How safe are the 2022 Subaru Forester and 2022 Subaru Outback? A new report from iSeeCars says the Forester is the safest small SUV and the Outback a close second out of the top fourteen models. They also scored the best in value retention and reliability.
The 2022 Forester and 2022 Outback score a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Both Subaru models earn the highest Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The Subaru Forester and Outback are the only small SUVs to achieve a perfect NHTSA five-star rating.
The 2022 Forester compact SUV and 2022 Outback midsize SUV also scored highest in iSeeCars’ Quality Score for each model. They combined the small SUV’s safety scores (derived directly from its NHTSA ratings) with its reliability rating and value retention score.
The 2022 Forester and 2022 Outback earned an iSeeCars score of 8.7, the highest of all fourteen small SUVs. The Toyota RAV4 is #3 on the iSeeCars safest small SUV ranking, followed by the Hyundai Tucson, Honda CR-V, Kim Sportage, Ford Escape, Mitsubishi Outlander, Mazda CX-5, Chevrolet, Equinox, BMC Terrain, Jeep Cherokee, Nissan Rogue, and Volkswagen Tiguan.
The best resale value
In value retention, the Subaru Outback and Forester score highest in Kelly Blue Book’s 2021 Best Resale Value Awards. The 2021 Subaru Forester wins the Compact SUV category, and the 2021 Subaru Outback takes home the best Midsize SUV 2-row award. Read the complete study from Subaru Report here.

The Subaru Outback and Forester are ranked high by Consumer Reports in predicted reliability.
