Subaru Slapped With Another Lawsuit; Have You Had Starlink Problems?

2018 could be described as the year of the lawsuit for Subaru. They are slapped with another one. See what they are being sued for now.

Subaru gets slapped with another lawsuit and this one doesn’t involve the Subaru Boxer engine. This one involves their Subaru Starlink infotainment system in the 2018 Subaru Outback, 2018 Crosstrek, 2017-2018 Impreza, 2018 Legacy, and 2018 BRZ.

Subaru’s Starlink offers a suite of onboard technology bringing multimedia content with smartphone connectivity, navigation, and extra safety to Subaru vehicles. A driver can use the Starlink system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth. The technology also includes the screen for the backup camera, controls for the radio and audio system.

According to a report from carcomplaints.com, the new lawsuit alleges the Subaru Starlink infotainment systems “freeze and malfunction because the head units fail, and updates offered by the automaker have allegedly failed to fix the systems.” The Starlink systems consist of Harman Gen 3 audio and navigation head units, and the lawsuit alleges it's the head units that create safety concerns for Subaru drivers.

The plaintiff, Chad Udeen, from Tennessee, represented by Chimicles & Tikellis, and J. Llewellyn Mathews, says shortly after he leased his new 2018 Subaru Outback, he began experiencing problems with the Starlink system. Udeen claims the screen went blank multiple times and continued to get worse until the head unit failed in April 2018. After multiple trips to the Subaru dealer, and having the head unit replaced, his problem was still not fixed.

10 alleged Starlink problems

The lawsuit alleges there are 10 problems with Starlink including the backup camera freezing/or shutdowns, loss of audio functions, complete system lockup, display shutoff, inability to shut radio/audio off or turn high volume level down when backing up, radio comes on at high volume when the car is turned on, smartphone favorites aren’t saved, audio/radio functioning is erratic, touchscreen controls are unresponsive, and Bluetooth connectivity issues.

Even though Subaru has issued at least two Starlink software updates to fix the head units, the lawsuit claims some customers weren't helped much by the updates or by technical service bulletins (TSBs) issued by Subaru to dealerships. The lawsuit also says new TSBs are supposed to be sent in July 2019 to correct the problem because the past updates have failed to work on the 2018 Subaru Outback, 2018 Crosstrek, 2017-2018 Impreza, 2018 Legacy, and 2018 BRZ. I was told having the radio turning on when I want off is a "feature". Mine is so bad I have an appointment made to have it reprogrammed, taking fours hours. I have had this 2019 WRX STI for 2 weeks. I had a different one in my 2016, which didn't have that "feature"; but the camera did freeze or not work at various times. I was given a song and dance that they could not provide a different system because of the wiring. I said, I could buy an after market system and put in. The response "that's because those are universal". Somebody hand that person a sign.

I have a 2017 Crosstrek and the head unit freezes up when it is 85 degrees or hotter outside. Running the A/C seems to help but when it does happen, I have no control over anything, no control from the steering wheel buttons, the radio either freezes up or scrolls endlessly thru stations, the unit randomly selects what screen to display, etc. Backup camera works 90% of the time which makes it not reliable. Turning the car off and back on again resets everything. Tough to do when you're using navigation on the freeway. I'm not doing anything about it until it fails as I don't see anyone including the 2017 Crosstrek in the lawsuits.

I have a 2016 preowned Subaru Forester ... I am reading these reviews and feel that I could be writing them about my Subaru (purchased April, 2019). I even contacted the previous owners who said they had no issues??? When I told them my issues with the GPS Starlink system, they indicated that they "couldn't figure it out and never used it - they just used road maps"! When I commented on the radio, they said they just turned it off and on, but didn't touch any other buttons. The dealership programmed it for them.

HARD DECISION TO MAKE !!!!! dealer has installed 2 different radios into my 2018 crosstrek since new and done NUMEROUS UPDATES-- as of july 11, 2019 radio still behaving like a PIECE of GARBAGE - Dealer had no problem cashing my purchase cheque BUT since then going to them to get radio problems RECTIFIED,, has just been a WASTE of my TIME and GASOLINE -- STAY AWAY FROM SUBARU VEHICLES

I purchased a 2019 Crosstrek along with the Starlink subscription for 3 years and the Remote Services have not worked for the last 2 months. To make things worse, no one seems to be able to figure out what the problem is. I've taken it to my local dealership and they told me to call the corporate phone number. When I did, they say I have to take it to the dealership. This has been extremely frustrating and only demonstrates how much the quality of Subaru vehicles has slipped.

The infotainment system is complex. People not familiar with using complex computer systems usually resort to law suits rather than admit they don't know what they are doing. On the other hand, most car dealers are not equipped to deal with complex computer systems either. Maybe the infotainment system should be eliminated. A nice AM/FM would suffice. I don't drive cars to hear music and make phone calls. It's the only car I've ever driven that holds so tightly to gravel. I can't wait to get it in the snow.

Subaru is a lying disgrace. They offer a bumper to bumper warranty for a new vehicle, but they don't mean it. They hate their customers and are terrified of acknowledging that they sell sh-tty cars and offer FALSE bumper-to-bumper warranties. They just hope everyone will go away. Don't go away. Sue these lousy scum f-cks!

My 50th Anniversary BRZ has had radio issues since the 2nd month. The delayed audio ranges from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. Subaru claimed the July 2019 update would fix the problem but it made it worse. At 6400 miles, the radio changes stations when it feels like it. The Map screen changes to the Home Screen or Phone screen randomly. The Phone option decided to not find a contact that I call frequently from the car for 20 minutes and until I called another contact then it found the 1st contact. The latest FAIL is an error message saying my phone has an ERROR and needs to be replugged in to charge it. That message came up repeatedly in 1 day. Subaru agreed to provide a loaner while they tried to duplicate the problems. When I arrived at the dealer for my 7:30am aopt, there was no loaner. I was told that I would get a call as soon as the loaner was returned and status on my car no later than Noon At 1:30pm I called Corporate to report that their dealer had kidnapped my car, was not reachable by phone and either Corp resolve my problem or I turn in the theft to the police. 20 minutes later, the dealer texted that they could not duplicate the problem and I should take videos next time the problem happened but I could pick up my car.. I tracked down the Service Manager, sat him in the car and duplicated 1 of the numerous problems. He told me to get an iPhone instead of my Samsung. The audio issues w this head unit are well documented on other models. I suspect the 50th Anniversary head unit is the same POS that is on the Cutbacks since this is a different unit than the standard BRZ. Its bad enough that I can't get the GPS to update and recognize 5 year old businesses or my home address but to be told to buy a new iPhone because Subaru cant write software is an INSULT!!! Where do we sign up for the class action lawsuit?

The 2018+ Infotainment systems must be the cause for a lot of regret for the folks at Subaru. There are so many different kinds of problems listed on multiple sites and blogs that I didn't even try to list them. I've been looking to buy a new Outback, but ever since I bought a Chevy Citation years ago and got burned with many repairs and dealers that flat out refused to take the car for a give-away trade-in price, I've always done a lot of research before buying a vehicle.

I'm glad I checked on the 2018+ model Subarus. There are hundreds, no, apparently, thousands of posts, from people about the problems they're having with these systems. Too bad too, I was really sold on the car and the updates the 2018 models provided.

I even found 2 dealers when searching used cars that indicate, honestly and to their credit, that the cars were repurchased via the lemon law but that the Infotainment system Head Unit had been replaced and was the cause of the buyback.

Even if all of the quality failures were to be addressed, I'm not sure I'd want to pay for a system that requires workarounds or lengthy button pushes so you can turn it off and have it stay off. For that, all they needed to do was provide an on/off button that turns the radio on or off with each tap, and have it say that way until you explicitly ask to have it on again. No, I don't want to shut the entire thing down by holding a button down for several seconds each time, twisting the volume knob, plugging in a fake USB cord, Sirrus 0 and so forth.

For those of you who think this is not a problem, I wish I could have you log onto your computer every day by adding a half-dozen needless steps just because I think it's good for you to waste your time and be annoyed, and every time you come back to your office and start using your computer again, it starts making loud noises that sounds like monkeys screaming into a tin can while they bang pots and pans and then take some additional steps, every time, a dozen times per day, to turn that off too. After a few days of that, go back to these comments and take a look at why they're so angry that they're talking about beating on it with a hammer.

My 2017 Forester has had nothing but problems with the Starlink system since Day 1. I had the whole system replaced TWICE and it still doesn't work. Subaru even paid me $5000 to keep the car and a 100,000 mile warranty w/ zero deductible, but the stress of my navigation system not working and me getting lost all the time is not even worth it. It even hijacks my waze and google maps apps on my iphone when connected via bluetooth or usb to the subaru. I know it sounds crazy but it happens all the time. Anyone else have these problems? I keep taking it in, but it is tough to diagnose intermittent problems such as these. I have been taking videos of what happens with the radio presetting itself, system freezing up completely, gps sending me in u turn after u turn going crazy, etc. So sad because I LOVE my Forester other than this.

Donna (not verified)    November 4, 2019 - 1:10PM

My radio comes on every time I turn car on (and louder than I left it) but I have learned to turn the volume all the way off. My bigger issue is that all of my preset radio stations continue to disappear on the radio and I have to reset each time I start the car? This just started happening on my 2019 Subaru Crosstrek and I've had the car for 1 year.

Tom Niziol (not verified)    November 28, 2019 - 1:52PM

Just got my 2020. Was told by the Dealer this "great" system worked off satellite. Well guess what it doesn't, it works off AT&T, and if you live in rural areas or mountains like SO many Subaru people, AT&T is woefully inadequate in coverage, Soooo, Starlink is useless in these areas. What in the world was Subaru thinking!! The system is also very complicated to use, yes, you can get around many features by using voice commands, but simple things like changing a seat-heater setting is not voice activated. So, I have to take my eyes off the road, go to a computer screen, hit two or three additional touch screens to keep my bottom from burning. I had always wanted to remote start my vehicle so it could warm up and defrost before I went outside. I just spent over $30,000 and I still do not have remote start capability at my house. I predict that accidents involving Subarus will climb, mainly due to the fact that this new technology means you will be distracted from looking at the road to search for these screens. In the Ford Escape we have, you just reach down and turn a little wheel button to turn the heater off. There is a point when technology becomes too overwhelming and actually more dangerous the old analog buttons and Subaru has reached that point. If I had to do it over, I would not have bought a Subaru. The car is great mechanically and safety wise but Starlink is more than enough to send me to another vehicle.

I have brought my 2018 Outback in to dealer 5 times and my issue is still not fixed. My front speakers cut out completely for about 5 seconds at random times. Very annoying!

I've always had a lot of confidence in Subaru vehicles, the engineering is excellent, I consider them one of the best. But the Harmon Kardon infotainment system in the center of the console appears to be causing a lot of issues in upscale 2018+ models. I delayed purchase of a 2018 and later model until they have these issues resolved. I'll wait.

Arnie Eastman (not verified)    December 6, 2019 - 1:32PM

My wife and I purchased our 2018 Subaru Crosstrek Limited in December of 2017. We started having these issues with the stereo systems in early 2018. We still issues erratically. This last weekend, I started the car, and the radio came on, but shortly afterword, the radio went blank, with static lines across the screen. I shut the car down, waited a couple minutes, and restarted. It did it again, so I tried again. This time it came up the way it should. This is the first time for that, but previous issues were, screen locking, inability to use touch screen or volume controls, and backup camera issues. I'm making an appointment with Subaru today to fix the issue. Previously the dealer has asked me to reset the system. This is okay once, or maybe even twice, but when you buy a new car, everything should work flawlessly without me having to reset anything. This is an expensive car, and resetting the radio is not a fix.

Nick Krohn (not verified)    December 14, 2019 - 7:13PM

I have a 2019 Subaru Forster premium and when mine is cold I have noticed that the head unit will go completely blank and then restart it self it takes a couple seconds to do so this has happened to me 2 times now it never did it when the weather was warm out side has an one else had that issue

Jeanne Ratchford (not verified)    January 6, 2020 - 4:57PM

It's SO annoying! I was just in again this weekend and was told they would fix the problem. I got in, turned on the car and the radio was blasting. I turned the radio off, turned off the ignition and then started the car up again - same problem. The tech came out and told me I have to hold the off button for several seconds before turning off the car in order to not have the radio blast upon start-up. SO annoying!

2019 outback GPS head unit has not worked sine we purchased the vehicle. It's had numerous updates, actually yells me it's up to date all day long??Had the head unit replaced a month later same issues. I was then told the units they replace with are REFURBISHED. Same problems. Last time to dealer was told to get a NEW unit takes an act of congress???Subaru has always made great vehicles. I think the problem is Subaru has gotten too popular and quality has gone down hill. I no longer recommend the brand, will never purchase another. Very disappointing. Time to start making waves. SOCIAL MEDIA IS THE WAY TO GO. Let them see the problems in print on Social media all over the place.

I am so disappointed in Subaru. LOVE. That's what makes a Subaru...until you have a problem. My system is buggy. Its all over the internet with several class action suits. You'd think Subaru would want to make right to save its name. Went today asking them to replace, ohhhh no we'll give you a software update. Stringing everything along. Trouble with bluetooth pairing??? oh its my phone....Trouble with engine ticking noise??? oh its the gas I'm using. They just put a band aid on it and hope you won't come back. Surprised they treat their customers that way. Not feelin the LOVE.

Vicky Sokoloff (not verified)    March 4, 2020 - 5:53PM

My 2019 Outback came with a host of problem that the dealer has been unable to resolve. Playing from media is a joke. The car does what it want to and is haunted by the ghost of Prince. Did not have a smart phone when I got the car. Called the dealer before purchasing one last month. She said any andoid would work. Only after they were unable to link it after 2 trips to the dealership did they suddenly say the phone is not compatible with the car (and of course like everything else, nothing is ever their fault). The radio has been updated numerous times over 6 months and most of the problems are as bad or worse as when I brought the lemon home.

Jack chielli (not verified)    April 4, 2020 - 4:15PM

I had those problems with my 2019. After trading I the 2016 which had similar problems I was told Subaru “fixes” all the issues with Apple play. I’m now sitting in the dealership waiting for them to install the new Update from Subaru Corbet. The whole system froze up and wasn’t working. My fear is I’m right back to where I began with my 2016. I can’t believe the company could go so many years without getting the electronics fixed.

brian krzyzaniak (not verified)    April 6, 2020 - 7:48PM

THEY can send people to the space station and bring another group back to earth AND YET subaru can't figure out these radio problems !!! AFTER ALL THESE YEARS maybe GET A NEW RADIO SUPPLIER !! MY 2018 crosstrek just got it's FOURTH radio at the end of january-2020

Niki Magee (not verified)    April 21, 2020 - 10:56PM

Crosstrek 2018...hopeless maps and phone problems. They told me it was my phone. It's been going on since the radio recall and supposed update. If I don't turn when it tells me, it loses the GPS signal, and then the phone disappears. There have been many variations. Glad to see this article. I bought this car for maps and phone convenience. A senior not going crazy!

brian (not verified)    April 22, 2020 - 10:47PM

AS of APRIL 2020 dealer has replaced radio in my 2018 crosstrek 4 TIMES ALREADY !!! COULD A baker's dozen (( 13 )) radio replacements be in our future ????????

FTE (not verified)    May 22, 2020 - 11:51AM

My new 2020 Legacy (1000 miles) is already in the shop for a week as it will not connect with Starlink. A new head unit was installed, but they still can't get the software to work. It appears that no one knows what the problem is.

You would think that after being sued and having to pay out over this in prior years, they would finally fix the problems.
