Updated CR’s 10 Best Cars Of The Year, Subaru Crosstrek And Forester Shine Brightest

What are the ten best cars of the year? According to a new report from Consumer Reports, the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek and 2024 Subaru Forester are now among the best picks for new car shoppers.

I cover the Consumer Reports' ten best models annually, and Subaru has strong showings again in 2024. In its updated rankings, Consumer Reports (by subscription) says the next-generation 2024 Subaru Crosstrek and 2024 Subaru Forester are among the top ten best models for new car shoppers this year.

CR says, "Subaru and Toyota made strong showings again this year, with two and four models, respectively. These two brands consistently offer smartly engineered models with simple controls, comfortable cabins, and the infotainment and advanced safety features that matter most."

That is quite an honor for Subaru.

CR goes on to say, "History and extensive survey analysis show that the reliability of most models improves over the time they're in production, with the last year of each generation typically being the most trouble-free, which adds to the appeal of the 2024 Subaru Forester and Toyota Camry."

How does CR choose the top models?

Consumer Reports selects its 10 Top Picks each year based on road-test performance, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety. CR says all top picks come standard with automatic emergency braking that works at low speeds with pedestrian detection and highway speeds.

What does CR say about the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek?

  • Price Range:  $25,195 - $32,195
  • CR MPG:  Overall 29 / City 20 / Hwy 41 mpg
  • #1 of 12  Subcompact SUVs

The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek is the best Subcompact SUV

"Redesigned for 2024, the Crosstrek made evolutionary advancements with engine and transmission refinements, a more modern infotainment system, an optional power seat, and an improved EyeSight suite of active safety features that all heighten its appeal. At 29 mpg overall, the Crosstrek boasts the best fuel economy for a non-hybrid SUV with all-wheel drive, but admittedly, the base 2.0-liter engine is a bit weak. The uplevel 2.5-liter engine is quicker, quieter, and more satisfying."

"Adding to the experience is the Crosstrek's excellent ride quality and good everyday handling. It's easy to enter, and the cabin is roomy, with supportive seats and good outward visibility. This versatile vehicle is as well suited to urban errands as it is to weekend adventures."

What does CR say about the 2024 Subaru Forester?

  • Price Range:  $27,095 - $37,395
  • CR MPG:  Overall 28 / City 20 / Hwy 38 mpg
  • #2 of 31  Compact SUVs

The 2024 Subaru Forester is the best Compact SUV

"In its last year before a redesign, the Forester still stands tall, making its 11th appearance as a Top Pick. The winning formula includes a boxy design that maximizes interior space and grants unrivaled visibility. Access is a cinch, thanks to large doors and an elevated ride height."

"The seats are comfortable, the room is generous, and the squared-off cargo space is copious. The Forester is among the best-riding models in its class, and its handling is responsive and secure. This well-rounded small SUV delivers, making it easy to recommend year after year."

MY TAKE

The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek and 2024 Subaru Forester score very high in road-test performance, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety technology. Those are things all car buyers are looking for.

Consumer Reports does not measure how well a vehicle performs in snow, mud, ice, and extreme weather conditions. The Subaru brand appeals to customers who lead active lifestyles and will use their all-wheel-drive vehicle for more than a commuter vehicle and grocery hauler.

You'll find many Subaru owners heading to the ski slopes this weekend. Where I live in Colorado, you'll see many Crosstrek and Forester SUVs with snowboards and skis on the top roof rack. It's what Subaru owners do on the weekends.

This is the latest information regarding the Subaru Crosstrek and Forester. I'll keep you updated with any new information on the two models.
