Subaru Outback Regains Its Top Spot - The New Wilderness Gets Hot This Spring

The newly upgraded 2023 Subaru Outback is now the top-selling model in Subaru's all-wheel-drive lineup, at least for now. See why the new Wilderness trim level gives Outback a boost this spring.

The newly-upgraded Subaru Outback is now the best-selling model in Subaru of America's lineup. Subaru of America reports in April, and Outback was the top performer by volume with 15,263 vehicle sales. The Outback Wilderness is a significant reason why the Outback sales surged in April.

Outback is back on top and was the top performer in April.

The newly upgraded 2023 Subaru Outback midsize SUV decreased 7.6 percent in April, with 15,263 models sold compared with 16,510 in April 2022. But even with the drop, the Outback was the top-volume model passing the red-hot Crosstrek. Nevertheless, Outback is still down 2.9 percent in the first four months of 2023.

The Outback is up and down.

The Outback is good in sales performance but still down for the first four months of 2023. It's just slightly behind last year's numbers, with 48,030 midsize SUVs delivered to customers throughout the first four months, compared with 49,482 models sold in the previous year at the same time. Outback is down 2.9 percent this year so far.

Outback is still behind the Crosstrek.

The hot Crosstrek subcompact started the first three months of 2023 red hot, and in April, the subcompact SUV cooled off. As a result, Crosstrek was the second-best performer by volume behind the Outback, dropping 14.2 percent with 10,310 sales in April compared with 12,017 in April 2022. However, the Crosstrek is still up 4.8 percent for the year's first four months.

The hot Crosstrek is up 4.8 percent for the year's first four months. Crosstrek has 51,872 sales and is now only 3,842 model sales ahead of the Outback.
