My Husband’s Dream Is a Subaru WRX STI, But He Got Me a Crosstrek, But Unfortunately My Dream Car Was Totaled When A RAM 1500 Ran a Red Light

Have you ever had a car you loved, put a lot of money into, and then it was totaled in a car crash? That happened to Catherine after her 2022 Subaru Crosstrek met a Dodge Ram pickup. Check out her incredible story.

"My Ice Metallic Silver 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Limited I purchased with 6 miles on it just got totaled in an accident."

That happened to Catherine after her Crosstrek show car met a Dodge Ram pickup in a serious accident. Cather wrote to Subaru of America and told them the story. It's a great story revealing Subaru vehicles' top safety tech and how much Subaru owners love their all-wheel-drive cars.

Imagine getting your dream car, a new Subaru Crosstrek with only 6 miles on it. It's your first new car, and you immediately start customizing it. You put a lot of time, energy, and money into making it unique, with features that set it apart from all the other Crosstreks on the road.

It's so unique that you take the all-wheel-drive SUV to the local Subaru car show in Joliet, Illinois. Fans love your car, and your hard work pays off with the recognition you receive.

Then, something horrible happens. Your beloved Crosstrek is totaled in an accident. Here is Catherine's unfortunate story.

Catherine says,

"Growing up, I was definitely molded into becoming a car girl. My father passed down his general appreciation for cars, whether he was taking me to car shows, going to races, or just yelling about a cool car driving down the road."

"As an adult, I've had some experience owning and tinkering with a few different makes and models. I was never truly in love with any of my vehicles; they just got me where I needed to go."

"In 2021, and needing a reliable vehicle after my latest disappointment, I decided I was going new, and after a nudge from my husband, whose dream car is a Subaru WRX STI, I fell in love with the Subaru Crosstrek. I purchased my Ice Metallic Silver 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Limited with 6 miles on it in March 2022."

SubieFest Midwest was a great time!

"For the next nearly 3 years, I spent every extra minute I could working on her to make her an extension of who I am. It didn't take long to discover what a tight-knit family Subaru ownership is! I've loved getting to know and learning things from my fellow subie owners."

Catherine's 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Subaru Crosstrek Meets Dodge RAM

"Unfortunately, on January 12, 2025, someone ran a red light, leaving me no time, and we collided. My dream car, my award-winning show car, was totaled. As heartbroken as that is, I couldn't believe that my passenger and I walked out of this wreck with minor bruises and slight whiplash, all thanks to the robust safety features of the Subaru Crosstrek."

"Thank goodness for Subaru Safety standards, as we squared up with a Dodge Ram 1500 and amazingly walked away. If I hadn't sold on Subaru before, this also did it for me. I'm now shopping for a replacement vehicle, and it won't be anything other than a Subaru."

"They had made a lifer out of me!" she concludes.

How safe is the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek?

If you are looking for a new or used Crosstrek, here is why the SUV is a great pick.

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek was rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and earned the Top Safety Pick award. Crosstrek has been a TSP winner for 13 consecutive years. The Crosstrek Hybrid earns the highest Top Safety Pick + award for its LED projector headlights.

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Base trim level, Premium, and Sport trims earn the best crash prevention scores from the IIHS but get a poor rating for their Halogen reflector headlights. Thus, the Top Safety Pick award is lower but still excellent.

However, customers no longer have to buy the top-trim Crosstrek Limited to get the best headlights. That was the case for the 2023 models. The Crosstrek Base and Sport trims had inferior Halogen headlights that could leave you dark on the trail.

Subaru upgraded the next-gen 2024 Crosstrek subcompact SUV with the latest safety technology, advanced adaptive cruise control with lane-centering capability, and a significant headlight upgrade.

The new Crosstrek has improved safety scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the headlights are a substantial reason why.

I used to sell Subies, and I was pretty good at it, having been driving one for over 25 years, and in 2022 named as one of two frontline salesmen in the U.S. who best rep the brand.

I once walked out to a built guy checking out a Forester, and started demoing the vehicle.

I opened the back door and pointed out a feature, “You see that?” I said thinking I was going to totally blow him away, and he said: Yeah, it’s a Nader pin, what about it?

Amazed, I said: who are you?

He replied that he was a fireman. He told me he had NEVER had to use the jaws of life to remove someone from a Subaru, and he was buying a Foreater for his family because he had seen what accident victims look like when they come out of a Subaru.

I sold a lot of Subarus using that story!

I had restored a 2005 Subaru Baja. All it needed was paint! Loved that Subie... I blew my right front tire at 75 MPH, cought the rim off the shoulder of I-95 in Maine. According to witnesses, in went nose over tail twice, and rolled 3 times. I was knocked unconscious in the first moment, so I don't remember. I came to upsidedown and hanging from my seatbelt. A nurse was taking my pulse and trying to wake me up. When the first responders got there, they couldn't get me out, so I pulled myself out. Stood up and walked to the ambulance. I sustained a broken shoulder and a concussion, but, hey! I walked away, but my Baja took it on the chin so I could live to buy another Subie! I've owned Subarus for over 40 years. That's the first one that saved my life!

I bought a 2014 Subaru Outback used, in excellent condition, drove it for two months. One day coming home from work, guy coming opposite direction crosses the double solid, hits me head on going at least 50 mph, totally destroyed the car. I walked away a little sore and shaken. Me, my wife, and daughter all Subaru owners!

My 2024 Outback was rear-ended by a car that was insured. two weeks later the insurance company called me and said they would not be taking liability because the driver was not on the policy. The insurance companies take and take but fight to never give back a dime. the Name of the company is Root bottom of the barrel the slimy shit at the bottom of a company

After blowing up the picture... it seems that the Dodge ram has no front end damage... but seems to have been hit by the drivers door.
Makes me wonder if this woman's story is true.
Btw... I own a 24 Crosstrek limited.

She said he ran a red light, so there's many different scenarios for the damage to his drivers door and not his front end. She clearly states he ran a red and there was no time to avoid the collision, meaning she was proceeding on green, he runs the light, he crosses through the intersection slightly before her and she can't stop in time before running into the side of his truck. Pretty easy to figure out, especially if it's a 4 way light/intersection...

My family and I (F35, M39, F14, M3) were heading home from a ski trip in Idaho back to WA in a 2016 outback. It's Feb, but the roads were clear. This could have been a freaking commercial. The kids are chatting in the back seat, hubby and I are driving, trying to talk through where to grab food before getting on I-90 to get home. Everything is good after a few days of skiing. The mountain passes have been closed on and off for days, so we got on the road early, to have plenty of easy drive time. We were 2 miles shy of the freeway, when another guy ran a red light. We were doing 45, I think, nothing crazy, and the guy who ran the light was doing the same. As we crossed the intersection, other guy T-boned us in an oldsmobile alero, fully on the B pillar with my hubby and TODDLER son on that side. The car took it and only slid in an arc and came to rest. Didn't even crack the windshield. He hit us so hard he cracked our yakima box on the the roof of the car. Everyone in the family walked out of the car, very much shaken but only minor scrapes and bruises (and soft tissue, but whose counting). The other guys ENTIRE ENGINE was crushed.

I am 100% a subaru loyalist! I'm on trusty outback #3!

I had a similar story. I was in an accident with a Ford F250 in December 23 in my 2017 Crosstrek Premium. The truck ran the light at approximately 52 mph and accelerating. The police officer walked to me and asked where the driver of the Subaru was. I said it was me, and his next words were, "I thought we would be working a fatality!" I thought I had walked away with bruises, but 4 days later i collapsed when my spleen "exploded" from internal injuries. If your asking how this is a good story, believe me when I say, I truly believe if I had been in any other vehicle, I would not be here today. And, because of insurance and the situation surrounding the accident, it took me a year, but I finally got my replacement. A 2025 Subaru Crosstrek Sport. And I will never drive anything else!

That's just not true. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or in this case, the owners of these cars. And there are many different types of car shows, for every type. I myself have had one, as do these people, and for many, these cars saved their lives, and they love how they look. But you can't really argue their safety chops, it's a proven fact. You also really can't argue with their opinions on whether they or others think their beautiful cars, it's their opinions. You obviously just don't like Subaru, that's also fine, to each their own. My opinion, their cool looking little cars, they have the best all wheel drive system period, and if maintained properly, they can last a long time.

I previously owned a 2015 Nissan Versa, but secretly coveted the Sunshine orange Subaru Crosstrek, after my Nissan was paid off, I started my search. For three long years, I read reviews, from owners to car digest, I found my beauty at Blaise Alexander Subaru, formerly in Montoursville, PA, now in Muncy, PA. She had close to 30,000 miles, but was quite a looker. We took her home, put her in her place in our carport, and I began my life with my adorable Sunshine orange Subaru Crosstrek! Until less than 2 years afterwards, with a young, careless driver and poor direction from another driver, she pulled out from an intersection and totalled my baby, my very life. I have since moved on, bought another 2024 Subaru Crosstrek, but she was a part of me that I can't explain is still missing! I loved my Crosstrek, was perfectly safe, only slight bruising on my knee, but she is gone forever! My new Crosstrek is a 2024 Sun Blaze Pearl, a true beauty and definitely lives up to the Crosstrek name! Forever a Subaru Crosstrek Fan!

I had a 1998 Subaru Forester I bought used with 125,000 miles on it. I was the Subaru tech at the dealership. After owning it for 3 years had an incident and hit a black 2004 Grand Prix that stopped in the middle of the road at night with no lights on. The Grand Prix was totaled. My Forester needed some work but was easily fixed and I walked away uninjured. I drove that Subaru till it was just over 260,000 miles then sold it. My current Forester has 284,000 miles.
