As I reported recently, Stellantis is rethinking its EV programs due to declining demand and the recent re-election of Donald Trump. Even though the recently elected president is very close with Tesla owner Elon Musk, the new president is not a fan of forcing people to abandon gas-powered vehicles. It should come as no surprise that many of the automakers are delaying or reconsidering plans to produce electric vehicles. Chrysler recently notified suppliers that it is canceling the Chrysler Airflow EV. Now, there are reports that Ram is notifying suppliers that it is canceling plans for the extended range version of the Ram 1500 REV.
2025 Ram 1500 REV Delayed
I reported, in December, that one of Tim Kuniskis’ first moves when he was brought back to lead Ram was to delay the plans for the 2025 Ram 1500 REV BEV until at least 2026. Kuniskis instead is moving up the launch of the highly anticipated Ramcharger hybrid.
As I have reported previously, the Ram 1500 Ramcharger could be the best of both worlds. The Ramcharger would have incredible range because of an on-board engine that recharges the battery.
According to Ram,
“The decision to launch Ramcharger first was driven by overwhelming consumer interest, maintaining a competitive advantage in the technology and slowing industry demand for half-ton BEV pickups.
Ramcharger will be open for consumer orders in the first half of 2025 followed by the Ram 1500 REV launch in 2026.”
“The all-new 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger with a class-shattering targeted range of up to 690 miles is the latest example of how Ram will offer customers benchmark gas and electric vehicles delivering disruptive, leading-edge advanced technology. The 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger features a 92 kilowatt-hour battery pack, paired with an on-board 130 kW generator, sending power to 250 kW front and 238 kW rear electric drive modules (EDMs). Vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-home bi-directional charging affords the Ram 1500 Ramcharger the flexibility to charge another Stellantis battery-electric vehicle or provide power back to the grid. Targeted performance figures include a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds, 663 horsepower and over 615 lb.-ft. of torque, up to a best-in-class 14,000 pounds towing with a class 5 hitch and a best-in-class maximum payload capacity of 2,625 pounds.”
The onboard gas-powered generator would never drive the truck’s wheels, instead it would continually recharge the truck’s battery pack.
2025 Ram 1500 REV Extended Version Canceled
The Ram 1500 REV is expected to get about 350 miles of range on a charge, while the extended range version would have gotten about 500 miles.
Mopar Insiders is reporting that Ram has notified suppliers about the cancellation of the extended range version. Mopar Insiders quotes an urgent message to Ram suppliers that says,
“As Stellantis continues to focus on the launch of the Ram 1500 Ramcharger and Ram 1500 REV (BEV L), the Company has made the decision to CANCEL the Light Duty Ram 1500 DT BEV XL (long range variant).
Consequently, we ask you to immediately cease all activities related to this project and suspend all incremental spending. Please note that the cancellation only applies to UNIQUE BEV XL parts. Work on any parts shared with the BEV L should NOT be cancelled/stopped.”
You really do have to wonder if Ram will eventually cancel the Ram 1500 REV BEV entirely. By 2026, the market should be saturated with BEV pickups. Tesla, Ford, Rivian, Chevrolet and GMC all have versions available now. It might be wiser for Ram to focus on the different technology and find ways to offer a true alternative vehicle.
