The More Things Change For Subaru The More They Stay The Same

How easy will it be to get a 2024 Subaru Forester and 2024 Subaru Crosstrek? It may be more challenging at the end of the year. Some models will be more plentiful.

I cover the Subaru Corporation (Gunma, Japan) and the Subaru of Indiana Automotive factory production numbers monthly. It gives customers an idea of which models will be in shorter supply and harder to find. Some models will be more plentiful.

It's the same story for Subaru Corporation. The Forester and Crosstrek will remain the hardest to find new Subaru models. The more things change, the more they stay the same for the Japanese automaker.

If you opt for a Japanese-made Subaru, you will buy a 2024 Forester compact SUV, 2024 Crosstrek Base, and Premium subcompact SUV trim level, 2024 Impreza compact hatchback, WRX performance sports car, or BRZ two-door sport coupe. They could be more challenging to find this winter

If you want an American-made Subaru model, you'll opt for a 2024 Outback midsize SUV, 2024 Crosstrek Sport, Limited, or Wilderness subcompact SUV trim, 2024 Ascent 3-Row family SUV, or 2024 Legacy midsize sedan. These models will be more plentiful.

Where is the Solterra manufactured?

The new battery-electric Solterra compact SUV is manufactured by Toyota in Japan. The Solterra inventory is improving, but I don't have production numbers from Toyota.

Forester and some Crosstrek trim levels will be the most challenging to find this winter.

Here are the new production numbers for October 2023.

I have been covering Subaru's new model production all year, and it's been on an overall upward trend for seven months, but something changed in October.

Subaru Corporation reported its new vehicle production is up at its Gunma Japan factory. Subaru says new vehicle production decreased 4.0 percent in October, the first decrease in two months. Forester and Crosstrek will be affected and remain hard to find for U.S. customers.

Exports from Japan increased.

Subaru Corporation says exports from Japan increased slightly; 0.7 percent in October, the ninth consecutive monthly increase. Year-over-year Forester, Crosstrek, Impreza, WRX, and BRZ exports are up 17.7 percent.

Even with the slight increase in exports, the Forester, Crosstrek Base and Premium, Impreza hatchback, WRX, and BRZ will be in short supply.

Subaru Corporation reports production at the U.S. plant in Indiana increased 21.2 percent in October, its ninth consecutive month of increase. Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) production is up 20.1 percent this year.

The 2024 Outback midsize SUV, 2024 Crosstrek Sport, Limited and Wilderness subcompact SUV, 2024 Ascent 3-Row SUV, and 2024 Legacy midsize sedan should be easier to find for U.S. customers this winter.

My take.

Subaru Corporation should make another shift in the manufacturing of its models. They could make the U.S. specification Forester compact SUV at the Subaru of Indiana Automotive plant and move the Legacy sedan production to Japan. It would require retooling the SIA plant, making the Forester easier to get in North America. But that's easier said than done.
