NEMPA Says New 2022 Subaru Outback Is The Best AWD Wagon In America

The 2022 Subaru Outback arrives at retailers now, and the New England Motor Press Association gives it a top award. Check out why it's rated so high.

The New England Motor Press Association (NEMPA) just awarded the 2022 Subaru Outback the best in class all-wheel-drive wagon in America. The New England motor press organization recently announced the winners of its annual Winter Vehicle Awards.

NEMPA President John Paul said, "Our Vehicle Awards are won by those vehicles that prove their ability and agility in one of the most densely populated and geographically distinct regions in America."

The Subaru Outback received a complete remodel for the 2020 model year, but the 2022 Outback arrives now with a new 2022 Wilderness trim for outdoor enthusiasts. John Goreham, Torque News writer and member of NEMPA, recently drove the rugged model and says, "Over dirt roads in NH, this thing is brilliant."

Goreham says the "minus-sized" high profile 17" tires are his favorite part of the car. "If you are a Subaru fan and are buying your Subie for off-road adventure, the Outback Wilderness stands above the rest of the line. The added torque from the turbocharged engine, added ground clearance, and more suitable tires are just what every Subie owner wants in their heart of hearts," says Goreham.

The next-generation Outback has received other awards, and NEMPA chose the previous generation 2015-2018 Outback as the best model if you are looking for a pre-owned car in last year's awards.

The judges gave the top award to the Outback because they say the multi-purpose wagon "has proven itself in day-to-day use for at least two years by providing dependable, trouble-free service and achieving exceptional customer satisfaction."

Why did NEMPA rate the Outback so high?

In addition to being a vehicle with a car-like ride in the most densely populated region of the country, New England winters are harsh. The 2022 Outback in regular trim can handle any severe weather you can throw at it. All Outback trims come standard with all-wheel drive, 8.7-inches of ground clearance, and X-Mode for off-road and extreme weather performance.

The NEMPA also gives Outback the award because it is a Top Safety Pick+ winner of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and received five stars from National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
