The next-generation 2020 Subaru Legacy, built at the automaker’s plant in Lafayette, Indiana, is exclusive for North American customers. Subaru Indiana Automotive was shipping some Legacy models to Europe. Russia has just announced they will sell a Limited Edition “Legacy Ultimate” 2019 model to end the sedan’s run. They will only be offering 77 examples of the special sedan for customers.

We are guessing the model is being dropped because Subaru Motor LLC, the official supplier of Subaru vehicles, was not selling many of the all-wheel-drive sedans. The announcement says, “the new generation 2020 Subaru Legacy, which is produced at the plant in the U.S. for the North American market, will not be delivered to our market.”

The U.S. spec Legacy gets the new 260 horsepower 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine, but it won’t ever be sold in Russia. The special edition “Legacy Ultimate” will be powered by the older version naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine producing 175 horsepower.

North America gets the 2020 Subaru Legacy models with an updated 2.5-liter engine with direct injection producing 182 horsepower with improved fuel efficiency. The 2019 models achieved 25/34/29 city/highway/combined mpg, the 2020 Legacy gets an EPA estimated 27/35/30 mpg.

The 77 “Legacy Ultimate” models with a price of 2,699,900 rubles, ($37,772 USD) get a few extra treatments to set it apart. It comes with a black grille, black wheels, and Ultimate nameplates on the exterior and interior. Inside it gets special leather/suede upholstery, black trim, and a numbered nameplate above the gear shift.

The Legacy Ultimate is available in four body colors: Crystal White Pearl, Crystal Black Silica, Dark Red Mother of Pearl, and Dark Gray Metallic.

Subaru of America is the Japanese automaker’s number one market in the world and gets rewarded for it. American sedan buyers get the new generation Subaru Legacy Sport trim that rides on the Subaru Global Platform, with a 2.5-liter engine, black wheels, black grille, trunk spoiler, LED fog lights, and silver brake calipers, but with a much lower price tag ($27,955).

The 2020 Subaru Legacy Sport hits the sweet spot and offers the best value of all the Legacy trims. If you are shopping for a sedan, aren’t you glad you live in North America?

The real question to me is whether Subaru will wise up and offer the Harman Kardon sound system in either the 20/21 Legacy Sport or 21 Outback Onyx XT.

I wanted an Onyx XT but Subaru decided that I can't have the good stereo with the sporty blacked out look in a legacy or outback. If I want the HK system I need to get.the limited or touring for either the Legacy or Outback. It's silly. I bought a second 20 Forester Sport, because I like the blacked out look but also appreciate a good sounding stereo.

Please Subaru, offer the HK system as an option for the Onyx XT and Legacy Sport.
