep it in econ mode (the leaf) almost all of the time. This is not the best for acceleration on highways though, which is my daily commute. They say not to put the pedal to the metal, but in that mode I feel like I have to in order to stay at 70 mpg. I have watched the range do better when I coast. Sometimes I coast just to try to gain a bit of mpg. Nothing seems to be working. I am very disappointed and am glad it is a leased vehicle, because I am sure something better will come along when we are ready to turn it in. We thought about buying it at the end of the lease, but I think they need to do a better job. I don't even know why they have the other modes. The EC mode only lasts five minutes. The econ off and Sport modes use more gas, although the engine actually seems like it's working less hard. The econ mode should function as advertised, so it is worth the purchase. My old Mazda got 36mpg just on gasoline. So disappointed! And it cracks me up that we can't use heat, or AC if we want good mileage. I didn't have to go back to horse and buggy concepts with my Mazda and still got good mpg. Ridiculous!

I purchased a Honda CR-V in 2021 and I deeply regret the decision . I had a Toyota Prius previously . The gas mileage on the Honda is at about 32 mpg which is far below what was advertised . Please someone do a class action suit ! I’m stuck in a three year lease . I want my Toyota back! Not to mention the media system in the Honda is terrible!

Both my '20 & '22 CRV Hybrids get 36-38 mpg. Just depends how you drive. I keep them in ECON and use the paddles, drive with a light foot, and let the car coast a lot.

We bought our 2022 CR-V Hybrid with great promise of long range and great gas mileage. Neither has proven to be true and we are extremely disappointed in our CR-V. Using both the dashboard method or the miles/gallons calculation, our overall mpg is 27. Our city mpg is 29. Upon questioning the dealer the first time we were told there is a “break-in” period - that’s interesting. Next we were told that the Hybrid doesn’t get good mileage in cold weather (we live in Northern Michigan!). Finally we were told that unless there is a warning light on there is nothing they can do to analyze our paltry mpg. I would like to sell our CR-V and buy a Hyundai gas only vehicle. Very, Very disappointed in Honda. This is outright false advertising and consumer fraud.

I've seen both positive and negative comments on the CRV Hybrid, and wish there was an answer re mileage. I'm in the Midwest and have a '20 and '22, getting 36-38mpg. My '22 was bought in Oct and driven 5000mi with an overall 37.6mpg, which includes winter temps and snow. LI batteries do lose 30% memory below 36°, but I drive each car in ECON, use the paddles, coast to stops, and have a light foot when I get up to a constant speed. Even at 70mph, the EV will go on when going downhill or level. My previous cars got 24-26 city, 30 highway, and I am pleased with my results. What's funny is that my '20 had to break in a few thousand miles to get to the mid 30's, although I bought it in January. The '22 has had great mileage since day 1. Whether Honda tunes the newer models differently, I don't know, but both cars are keepers until the plug-in gas hybrids arrive. By the way, my neighbor's RAV4 Hybrid gets the same mileage.

I'm driving a 2022 ex hybrid rental this week in California using AC because it's 113 degrees outside. Freeway mpg at 70 mph was showing 36.8. Back in the city with lots of surface streets, it has crept up to 38 mpg on the same tank. I've run about 300 miles on approximately a half tank. I don't understand what I could possibly do to get 30mpg. I'm wanting to buy one of these but some of these comments are scaring me:-). I just don't get it.

I have a 2022 Honda crv ex hybrid and am getting 32 to 33 miles per gallon. I got it because of the ad 38 to 40. So what am I doing wrong? My driving is city driving with occasional freeway driving.

2022 CR-V Hybrid. 3000 mile mix city/ hwy averaging 33.4 mpg. Very disappointing! I get 29 on the highway in my Pacifica gas only! Honda should rebate us the extra hybrid cost,

sgarcia (not verified)    June 26, 2022 - 4:18PM

we went on a road trip about 6 hours each way and really focused on mpgs. we were getting 29 before, now we're getting between 40 - 45 on each drive. you just have to learn to drive the car.

2022 CRV Hybrid Touring.

Getting about 35mpg on ECON mode in the city. Flat ground. No AC or Heater.
Was expecting more like 40.

Had a 2019 CRV and loved it. Got a 2022 CRV Hybrid Touring for the better gas mileage and after 17000 miles I'm averaging 2-3 mph less than my previous non-hybrid. Even worse now in the winter. Really disappointed.

Beth West (not verified)    January 19, 2023 - 10:12AM

Unfortunately, I can echo all of the previous comments. Just got a 2023 Touring Hybrid CRV. Third tank of gas is giving me 28 mpg. So disappointed. This is my third CRV. Doesn't seem to have any value in getting the Hybrid.

Dawn Shams (not verified)    January 27, 2023 - 1:00PM

Same, brand new '23 CRV Sport Touring Hybrid. I'm really disappointed with the MPG, but it was going to be many months before the RAV4 hybrid I put a deposit down would come in, so I went w/ the Honda. I'm getting around 28mpg, city driving, easy on the gas, but I do run the heat some/ApplePlay. People have mentioned using the paddles -- what's a good setting or best way to take advantage of these? Any tips on improving MPG are appreciated.

Tom Woods (not verified)    February 3, 2023 - 8:22PM

32 to MPG 35 is all I am getting City. My CRV hybrid was advertised as 41 MPG. I thought the mileage would cover the extra cost of the hybrid. Not so.

C Mast (not verified)    April 2, 2023 - 4:06PM

We just purchased CRV hybrid sport and it is NOT getting the milage they advertised. Having buyers' regret. May return the vehicle.

Tom Fitzgerald (not verified)    April 25, 2023 - 12:50PM

Agree; there needs to be a class action lawsuit on this; my 2023 CRV AWD Hybrid Sport is averaging less than 27 mpg; very disappointed, if it is not improving in next month I will be following up with Honda for return of the vehicle as not performing as advertised.
