We compare the smaller Ford Ranger to the larger Ford Maverick. Here is the tale of the tape.

When you think of how large a vehicle is, do you care more about the external dimensions or the internal space? For us, it is always the internal space. The Ford Bronco Sport is larger than the “smaller” Bronco. How do we know? Well, we tested them and then checked Ford’s specification pages to verify what we felt. That the “larger vehicle” isn’t.

We just finished up a great week testing one of the most important new vehicles of 2022, the Ford Maverick Hybrid. When it arrived, we were surprised by just how roomy it was inside. Our gut feel was that it was “bigger” than the Ranger we had tested some months back. Memories are not always accurate, so we checked the specs and then we pulled together this comparison chart for readers. As you can see, the Ford Maverick is bigger inside than the Ranger. We threw the new Hyundai Santa Cruz dimensions in for our readers to see as well.

We’re not trying to play any games with the numbers. As you can see, the cargo box is about 6.6-inches longer for the Ranger SuperCrew, and 18.4-inches longer in the Ranger SuperCab. Without a doubt, the Ranger has the bigger cargo length, area, and volume.

However, inside, the Maverick is larger than the Ranger. That space is also very usable. The driver’s right knee area is not confined, and all dimensions feel roomy, like they do inside a Bronco Sport.

Given the fact that the Maverick is larger inside than the Ranger, we are not certain which to call the bigger vehicle. Sure the Ranger has a longer body externally by about 10 inches, but is that a good thing? Not when parking.

We are not trying to compare or contrast the Maverick and Ranger so much as draw attention to the fact the Maverick is not really smaller in a very important way. If you are looking for a truck to be used often as your daily driver, family vehicle, and commuter vehicle, be sure you check out the Maverick. Its interior volume will surprise you if you had it pegged as a “small truck.”
