The New Crosstrek Is Now Subaru’s Only KBB Best Resale Value Award Winner

The Kelley Blue Book Best Resale Value Awards have been announced, and Subaru now has only one value winner: the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek. What happened to the Subaru Forester and Outback?

As I cover Kelley Blue Book's Best Resale Value Awards annually, I expect the Forester, Outback, and Crosstrek to be on the list because they are perennial winners. However, KBB's 2024 Best Resale Value Awards: Top Cars, Trucks, and SUVs now has only one Subaru value winner, the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek.

Last year, Subaru earned three individual segment honors.

Subaru's three new segment winners in 2023 were Subaru of America's top-three-selling SUVs. The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek scored the best Subcompact SUV, the 2023 Subaru Forester won the Compact SUV segment, and the 2023 Subaru Outback won the best Midsize 2-Row SUV award. The three Subaru SUVs also won the best resale value awards in 2022.

What does KBB say about the 2024 Crosstrek?

"While the successful Subaru Crosstrek enters a completely new generation for 2024, the changes are decidedly evolutionary. That's okay in our book because we were already fans of this spunky adventure wagon. Wait, is it a wagon? Not technically; however, calling it an SUV is a stretch, too. It's really somewhere in between."

Where are the Forester and Outback?

In the compact SUV category, the 2024 Subaru Forester is beaten out by the Honda CR-V, and the Hyundai Palisade overtakes the 2024 Subaru Outback in the Midsize SUV category.

What does it mean for new car shoppers?

If you plan on keeping your new car for 3-5 years, depreciation (loss of value) is typically your primary expense during ownership. It shows shoppers which vehicle will be the best regarding resale value.

KBB's Best Resale Value Awards recognize 2024 model-year vehicles for their projected retained value through the initial five-year ownership period. These latest KBB accolades for the Subaru Crosstrek let consumers know it will keep its value better than the other subcompact SUVs. 

This can make the most significant difference when you trade in your vehicle after 3-5 years. You'll get more for your trade-in than other automakers' vehicles.

For new model shoppers, here is the price of the 2024 Crosstrek.

For 2024, the Crosstrek is available in Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Wilderness trim levels and has a starting price of $26,290 (the same MSRP as the 2023 Base model equipped with the Lineartronic CVT automatic transmission).

The 2024 Crosstrek Premium has a starting price of $27,440, Sport ($30,290), and Limited ($32,190). Pricing includes destination and delivery fees ($1,225).

The all-new Crosstrek Wilderness costs $33,290, including dealer destination and delivery fees ($1,295).

MY TAKE

I think these things are important for Crosstrek buyers to know.

1. The new Crosstrek inventory is improving, but don't expect a below-market deal. The Crosstrek Sport, Limited, and Wilderness trim levels are in high demand. Don't look for Subaru to negotiate below MSRP pricing.

2. Subaru offers special financing on the 2024 Outback and 2024 Forester but not the Crosstrek. Don't look for Subaru to provide extra incentives on the Crosstrek.

3. The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek still offers the best value. The all-new Crosstrek Wilderness is the hot model, so you may have to wait to get one.

Dear Denis,
Unfortunately you probably won't be responding to this before I meet on 3/15 to make an offer for the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Limited that I've been leasing since May 2021 (it has less than 9,000 miles on it). I put $3K down as a deposit and I've been paying $450 a month. The salesperson quoted me a price of $21,400 earlier if I purchased at the end of the 3-year lease on May 1 but I'd like to buy the car this month to avoid making another $450 lease payment for April. After seeing what they're asking for a lease for the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Base model (not nearly as 'plush' inside as my leased Limited) and the cost of 2024 car leases in general, I decided to buy the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek rather than to continuing leasing.

I'm 72, a single female, and want to negotiate the best deal possible on my own. Do I have any leverage to get the cost down if I pay cash? And what 'extras' should I ask for in terms of the warranty, etc. since I plan to pay outright for the car.

Dear Denis,
I hope you can provide a quick answer for me prior to a Subaru dealership appointment to offer to buy my 2021 leased Subaru Crosstrek Limited (which has less than 9,000 miles on it). I've been paying $450/per month on a 3-year lease ending on May 1, 2024 and the deposit was $3K. The salesperson made an offer at the last meeting for me to purchase the car at the end of the 3-year lease for $21,400. Is that a good price if I offer cash and close the deal this month (thus avoiding the April lease payment of $450)? Is a $20K or $19K offer for the car too low? I'm 72 years old, a single female, and want to make the best deal possible. What other 'perks' such as the warranty, etc., can I negotiate for if I make a cash offer? Thanks so much for your input.
