New Subaru BRZ tS Arrives This Spring, Will It Save The Sport Coupe?

The good news is that the 2024 Subaru BRZ tS will arrive this spring. Will the new coupe be enough to save the BRZ?

Will Subaru drop the BRZ sport coupe because of slow sales? In my two decades of covering Subaru, I think it's unlikely because the BRZ is not a high-volume model for Subaru of America. It's a loss leader that brings in new customers to the showroom. Owners who trade in rear-drive sports cars will buy a Subaru Crosstrek or Forester.

Let's take a look at the BRZ sales for February. They aren't stellar.

BRZ by the numbers

The BRZ sport coupe dropped 33.9 percent in February, with 243 models sold to customers, compared to 368 in February 2023. The BRZ is down 29.6 percent in the first two months of 2024. Only the WRX dropped more in February (-46.3%).

What's coming next for the BRZ?

Meet the 2024 Subaru BRZ tS. (tuned by STI) It's all-new, and it arrives just in time. Will it be enough to improve sales? I was impressed by the new BRZ tS, even though it doesn't get any new power upgrades.

The 2024 BRZ tS is the new trim level for 2024.

The tS has a six-speed close-ratio manual transmission and EyeSight driver assist technology. The BRZ tS will have Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Keep Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Steering-Responsive Headlights with High Beam Assist, and Starlink safety and security.

Other upgrades include a sport-tuned suspension from Subaru Tecnica International, high-performance Brembo brakes, 18-inch wheels in a dark gray metallic finish wrapped in 215/40 R18 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, tS badging, and unique interior upgrades.

The BRZ tS also includes heated exterior power mirrors, an upgraded audio system with a 2-channel amplifier, and two additional speakers.

MY TAKE

I would say there are enough BRZ tS upgrades to make a significant difference in performance. Check out what's new.

It's important for BRZ tS buyers to know what's different than the Premium and Limited trims.

  • 4-wheel independent suspension with STI-tuned dampers. Front: Strut type with lower L-arm. Stabilizer bar. Rear: Double wishbone.
  • 4-wheel disc, ventilated front and rear. 4-piston front and dual-piston rear calipers. 4-channel, 4-sensor ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), 12.8 inches/12.4 inches front/rear.
  • 18 x 7.5-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, dark gray metallic finish
  • Crystal Black Silica-finished side mirrors
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter handle with blue stitching.
  • Ultrasuede /leather-trimmed upholstery with blue accents and contrast stitching
  • STI-design 7-inch LCD configurable digital gauge cluster with Normal and Track modes and red metallic accents

What's the price of the 2024 BRZ?

The BRZ Premium with a 6-speed manual gearbox has a starting price of $31,315. BRZ Limited (6-speed manual) has a starting MSRP of $33,815. The Limited with an automatic transmission starts at $34,765. The new BRZ tS MSRP starts at $36,465. Prices include destination and delivery fees ($1,120).

I would say the BRZ tS is a good sports car value for performance and driving enthusiasts. Subaru of America says the 2024 BRZ will arrive in U.S. showrooms early next year. Will it be enough? Overall, I'd give the BRZ tS a B-minus grade.
